Which former Bama player do you wish had gone into coaching?

The pipeline of former Bama players in coaching is virtually empty and the day of home grown coaches seems behind us for now.

I got to thinking about which of the former players over the last twenty years I wish had gone into coaching in the hope that someday when Mama called, she'd be calling someone who on and off the field best personified Alabama football. For me, one guy stood out from all the rest--Jay Barker.

Who do you wish had gone into coaching?

Maybe you mean 'college coaching'.... because there are many x-Bama players coaching High School.

Not over the last 20 years, but I'd go with John Hannah. He was one mean SOB on the field, but polished and professional off the field. I think he would have been a fine coach.

Within the last 20, I'd have to agree with the Barker choice.

I know Shaun Alexander is on a all-pro level in the NFL, but he would do great in coaching. He's a true leader, and is very smart. I think he could do wonders at the college level.

But like others have said, the pipeline has virtually dried up. I think that's the case with many major programs. BCS caliber programs do not produce the coaches any more. With 85 scholarshipped players, and a roster no larger than 115, the odds are reduced. The big programs have become virtually NFL training grounds more than ever before. Smaller schools have a large number of coaches at major programs. Obviously, I'm stating this as the norm, but its becoming more frequent.

He got a better life's calling helping children and establishing the Boys Ranch near Southside, AL, but John Coyle is quality, with leadership that could have done a fine job in coaching I think.

Bobby Humphrey, Shannon Brown, Joey Jones or Freddie Kitchens are a couple of names off the top of my head who would have made good coaches I think. To bad they decided to do something different.

Joey Jones is the coach at Birmingham Southern. He could have gone to bigger and better things though. He built up a pretty good program at Mountain Brook and probably could have gotten a D-IA assistant coaching job at a good school instead of trying to build up the Birmingham Southern D-III from nothing.

RTR forever!

I always thought John Hannah would be a good coach too. He is a hard nose and can get in a player's face.

RTR forever!

Pat Trammell would have been a great coach, extremely smart and he exuded leadership from every pore. Had he lived and chose to coach, there would be a statue of him outside the stadium. :BigA:

Thanks for pointing it out. BTW Shannon Brown coaches at Bob Jones H.S. in Huntsville and is doing a good job. Joey coached at Moutain Brook in BHam before going to Birmingham Southern. Obviously I knew they were coaches otherwise it would be a pretty big coincidence that all four I named would fit that criteria. :biggrin2: Guess my humour missed the mark!
