I was under the impression it was just a completely made up word that they now claim is a word for a turkey.

^Pretty much^. It's a made up word coined by a student in the late 1800's to make the following catchy sounding cheer:

Hoki, Hoki, Hoki, Hy.
Techs, Techs, V.P.I.
Sola-Rex, Sola-Rah.
Polytechs - Vir-gin-ia.
Rae, Ri, V.P.I.

The 'e' was added later.

A simple google search will give you a complete definition, or you could click What is a Hokie? | Virginia Tech

If it was a completely made up word for a turkey, I find it highly coincidental that it seemed to be an actual word for a turkey. Also, if they were the fighting gobblers, why would you change that to a completely made up word? I really have no clue as to why they changed it from fighting gobblers to castrated turkeys, but it is what it is. Funny thing is, most people don't know that a hokie is a castrated turkey. To them, a hokie is "a big Virginia Tech fan". It's sad.

From Gobbler to HokieBird

The origin of the term "Gobblers" is disputed, with one story claiming it was coined in the early 1900s as a description of how student athletes would "gobble" up their more than ample servings of food. Another story attributes it to the fact that the 1909 football coach, Branch Bocock, wanted to stimulate better spirit amongst his players and initiated them into an impromptu and informal "Gobbler Club."

In 1982, the appearance of the Gobbler mascot costume was changed to one that looked like a maroon cardinal with a snood, and references first appeared to it as "the Hokie mascot," "the Hokie," and "the Hokie bird."

As wierd as it sounds, we too acquired our "rich" history via some accounts of events that led to our mascot/Crimson Tide, etc..........right??? lol:BigA:

Maybe the turkey was castrated during a fight? It must have been a fierce fight but it does sound as if the turkey lost the fight if it was castrated (?).
Could be a good senario for the BAMA - VT game........... fierce fight but THEY LOSE!!

ROLL TIDE!!

Main Entry: hokie
Part of Speech: n
Definition: the first victim on the Tide's meat pole for the 2009 college football season.

OK, OK......I have to admit that I'm very nervous about this game, but I sure hope the definition is correct!!

I asked this same question to a group of VT fans at Steak-n-Shake in Hermitage, TN on the day of the Music City Bowl. They said "A Hokie is a castrated, fighting turkey." Hokies were used in the same manner as fighting roosters, if I am understanding the meaning correctly.

i cant specifically tell you what one single hokie is.. but this is what hokies are...[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLESDMDpyfw]YouTube - Virginia Tech Hokies Trailer #2 2009 - Alabama[/ame]
