Why are cops allowed to speed?

I understand if they are speeding in an emergency situation. What irritates me is when they speed up and down the interstate with no lights on and tailgate and generally show aggressive driving tendencies. On top of that they are never ticketed even if they are pulled over in their private vehicles.

Can anyone give me a coherent legitimate reason why this is the case?

Because civilians don't have ticket pads.

Actually, several years ago, a friend of mine was driving in T-town and was behind a cop. She just matched speeds with the cop, figuring he was going the limit. The cop speed up to well past the limit, and she did as well, at which point the cop pulled her over and ticketed her for speeding.

She went to traffic court, and when the judge heard the story, he did not dismiss her ticket, but he did issue a speeding ticket to the cop.

i particularly like it when the hit the lights just to go through the red light.

another thing that ticks me off and i see it on the interstates in GA (particulary i-20 west towards bama) is when troopers drive 5 mph below the speed limit and no one will pass them causing unnecessary congestion

Going home from work early one morning (4 AM or so) a few years ago, I was passed by two cops with lights on and sirens blaring. They must have been doing 80 mph or more. No traffic on the road.

When I got to the intersection a mile or so ahead, I saw them along with about 10 other police officers at the popular restaurant that sits there. Well, sat there. It burned down a couple of years ago. (Any of you familiar with Rainbow Crossing in the Blountsville, Alabama area?)

They must have been really hungry.

Most have "blue line" stickers or tags on the back glass of their personal cars. Black with a horizontal blue stripe means police related. My girl's son keeps one on all of my vehicles. As a musician, they've been very helpful late-night.

Well, who is going to pull them over? The good-ole-boy network is pretty strong among police from what I understand. (please correct me if I'm wrong)

Yep. Will another cop pull over the speeding cop? I doubt it. That is why they have those little Blue and Black bar stickers on their offduty cars. They won't even get pulled over for speeding when they are off duty.

I pass cops so long as I don't have to go more than 5 mph over the speed limit to do so. I have done that a bunch of times and never been pulled over. There is definitely no reason to worry about passing a cop when he is going under the speed limit.

Unless maybe you've got something in your car you wouldn't want him to find. Or you're drunk. Or wanted for murder. Or something like that. ;)

It seems every other car in the Atlanta metro has one. I don't think the cops are that easily fooled.

You speak the truth sir!!! They are all stoned as bats and in the left lane on the cell phone doing 20 mph less than the flow of traffic!!!

Police officers, whether on duty or not, are almost never ticketed - nor are any friends who get a PBA card from said officers. It is an example of corruption that comes with power...

My experience with Atlanta drivers: When driving towards ATL, I always knew that I was entering the Atlanta metro area when the flow of traffic hit 90 MPH, and if I did the speed limit, I'd be rear-ended.

Many years ago, I was driving late at night up near Sandy Springs on I-285, and two cars passed me in the left and right lanes....as they passed, the criss-crossed in front of me....about 10-15 feet in front of me. Both vehicles were doing 90+ MPH.

10-4. as a kid, I liked going to the 4 way stop because of the milled warning strips in the road. I used to think that was the coolest thing when you were pulling up to the stop and the car would make that noise at it rolled over the grooves in the road.

Geez...the things we used to think were cool. lol.

I used to ride I-20 westbound through Birmingham past the airport every day for elementary school. Right before you get to the airport exit there is a tight curve where I-20 converges with I-59, and there was a speed warning sign and a set of those strips. I can still remember the timing and pitch of the sounds they made. They haven't been repaired or replaced recently, and are pretty much worn down/gone now.
