In a dream world
I was trying to find the quote that I think Vince said. It was when they had won the superbowl and some asked him if they were the best team ever. He replied that he didnt know they hadnt played Bama yet.

First is this who said it?
Second is this an accurate quote?
Third Does someone have a link where it can be found?

My problem is I have an au buddy who is also a Gb fan and he has never heard that statement and says its not true. And I would so love to prove him wrong so any help would be greatly appreciated.

"I don't know, we haven't played Alabama yet." -- Vince Lombardi after being asked what it felt like to be the greatest football team in the world just after winning the '66 Super Bowl.

I don't have a link. I think it may be in Underwood's book, Bear.

Re: Vince Labardi quote?

I can't give you an exact source, but it was definitely after the 1966 season. I distinctly remember that I read it somewhere and it was a topic of conversation all over Mobile. I'd guess that I read it in either the Mobile paper, SI or the old SPORT magazine.

Not surprised that your goober friend tried to deny it, but I'd bet that he also knows it's true and just lying through his teeth, errrr, TOOTH.

I was a teenage eye-witness, along with millions of others. It was in the locker room after that first Super Bowl. The quote referred to by 37bamagrl is accurate. At the time it was almost as good as winning the AP title.

They did not call it the Super Bowl when Lombardi made that statement. It was called the NFL Championship.
Does anyone recall when the first Super Bowl was played?
I guess it was after the merger. I do not recall.

If it was after the '66 season, then it was called the Super Bowl. Super Bowl I was played in January '67. SB I determined the champion from the '66 season.

By the way, who is Vince Labardi??? Haha

Fixed it. His name is interesting. A lot of Italian names, particularly northern Italian names are Latinized versions of the Germanic names of the invading tribes - Goths, Vandals, etc. Modern German for "long" is "lang," (lahng) and "beard" is "Bart." The old, proto Germanic is really not far off these, so "Long Beard" would be "Langer Bart," or simply elided into "Langbard," once again close to Old Teutonic. Over years, and Latinized, it became "Lombardi."
