There is a strong rumor that upgrades to the baseball facilities may begin soon.
I know, we have heard those rumors before. It is my understanding that the upgrades will be in 3 phases, with the locker room and player's lounge being in phase 1. I know this would be a welcome upgrade for both the players and the coaches.

Rumors are that the renovations will begin very soon, possibly being completed by February???

Phase 2 would include the outdoor batting cages and the bullpen areas.
Phase 3 would include some cosmetic upgrades to the entrances. The field was not mentioned, which I think does not need to be changed. I personally like the character of the field and think it should remain intact.
Anyone else heard "the rumor"???

my unerstanding is that phase one is under way as we speak--- and phase two and three will follow asap.

Heard the same thing that Phase 1 is underway as we speak and will be complete before the first game in the spring.

Is there any idea when phases 2 and 3 will start?

Will they immediately follow phase 1, or could they be starting phase 2 soon so as to have it ready by the time practice starts in the spring. Do you think they'll wait till next offseason to start phase 3, or depending on what all it consists of, do you think they could start it soon too and have it ready for opening day?

JMHO - I think Phase 1 (interior upgrades) will be extensive and will probably not be completed until the start of the season. Phase 2 includes batting cages and bullpen upgrades which could be included but because of $$$ I think the remainder will be assessed after Phase 1 has been completed. It would be nice to have the exterior / entrance upgrades completed before next football season to help enhance the visual aspects of the stadium but I'm not very optimistic. A National Championship (football), a Regional or Super Regional (baseball) could certainly help improve the timelines for 2011.

GREAT NEWS! I was told that construction will begin this week or next. All players were instructed to clean out their lockers for the holidays, due to the construction.

That is great news. We have do to something to help CMG recruit. A commitment towards facilities improvements is a big step in the right direction.

I spoke with several parents whose sons were at the Bama BB camp on Monday and Tuesday and they stated the construction / renovations were underway on the player's locker room and lounge. Although, they were not allowed in the construction area, it appears the Home dugout will be on the third base side this season. I just hope the renovations will be extensive enough for the players and coaches to feel comfortable showcasing the facilities to recruits.

Side note: One player (camp) stated they were hitting baseballs through the nets in the batting cages and several players commented how they thought it (Alabama) would be better than their high school cages. Obviously, not very impressive.
However, when I asked him how he liked the coaching staff, he said "Fantastic", great coaches and very disciplined.

OOPS, sorry for the confusion. I just spoke with the player's dad again tonight and was told the construction was for a player's lounge on the third base side and the locker room is staying where it is (expanding the locker room); therefore, it looks like the Home dugout will stay on the first base side. He said one of the coaches told him they were taking part of the storage facility and converting it to a very nice player's lounge with several flat screen televisions. Now if they would add a couple of xbox 360's, I bet that would help recruiting.
RTR!

One of the plans Coach Wells had when he returned from his short retirement was to renovate the third base line area and build new facilities for the home team over there. Maybe the lounge is part of that plan, and they will upgrade the locker room and move during phase 2 when bullpens and cages are redone.... Doesn't it sound a little strange to have the locker room on one side of the field and the lounge on the other?

I'm curious what everyone here thinks about the possibility of a new stadium with the recent purchase of the Bryce property. I know it was discussed late last year as a possibility and having Sewell-Thomas made into a parking structure. I think this would be the logical move for the University to make because the baseball stadium sits on prime parking for football and basketball. How do the current upgrades that are ongoing affect this possibility?

There is no doubt that you could build a beautiful facility on the Bryce property. Many of the trees on the property are 75 to 100 years old. You could have a new facility that had an old time feel to it. The location is somewhat isolated from the other major sport facilities, so parking would not be an issue, and spectators would not be able to stand outside and watch the game for free.

There has even been some talk in the past of making The Joe into a Womens Softball facility. They are outgrowing theirs quickly!

However there are issues. It will likely be 3-5 years before the new hospital is completed and the property vacant. There is quite a bit of demolition to be done to the old buildings, and a considerable amount of environmental clean up.

While all the details are worked out and a new Bryce is built, the University should have plenty of time to decide how they want to proceed.

Possible to move there in a few years. But I don't know about night games there...too many ghosts. Just imagine being at a late night extra innings game and looking up at the old hospital, which will stay, and think you see faces in the windows.
