JessN: With Mack Brown retiring, coaching sweepstakes will accelerate

A major problem has been bama fans getting news from Texas message boards. Texas to PAC 12 y'all! At this point most legit media is pointing to staying at bama. Those conspiracies have been brewing all year. Let's hope they are like most message board fodder.

I hope so. I just don't want to be Tebow'd. What ...... me off is the delay in signing the contract. What I read on the other site makes his delayed signature make sense. The story was a bit to clear and I am hoping it was just someone with a vivid imagination.

What I take from all this is, people are desperate to see Alabama and Saban separate. The man wins back-to-back titles, was gunning for 3 in a row this season, but all you heard all year was, "Saban is getting tired of Tuscaloosa". Yeah, OK. This hurricane of rumors is absurdly wishful thinking.

Im not certain what's gonna happen. But I know message boards are bad sources of legitimate info. And legit writers basically laughed the tcu guy off twitter after his "sources" came in.

FWIW, I'm personally sick of the drama Saban is creating. Yes, Saban is creating it.

Either fish or cut bait.

Over it.

He is NOT bigger than Alabama football.

This is kind of what I was saying. I just find it so odd that the contract has been there for a day or so and it hasn't been signed. That leads me to believe 1 of 2 things. Either he wants more money or ....use your imagination.

Well lately the players are the last to know.

I'm tired of the contract drama every year. Saban might not be the direct source but don't think for a second that Sexton isn't milking this cash cow for all it is worth. It feels like Saban has gotten a renegotiated contract every year since 2008. Eventually it has to stop because we're going to reach a per year threshold where Sexton can't even find an NFL team to play ball with for an extension pay raise.

What I don't understand is why anyone is citing media sources right now as credible about anything. I don't care if it's ESPN, orangeblood, or the pope reporting it. From the wildly bipolar differences in the stories being thrown around, it's clear that the only people truly in the know are the university and Coach Saban himself. Anything else being thrown around is nothing more than speculation, noise, or mischief.

RGW, that's the way I feel too. I mean, it's every bloody year. It always has my attention, but I'm past tired of it. I honestly don't know who to blame: Saban, the media, his agent etc.

For those blaming Coach Saban for creating this drama...if the man is being honest about staying (and right now I have no reason not to take him at his word), then he HAS already addressed the issue by saying repeatedly that he's not going anywhere. Not signing a new contract immediately by itself isn't a reason to call someone a drama queen. Of course, if he goes then, yes, the integrity issue comes into play. Regardless, I'll thank the man for helping to put us back in place as the premiere power in college football.

Am I a little anxious? Of course. The man is an amazing coach and I don't want to lose him. But let's not throw our own to the wolves over nothing.

It goes with the territory when you have the best coach in the business. In light of that fact, I'll take it.

Worth a read. Great insight on the situation at Texas.

And whoa, what's that? It's not from a message board and has the backing of a reputable source? Huh. Go figure.

To be fair, the same questions were levied against Alabama in 2006. Boosters mucking up the coaching job, being invasive, etc. I feel like all programs of great tradition get this story put on them in times of turmoil.

The whole "integrity" aspect is laughable. LSU and Dolphins fans said the same thing seven years ago. It is hypocritical for we, as Alabama supporters, to question the man's integrity. Integrity is worth less than a National Title. If he starts losing or even not winning every game every year, then people will be walking him to the exit.

Saban is the best at what he does and will always be pursued by teams that need a Head Coach. Saban has also moved around many times in his career. Put those together and the drama will not end. Even if Saban signs a contract this year, that will only guarantee he will coach here next year and in December 2014 we'll be dealing with the same stuff again.

I actually don't think it will. I think if Texas replaces Mack Brown this year with a major name, you can probably close the book on Saban rumors.

Unlike a lot of people here, I believed (and still do) the original report months back that Jimmy Sexton had told Texas that Saban would consider going to UTex if "something changed" in Tuscaloosa, and that Texas was the only other school he'd consider.

Now, what has changed in Tuscaloosa? Pretty much nothing. That doesn't mean Saban hasn't listened to Texas (or more accurately, Sexton listened to Texas). But hiring a big-name coach is harder than most people will ever know, and the number of things that have to go right is pretty huge. I think Texas knows this is their window to make a splash hire, and if Saban is their top candidate, it's pretty much now or never. If they hire someone else and that guy stinks up the joint for 3-4 years, Saban really will be too old to consider it.

The only thing I would worry about, from an Alabama fan's perspective, is Mack Brown staying. Unfortunately for Mack, he's just not a great coach, and he is on the tail end of his career. But if he sticks it out for 1-2 years, we'll all be back here next year (and maybe even the next) talking about this same subject. The best thing for Alabama is for Texas to push Mack out and hire a young replacement. Once that's done, the list of things that could push Saban away goes back to the usual, later-career stuff: Grandkids, health concerns, NCAA trouble, etc. None of those seem to exist right now.

Jess, you are smarter than me and I hope you're right. I cannot help but feel that if Saban doesn't accept this job, he will be a target for another great college football program or (god forbid) pro team. He may never take another job, but it will hover among our heads like the Sword of Damocles.

No matter what happens, it has been worth it. I liken it to marrying a truly beautiful woman. You may think that you have it sewn up, but somebody richer and better looking will always be trying to steal her away. It's better than marrying an ugly woman. That's life, I guess, nothing worth having is easy to keep. :)

Thats pretty much right. No other program would be able to make a legitimate push for him. The nfl would be the only suitor left

I think this pretty much sums it up. I hope that they force MB out and hire someone quickly. I honestly believe what CNS and Ms. Saban have said about they are here to stay. I hope that once this blows over, it will be another good move by Sexton to get his client a raise/extension (not that this needed to be done for it to happen if either was important to CNS) and we get another 3-5 years before he decides to head to the lake. I think we were looking at 3-5 more years before any of this latest mess happened, and I think it will still be that way after. I would love for CNS to stay longer, but I just can't see him pulling a Paterno/Bowden and staying too long. RTR!

Hopefully this is settled before Jess has to shut this thread down when it gets too long like the other thread.
