Frankly after beating UT a SWISHER SWEET will taste good to me!

In reality the Macanudo is a good smoke! However, don't take my word for it as I probably smoke 1 or 2 cigars a year!

here's the thing that gets me

I enjoy an occassional cigar (good cigar), but when I go to smoke one that I previously enjoyed, oftentimes there's no repeat of the enjoyment. Has that ever happened to y'all? I don't know squat about cigar making, but could it be that the leaves used to make the cigar came from different fields, or different times? I'd love to be able to expect the same thing from any particular brand, but it just hasn't been the case for me. I'll have a very enjoyable smoke, then three weeks later will go to enjoy the same cigar, but can only smoke about 1/2 inch of it.

My two cents:
* for the money, Flor de Oliva
* fairly consistent, Romeo y Julietta
* usually most enjoyable, Montecristo

I've never had a "real" Cuban cigar - can anyone drop me a line about how/where to come by one? I'll pay....

Either Chops or Bones in Atlanta used to have pre-ban Cubans for sale. The ban is only on the importation, so cigars brought to the U.S. are legal. There wasn't a requirement that they be destroyed and cigars can survive a long time if properly cared for. My statement about Chops or Bones is based on the situation over five years ago when I still lived in Atlanta. Of course there was quite a premium for those cigars. I have also had one brought into the country by a friend, they are perfectly legal in most other countries, just not the U.S. Of course bringing them in is smuggling and illegal.

I read that the whole "Cuban" thing is over-blown that a cigar from Honduras is just as good as, if not better than, a current Cuban cigar. The rationale for this is that most of the good cigar manufacturers fled Cuba when Castro took over and re-located to Honduras. Take that for what it's worth.

Cigars were traditionally enjoyed with a good brandy. Extrememy popular in the antebellum south.
I have found that a decent red wine or a good robust beer (not bud or miller, nor any of the skunky beers) Petes Wicked Oktober Fest is excellent with a nice stogie.

Try a snifter of Grand Marnier, neat, with your next cigar. They compliment one another in a way that you would not believe...

A double thumbs up to Grand Marnier. I also particularly like a snifter of good Port or Sherry with my cigar.

With regards to the quality of the Cuban cigars. It is my understanding that many of the good cigar makers (especially the rollers, which is key) did flee Cuba long ago. Castro made the plantations state run, which usually spells doom for any industry. However, I have also read that there is NO finer soil and climate for growing tabaco than in Cuba. I believe you can get cigars from the neighboring countries that are as good as the majority of the cuban cigars. However, I believe that most cigar lovers would agree that the very best cigars still come from cuba. I haven't enjoyed a good cigar in a while. I'll have to pick one up for the game, just in case.

I've never gotten beyond a Macanudo. Which reminds me...I'm out, & this could be a big cigar-smoking occasion...

I'd also recommend a large quantity of food during the game before enjoying the cigar.

That's the one I have marked in my humidor for this game! Oh yeah, and a few glasses of Maker's Mark as well.

Ahh! My people!!!

Yeah, I have to mark that one for a special occasion since they are quite pricey. No occasion better than this one. I'm not sure about Maker's Mark though. Last time I had that I ran nake....nevermind...;)

My brothers and I make the UT game every year. Living in Columbia, SC we chose this game a long time ago as our annual Bama trip. We have always been superstitious about buying the cigars ahead of time, so we wait until after the game and buy them on the cheap. Even a cruddy Swisher Sweet taste nice after a Bama victory.

Check out the food forum. I'm cooking a whole hog for Friday stuffed with chickens that are stuffed with different dressings for a party Friday night. Saturday leftovers should be great.

Came home and checked the humidor. I keep the bands of the ones that I like. I had never heard of this one, but I got it for fathers day and it has been ageing there since then.
I smoked it Sunday and was very impressed with it.
Gispert, had a lovely tan color and was as smooth as the honey brown thighs of a spanish maiden. Checked prices and it was less expensive than the Macanudos.
