Way Too Early 2023 SEC Predictions

Probably, but that speaks to the lack of overall good coaches in the sport more than him being really good IMO.

How many current coaches have a ring right now? Just 4 or 5 I think and one of them is Mack Brown.

I think there are 11 active coaches who have made the playoffs. Only 5 active coaches who have won a semi final playoff game. 3 active coaches who have won the national title in the college football playoff era and 5 active who have won a title including before playoff

I don't disagree that he could win a title at LSU. Les Miles did.

But if he does it'll be because Bama steps back not because they pass a healthy Bama program. JMO.
Well, you have to realize that the playoff is going to 12 teams next year. That means no less than 3, 4 or even 5 teams from the SEC getting in. In that scenario anything is possible and not necessarily due to Bama stepping back. The final 4 is going to be a heck of a weekend of games unlike what we have seen lately.

It also means that if you beat us, there still a really good chance you're going to see us somewhere later in the season. lol

On the topic of Kelly, he is certainly a very good tactical and fundamental coach. If LSU continues to recruit at a high level (IMO his biggest question mark when they hired him), they'll be in the conversation every year. As relatively prolific of a career as Kelly's had, LSU is the first place he's coached where he'll routinely have access to truly elite talent. I think he had access to very good talent at Notre Dame, but probably not elite. From what I hear, he's been trying to land an SEC job for years. He was in the mix at least once at Tennessee, and I wouldn't doubt that he probably reached out to Georgia and Florida as well in recent years.

Different topic, but it's crazy to me that there are only five active FBS head coaches with rings. I think there are more guys with rings who've subsequently been fired in the BCS / Playoff era than there are guys still coaching with rings. The ones who have rings in that era and were later fired by their respective schools:

- Phil Fulmer
- Larry Coker
- Jim Tressel
- Gene Chizik
- Ed Orgeron
- Les Miles
- Mack Brown

Crazy stat. That's a lot of guys who either caught lightning in a bottle, or screwed up pretty badly after being good for awhile.

Les Miles…only coach in the modern era with a two loss national champion.
The way the 2024 sec schedules are he might get some company next year.

Might be the beer talking. I feel like LSU is going to disappoint this year. maybe another 9-4 season. Not terrible or anything but I am getting the vibe I got off of ole miss in 2009. Upsets the year before, lots of hype, but it just seems like the media is just handwaving anything that can possibly wrong with them.
Hope you're right.

My gut tells me if the shored-up secondary is good LSU is going to be a hand full. Last year wasn't a fluke, they obviously have a lot of good players and coaches.

I don’t think it was a fluke I just don’t think they are where the media is portraying them yet.

this isn’t a "not respecting them" thing or "whistling past the graveyard". For all the talk about how “Alabama was a couple of plays away from 8-4” everyone goes on and on about
LSU was a few plays away from 6-6. Got blown out in 3 out of the 4 losses. Struggled against state, auburn, and Arkansas. I don’t think it was a fluke I think they overachieved. That doesn’t mean you’re going to overachieve two years in a row and you’re ready to win a title. Brian Kelly even said himself he thinks they are a year away.

10-4 last year and then 9-4 (10-3 or 8-5 at worst) in Kelly's first two years would absolutely be a success for LSU as they are still rebuilding. When I say disappointment, I mean disappointment in terms of the media and fan expectations for them. Chris "qb and receiver are the only two positions on the field" Doering is putting them neck and neck with Georgia and ahead of Alabama. Yeah, they beat Alabama in a one game scenario at home. Doesn't necessairly mean they are ahead of them in terms of potential when it comes to success for the season. As far as putting them with Georgia, the game was over in the first quarter. Say what you want about Alabama's record in 2007. They lost to eventual national champion (Lsu) and top 5 Georgia team by a combine 10 points. They were competitive in every single game they played. I think Kelly is going to get them there but i don't think it's going to be in 2023

Unless you think we lose to Texas?

What I can say for certain is that this is going to be a fun season. I think the conference is as strong as it has ever been and great games in the regular season will be the result. Nick and Kirby have the best teams but Kelly and Freeze are strong coaching additions to the league. I think Jimbo will have a competitive team and Lane is always a threat. Hopefully Beamer in the east will continue to improve off of last years effort and Josh is poised to make another splash while Stoops remains steady. Pittman remains a surprise success but we will see if he can still keep it up after crucial coordinator changes. Yea, this is going to be a fun season to be a fan of an SEC team.

I think we'll beat LSU and end up in Atlanta, but I think we suffer upset loss to either Texas or Texas AM and I'm going with history and predicting an upset loss at Auburn.

The more I have thought about it the more I think auburn has issues on o-line. If even one guy is a bust on that o-line it changers everything. I am not knocking anyone but we’re talking about guys that depth chart issues at places like Tulsa. o-line isn’t like wr and cb you can’t afford guys not producing at the position.

Texas will be the most talented offense we face all regular season, an immediate test for the defense, if we can fend them off, I feel good against the rest of the teams on the schedule, even Tennessee.

The thing I’m looking for is how we look on the road in hostile environments, has been a sweat the last couple of years.

That game will be trick plays galore, but I think Bama beats AU..............

It will be a fight like it always is
In JHS. I just think having multiple o-line from the portal is so risky. You have a bust at receiver. Ok you can cover that up. You have a bust at running back. It can be covered that up. You have an any bust at o-line. Any o_lineman . You are kind of screwed. If any of those transfer players Don’t work out on the o-line it changes things. To me the odds that every single transfer o-lineman and their transfer qb are going to produce at a sec level is kind of far fetched.
