Who will be in the World Series?

Seattle and Atlanta

Growing up a Cardinal fan (spent many summer nights listening to the Redbirds on AM Radio) until the Braves moved to Atlanta (adopted them as my second team only because I felt it was my duty as a Southerner), it is hard to admit that I think neither the Cards or Braves will see the World Series this year. I have been very disenchanted with Bobby Cox's use of starting pitchers when they are on top of their game. It is almost as if this man no longer believes in a pitcher throwing a complete game. This mindset will come back to haunt him in the post-season. The Cards have the sticks to get them there, but inconsistent pitching will rear its ugly head.

In the end, Oakland upsets the Yankees' bid for another championship.

The Athletics, on the arms of Mulder, Hudson, and Zito, go on to duel it out with Oswalt and Houston's other young guns in the 2001 World Series.

This could pan out to be the most exciting post-season in a long time.

Gosh! I love this game!

bearfacts: how's it going?

I also grew up a Cardinals fan. Dad and I would lie in bed listening to Harry and Jack on KMOX. Boy, those were the days.....Boyer, Javier, Bill White, Groat, Flood, Musial, Gibson, etc. The only games on TV were with Dizzy and Pee Wee on Saturday. Life was much simpler then!!

Hey NatchezTider,

How was your summer? Have you been getting your players in shape during the off-season?
Are the young arms maturing any?

Reading your post brings back fond memories. The first professional ballgame of any kind that I experienced as a youngster was the St. Louis Cardinals vs. Chicago Cubs. Bob Gibson against Fergie Jenkins, and believe me I saw two guys pitch a hell of a game. Neither ace deserved to lose, and I was really glad that it was not Gibby.

Jenkins walked the lead-off man, Lou Brock, who scored from first on a hit-and-run single by Roger Maris down the rightfield line. That was the only run scored. After that there was nothing but smoke thrown by both pitchers. I have never seen a more intimidating figure on the mound than Gibson. I truly believe he would have thrown at his own mother if it meant getting her off the plate.

Talking about greatness on the field that day--do any of these names bring back memories? Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Ron Santo, Don Kessinger, Glen Beckert, Joe Pepitone, Hundley, and Spangler. Leo the Lip Durocher was the Cub's manager. And for the Redbirds--Mike Shannon, Julian Javiar, Dal Maxville, Orlando Cepeda, Tim McCarver, and as I mentioned before Brock and Maris. We know who the Card's manager was--Red himself.

On another occasion I got the opportunity to meet Steve Carlton.

But I must confess that my favorite player growing up was Mr. Charlie Hustle, Pete Rose. I even wore his number 14 throughout my ball career.

I often wish my own son could have had an opportunity to live one summer during those wonderful, pure times of MLB when men played the game for the love of it, and fans did not have to memorize a new roster each year. Many times during my constant disillusionment of today's game, I have threaten to abandon MLB and only follow minor league ball, but even it is becoming tainted by big business.

Why don't we plan a road trip with our boys next summer and take them to Busch Stadium or even go to Memphis and catch the minor league Redbirds? I would even be willing to head to Houston when the Cardinals visited the Astros.

BTW, did you see Bud Smith hurl the no-hitter last week?

Later,

bf

I got to see some of that no-hitter and it was awsome. I thought it was pretty cool with big Mac sitting there on the bench talking with the kid. After he threw it Mac was as excited as anyone. Hes gonna be a good kid. I think they said that about that other boy you guys got who keeps getting sent to the minors. I like the world series cards. Ozzie Smith, man.

I think Seattle vs D-backs.
Roll Tide

Oh ya, Seattle in 7

Does anybody want to change their predictions before the post season starts?

I did pick Oakland and Houston in the Fall Classic, but the Cardinals have been on a roll the last month. Talk about starting pitching getting the job done; the Redbirds have gotten it.

I still believe Oakland is the best in baseball, though.

I lean toward the Yanks in the A.L., but wouldn't be surprised if Seattle doesn't beat 'em out.
In the N.L., I feel there is no doubt the Braves will be there.
I can't see them losing to anyone but the Mets or Philly and neither of them will be there!

The Champs - I say if Seattle gets there it will be the Braves that win.
If the Yanks get there they will win simply because they own the Braves!

BamaDevo,

You're talking with your heart about the Braves. I am really concerned about Maddux. I think he is hurting more than the club is letting on (he's dropped 4 in a row). Phillies are breathing down their backs. Should make for an interesting last week.

Is there anyone who would like to change their predictions before we get any further into the playoffs?

I want commitments and predictions now. No jumping on the band wagon in about week.

It is hard to be humble when you're from ALABAMA.

O.K. Bear facts. I want to hear an apology for telling me I was thinking with my heart.
The Braves held off Philly and took game one in dramatic fashion from Houston.

Now for my prediction.....
It has alot of twists to it, but if you read it will make sense.

First in the N.L.
Braves vs. Houston - I feel the Braves take this one in 4 games.
St. Louis vs Arizona - I lean toward Arizona winning this one simply due to the fact of Schilling & Johnson.

In the A.L.
New York vs Oakland - New York should take this, but I can never count Oakland out.
Cleveland vs Seattle - Don't let one game fool you, Seattle wins this in 4 games.

Next Round....
N.L.
Braves vs. (St. Louis or Arizona) - the reason I put it this way is because if St. Louis wins they will beat the Braves, if Arizona beats St. Louis they will lose to the Braves.

A.L.
Seattle vs. (Oakland or New York) - Again there is a stipulation to this one. Seattle will beat Oakland but not New York.

My pick for the World Series:
Braves vs. New York
With the Braves winning due to the fact that this team should pull out all the stops for one last hurrah!

O.K. everyone......Flame Away!

Let me go on line as saying I really hope I am wrong about Oakland and New York.
I want Oakland to beat them because I would like to see someone new in the World Series.

Oh, and the reason I picked the teams I did is because they both have been there.

I still say the D'Backs and the A's in the Series. In the AL... I think the A's pitching will carry them past the Yanks in a 5 game series. I think the Mariners will come back and win the series against the Indians, but will have to fight hard to do it. Then I think the A's beat the Mariners to advance. In the NL... I think the D'Backs hold on to beat the Cards, while the Braves topple the Astros (at least I hope). I'd MUCH rather my D'backs face the Braves than the Astros. The D'Backs have destroyed Maddux both times they have faced him this season, and the Braves haven't hit against Arizona very well at all. As for the World Series... the A's swept the D'Backs during the season, on the other hand the D'Backs are loaded with veterans who have been there before. Both staffs have great pitching and closers, so it would be a VERY low scoring series. I think it will come down to walks, SB's, and errors.

Major League Totals
SB's:
AZ- 71
Oak- 68
Advantage- EVEN

Walks:
AZ- 1052
Oak- 1021
Advantage- Slight edge to Arizona

Fielding %:
Az- Ranked 1st in the Major Leagues
Oak- Ranked 24th in the Major Leagues
Advantage- Arizona

-Also, Arizona will have a huge bat in at DH, Erubel Durazo, a big-time HR threat.

Arizona wins the World Series in 6 games! I hope so anyway...

By the way, now the Bravos are up 2-0 over the Astros!
Now do you guys believe me?
The Braves stand a good chance of getting into the World Series again!

BamaDevo and other Braves Faithful,

Atlanta finally decides to wake up and continue to get big games and big plays from unsung heroes like Giles and Bako.

Astros' bats have been stymied, which really surprises me. I really thought the Brave s' pitching would not hold up in the divisional playoffs. So I was wrong with that match up, barring a miracle from the Astros.

But the A's have not let me down and the Cardinals have even things up and look to have the edge going into tonight's game.

Yankee fans, things look pretty bleak right now.

As much as i would love to see Seattle in the World Series, I believe that the Yankees will once again beat them and represent the American League in the W.S. For the National League, I think that the Johnson/Schilling combination will be too much for the Braves to handle this year. Arizona and New York are my World Series predictions with Arizona winning the World Series 4 games to 2 over the Yankees.
