It was interesting to see how the first top teams from the 1930-1950s, like Minnesota, Pitt, Michigan State, Michigan, Army and Tennessee suddenly drop to the bottom of the list.

I love pausing it at 2007 and then pressing play. Bama just climbs like a chimp in a tree. We were stepping/climbing on folks until we reached the top...AND THEN....the Bama line just keeps moving to the right like a runaway train...LOVE IT! RTR(y):)

Two interesting points:

Saban at Bama alone would be enough for first place on the list.

Saban at LSU was never ranked #1 in the AP poll.

We went from 31 to 138 under Saban. Unbelievable.
The reason that Alabama had 6 NC seasons but only 31 appearances as number 1 pre-Saban was that in 3 of the 6, Bama did not appear even once as number 1. In fact, even in the other 3 Bama did not dominate the number 1 slot. And the non-NC years Bama rarely appeared as number 1 even though they were frequently number 2-5.

There have been 5 seasons where Bama has finished #1 with no other weeks at #1. That is 25% of the total number of 20 seasons out of 86 where this happened.

It really demonstrates an enormous bias against Alabama. It's how the 1992 season went as well. They had to beat Miami before most people would even consider the possibility that Alabama was better. Now, I'm not saying it was unfair Miami was ranked ahead, but it seems like it always went that way, kind of like how until Saban Alabama has zero Heisman winners despite some amazing football players.

The reason that Alabama had 6 NC seasons but only 31 appearances as number 1 pre-Saban was that in 3 of the 6, Bama did not appear even once as number 1.
And 19 of those 31 appearances were in 1978-79-80.

We were #1 for 15 of 18 polls across 79-80 - nearly half our total.

A few points of note:

1) I've documented the northern bias of most pre-1970s polls, which is why it's so funny to hear nowadays "but they're biased towards the SEC." Yes, that's true - but it's largely correct, too.

2) you also have to remember there used to be FAR FEWER POLLS in a season (even by the AP) than there are now. In 1964, the preseason poll was dated 9/14, but the first actual poll to take results into account was on 9/28. And there were, of course, no post-bowl polls save for 1965 until 1968. There were 11 total polls by the AP in 1964; there were 16 last year.

In other words, it's EASIER now to run up huge numbers of weeks in a row on top as long as you win than it used to be.

3) Since ties no longer occur, it's easier to know what will happen.

The poll years had built in biases (more sports writers in the mid-west and east) and I am happy we now have the chance to win the title on the field.

I still remember 1966 and 1977!
