Will Penn State's Tone Be Different Than Ours Last Year?

Last year I remember the tone and attitude being more of a respectful one in Tuscaloosa. It was respect for Joe Pa...it was respect for the Penn State players...and it was respect for their fans. I had a few Penn State fans wander over to my tailgate last year and I fed them and made sure they had plenty to drink. They were blown away with the southern hospitality and couldn't believe how loved and respected they were. I guess in the Big Ten no one really cares about each other.

Anyway...I wonder if the Penn State nation will feel the same way this weekend. Will they see this as a "return the favor" trip to make sure the best of college football's past and present are upheld? Or...will they have some thirst for revenge from last year's whooping? We all love each other...and we respect the heck out of each other's school...but when it all comes down to it you want your team to win the game. I have faith that the Penn State nation will be nothing but classy, but I can't help but think they are bitter about last year's game...a feeling neither team had going into the game a year ago.

Mostly respectful, but you will get some ill-behaved people, particularly those that have been drinking.

Hard to say, I think the older generation will try to ensure that it will be.
I saw a reference to this on one of the PSU boards a few days ago when an older PSU fan called some of the younger PSU fans on the board for some of the comments they were making about Bama & Saban, etc, asking for them to keep in mind the respect Bama fans had shown PSU and especially to JoePa.

In reading their boards, it seems a 60/40 split of those two attitudes, with most PSU fans being gracious...of course it doesn't help when a supposed smart alek Bama fan shows up on one of their boards flaming and gets their ire up, so I take what I read on their boards with a grain of salt same as I do with any rivalry game of this nature.

There's a fan that calls Finebaum lately from PA and he's a pretty classless guy. Hope some of our folks have a run-in with him, as he thinks he'll beat up any Bama fan he comes in contact with. Maybe someone who is making the trip can show him some respect. Not physically, necessarily, but he does need a lesson in respect. Other than that guy and an idiot here and there, I think it would be about the same as it was in T-Town a year ago.

Having spent some time in Pa, I don't know if my perception of the genpop can apply to PSU students/fans in general, but they were not the friendliest people I ever met. I would be pleasantly suprised if there are few (or no) reports of rude/obnoxious/even violent behavior - maybe the experience had by the ones who came to BDS last year will be returned in kind. We'll see.

I spent over a year working in that area of PA, and I wouldn't be surprised if we hear of some nastiness from their fans up there. I don't think it's the majority of their fans, but there is good sized segment that believes they should disrespect/yell at/harrass/throw beer on every fan of the opposing team they encounter. maybe it will be different because of the tradition between the two schools and their efforts to return the hospitality we showed them though...

Not to mention that the generation that grew up in the 70s and 80s that saw us play Penn State regularly are now grown...and the current "young" generation knows nothing about that rivalry we had back then.

So there are only a handful of college students right now who were even alive the last time we played Penn State (not counting last year). That is why I wonder if their fanbase will see this game tomorrow as more of a "we respect you but we want revenge from last year" as opposed to "we hope to see two fine, traditional programs fight it out", which I feel was the way we saw last year's game.

Maybe I just see it that way because we won the game.

Should be nice until we get up on them 63-3 then they may not feel so welcoming. Just kidding, PSU is classy & Saban will Never run up the score. He will put in the cheerleaders, trainer & ball handlers first, I don't think anyone has anything to worry about, few Schools are like the 2 Orange ones in the SEC to their Guests.

I don't know why they should be bitter, CNS could have run the score up a lot worse than what it was. The thing we have to remember, and this is nothing personal against the people from the Great State of Pa, but the Northern States just have a different way of mingling than the people from the Southern States do. It's the culture more than a personal attitude. NOw, some people you just can't please no matter what you do. I do expect though, that our people will be treated with more respect than say, tOSU, UM, or UW fans. IMO:BigA:

Penn State fans have treated me great up there, granted it has been 20+ years, but I don't expect any different this time. We are used to the wahoos we encounter at other SEC stadiums we visit. I have never had a bad experience up there, and I have always had bad experiences at Tennessee. It could change this year, and I know there are always some homers who act stupid, but I am convinced that the majority of PS fans are a cut above what we have to deal with here in the SEC.

For instance, when was the last time you saw the opposing fans applaud our team buses as they left the stadium after the game? I have seen it twice up there ( once after a win and once after a loss).

I suspect it will be a pleasant trip for the Bama fans.... Sure there will be a few ill behaved fans as there is with any school. However they have been running commercials and internet stuff all week about respecting the tradition between these two great schools.

The Moto has been:
RESPECT the Rivalry
RESPECT the Tradition
RESPECT the Tide
RESPECT The Penn State Way

Can't say about The Game tomorrow but walking around town, taking pictures @ the lion shrine & The Joe Pa Statue in front of Beaver Stadium EVERY, again I say EVERY Penn State person has been extremely polite, courteous & Helpful. Most have asked about our experience in Pennsylvania this visit and to ask about the tornado damage and offer their prayers. Tomorrow might be different but I doubt it.

There is gonna be some tension. Penn State will never have a coach like Joe Pa, and he's given them so many great years. But they're getting less and less competitive and for fans that passionate it's got to be frustrating. I'm mean Joe Pa is Penn State, it's not like Bama, we're always expecting and waiting for a return of the glory days, we've had five coaches win NC's. I think Penn State fans may be feeling that their glory days are over, and watching their team get beat as badly as Bama will beat them today is gonna be very painful and a stinging reminder that they may never be what they once were. The fans will be kind, but they won't enjoy it.

We have received nothing but respect from the PSU people. Up and down College Ave last night everyone was warm and friendly. Several came up to us to welcome us and thank us for our hospitality last year. On our drive over from Pittsburgh we stopped at a Sheetz convenience store. The owner saw our Bama gear and said he had such a great time in Tyscaloosa last year he wanted to welcome us. He gave us a handful of coupons for free stuff.
