I read this and it got me thinking? Is it really Vinnie or would Jalston Fowler be the biggest surprise? What do you guys think? Could it be someone else I missed?

In terms of players kind of coming out of nowhere and making an impact, I would agree that Sunseri is the choice. Fowler has been good but he hasn't had the opportunity in meaningful time. He's a bruising back and is faster than I thought he would be, but for the most part his time has come in the 4th quarter when the defenses are worn down. It will be interesting to see how he fits into the regular RB rotation next season.

Also, McCarron has been a surprise to me in how well he has protected the ball this year. Going in to the season I thought interceptions would be the one achilles heel of this team no matter who the QB was. Ironically, it was an interception by a non QB that probably cost us our only loss of the season.

Re: Biggest Surprise Hero this year?

AJ, he really exceeded my expectations this year.

Brad Smelley..... Totally replaced Dial quite admirably
I don't think I have ever seen as much improvement over a tear as Brad had. He stepped up at the times when it seemed nothing was working to get a first down. He got his first TD as a senior. He is a key blocker in our run game.

I know the others are really good players but you had to notice Brad really step it up. There may be one but I can not recall a dropped ball. Brad is an example of what Alabama football is all about. Like coach Bryant would say "reach down give jut that little extra, wanting it just a little more than the other guy".

Vinnie really made a name for himself. He understands the process and has gone beyond what anyone expected.

Re: Biggest Surprise Hero this year?

Its really hard to narrow it down to just one player. I think that Smelly and Sunseri were both surprises and have played well. One surprise has been the improvement of Jerrell Harris. I agree, he hasnt lived up to the hype but he has been a solid to good player for us this year. His pass coverage skills and his ability to read plays have improved dramatically. He's played smart football this year which couldn't have been said the past three years.

Re: Biggest Surprise Hero this year?

Cody Mandell....no more 50 yard field goals with average kickers. This time LSU starts several drives inside the 10, leading to a game changing turnover or blocked punt.

Nevermind, thought we were talking about the BCS game. I agree with the rest of the Vinnie crowd.

Brad on offense and Vinnie on defense.

i agree. i think fowler is good.....but keep in mind he is getting in the game when the other team is whipped and he is running down hill with fresh legs. I think he is great.....but we will never really know for sure until he starts.

I read the title and thought automatically Vinnie but I'm going to give him the D or Special Teams. Offensive I'm going AJ. I really thought the QB race was going to be tougher at the start of the season but AJ ran away with it.

Nothing against Brad's play but I'll give him the most improved.
