Derek Dooley probably grew up in the shadow of Erk Russell. He's old school like that so, yeah... attention getter. Erk used to head butt his guys all the time. Now, if the helmet was off and he slapped him, that's a different story. But it wasn't. Plus, without knowing what was being said at the time you have NO idea what was going on. It is very easy to take things out of context when you don't have the entire story.

I've had a coach smack me in the helmet before. It got my attention and achieved it's goal. If I hadn't had my helmet on at the time we would have had a problem. That's the line. For me it is, anyway.

My Dad would break clipboards over our helmets. Or do the whole smacking the top of the helmet with the whistle thing.

Last month I was watching a replay of he 90 Sugar Bowl vs Miami. Prince Wembley has a big catch and run and after he rose from the ground, he lifted his arms up in the air, when he came to sidelines, Bill Curry was grabbing his facemask and saying stuff to him.

Lol at the threadstarter. In the sport I trained in for 3 years, my instructor punched/kicked/elbowed/choked/armbarred/submitted/kneed me almost every training session. I was also a minor through part of it (17). I peed blood, bled, and bruised often. If a football coach can't slap a players helmet, than this world is just a bunch of pu...pansies.

Guarantee that hurt the coach's hand more that the player's head. His pride hurt worse as well. I bet he didn't miss his assignment on his next play, either!! Suck it up, that's football!

The ONLY times I wished we wore leather helmets was when coach would pop me on the headgear. The main trauma was to the ears, which would ring and ring after a good whack on that plastic.

Wait....I think I'm having a flashback!!:D

Most people that have ever played the game have had their face-mask slapped, jerked or grabbed by a coach. Then, after you did what was expected you had your butt patted. I never considered the first abuse or the patting a sexual advance.

Saying that is abuse is a very long stretch. I hate to say it but I believe UT may a very good hire.
