The criteria has always been "4 best teams." Conference titles are only part of the measuring stick and that is why Ohio State made it in a year ago. If the resumes are close, then a conference title can be the tie breaker. But it is not a requirement, no matter how much these pin heads wish it were, just a year removed from the same pin heads saying it should not be.
Alabama and Ohio State do not have similar resumes. Alabama's is a a great deal better, and that is why a conference title should not help Ohio State. Some of Ohio State's wins are impressive. Most of them are just beating lousy competition. And then there are the 2 losses, which unfortunately trump the one impressive win they have. Those two losses are bad. One is very bad (Iowa) and the other is still not forgivable. Losing at home to Oklahoma isn't a sin. However, getting boat raced at home by Oklahoma is. So Ohio State made the B1G championship and could win the game. Congrats! Florida played for the SEC title each of the past two years and was not considered for the playoff either time. Missouri did in 2014 and was not considered. Fantastic for the Buckeyes! But they are not a playoff team simply by winning that game.
All of this is reasonable and logical, and I know the committee is not beholden to a bit of it. Which is why I'm beginning to lean towards hoping Wisconsin beats the snot out of them. I'm sure Joey Galloway will have something intelligent to say after that.
