Hey NatchezTider,
How was your summer? Have you been getting your players in shape during the off-season?
Are the young arms maturing any?
Reading your post brings back fond memories. The first professional ballgame of any kind that I experienced as a youngster was the St. Louis Cardinals vs. Chicago Cubs. Bob Gibson against Fergie Jenkins, and believe me I saw two guys pitch a hell of a game. Neither ace deserved to lose, and I was really glad that it was not Gibby.
Jenkins walked the lead-off man, Lou Brock, who scored from first on a hit-and-run single by Roger Maris down the rightfield line. That was the only run scored. After that there was nothing but smoke thrown by both pitchers. I have never seen a more intimidating figure on the mound than Gibson. I truly believe he would have thrown at his own mother if it meant getting her off the plate.
Talking about greatness on the field that day--do any of these names bring back memories? Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Ron Santo, Don Kessinger, Glen Beckert, Joe Pepitone, Hundley, and Spangler. Leo the Lip Durocher was the Cub's manager. And for the Redbirds--Mike Shannon, Julian Javiar, Dal Maxville, Orlando Cepeda, Tim McCarver, and as I mentioned before Brock and Maris. We know who the Card's manager was--Red himself.
On another occasion I got the opportunity to meet Steve Carlton.
But I must confess that my favorite player growing up was Mr. Charlie Hustle, Pete Rose. I even wore his number 14 throughout my ball career.
I often wish my own son could have had an opportunity to live one summer during those wonderful, pure times of MLB when men played the game for the love of it, and fans did not have to memorize a new roster each year. Many times during my constant disillusionment of today's game, I have threaten to abandon MLB and only follow minor league ball, but even it is becoming tainted by big business.
Why don't we plan a road trip with our boys next summer and take them to Busch Stadium or even go to Memphis and catch the minor league Redbirds? I would even be willing to head to Houston when the Cardinals visited the Astros.
BTW, did you see Bud Smith hurl the no-hitter last week?
Later,
bf
