World Cup 2010: Seeds Announced and Draw Coming

Hey everyone,

I know most here don't give a rip about soccer, but for those who do, the 2010 World Cup Draw happens on Friday. The seeded teams and the pots were announced today, and here is how it breaks down:

For those wondering, there will be 8 groups of 4 teams in the initial phase of the World Cup. When the draw happens, they take one teach from each pot until everyone is selected. South Africa will automatically be the first team selected and placed in group A. Teams in the same pot cannot face each other in the group stage. Rules are also in place that will prevent South Africa from being placed in a group with the African teams (So they are guaranteed of being in a group that will have Chile, Paraguay, or Uruguay), and Argentina/Brazil cannot be placed in a group with one of the 3 South American teams.

Seeded Teams (Pot A): (South Africa is seeded because it is the host country)
Argentina, Brazil, England, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, South Africa, Spain

Remaining Pots:
Pot B (Asian, Oceania, and American teams):
Australia, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Honduras, Mexico, United States, New Zealand

Pot C (African and South American teams):
Algeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay

Pot D (Unseeded European Teams):
Denmark, France, Greece, Portugal, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland

Some US soccer supporters are already worried that the Americans will get put in the "Group of Death" like 2006. They weren't too happy that the North/Central American teams got paired with the Asian and Oceanic teams, thus eliminating the chance of catching them in the group stage. As a result, the United States will have to face one of the seeded teams (Unless it's South Africa, they will have one of the top teams in the world), a probable dangerous African team (The two South American teams aren't that good, overall, but the African ones are), and an unseeded European team (Many are hoping not to draw Serbia, Portgual, Denmark, or France).

This pretty much kills our chances unless we play over our heads...
I was reading a couple of commentaries about this, and the kicker is that since we are one of the strongest, if not the strongest, teams in our Pot, we are most likely going to get drawn into another "group of death". Not being able to catch one of the Asian/Oceanic teams is going to hurt.

Yeah, that is my take, too. I was really hoping to be in Pot A. I think that we are almost there...

I'm a little surprised England is on your list. You guys fought like warrior poets.:)
Perhaps if I lived in Scotland, my answer would be a little different. ;) I have ancestors from Scotland, Ireland, and England. I am mostly Scottish that is why I became a follower of their team. I mostly just dislike certain teams like Spain, Brazil, France, and Italy mostly because they win too much.

I hear you. My heritage is a veritable mixed bag. Scottish, English, Dutch, and about 15% Cherokee Indian. Have you ever visited Scotland? I've wanted to go my entire life.

I only support the USA, though I follow a few individual players. Once we are eliminated, this sport can barely hold my attention until the final game...

Thiery Henry is one of my favorite players (from his days with Arsenal), so that controversy involving him is disappointing. Got to feel for the Irish.
I don't really blame Henry, to be honest. Yeah, he did the handball, but it's up to the officials to notice it. Punishing Henry for the officials' mistake is a bit ridiculous, but this is a sport that refuses to use replay so... there you go.

Agreed. I don't blame him, I just hate to see a controversy involving a great player. You're right, the refs missed it.
