Net plus for TN IMO. Before today, TN faced the dilemma of either (a) starting a senior (Stephens) whom many felt wasn't as good as his backups, then next year breaking in a new starter; or (b) keep the senior on the bench, start the underclassmen, and deal with whatever locker room issues arise. Stephens' leaving clears the air. Now the underclassmen can battle it out.

'Course, TN better develop an OL in a hurry or the upcoming season could be ugly.
I agree. I think Simms will be the starter early on. Who knows what Bray will do. He is a true freshman and is very skinny. Simms should be a junior, so he could start for 2 years here.

I think that Coach Dooley plans to put 'The best players' on the field.
Nick has had several chances to be number #1 and has not claimed that job. You gotta make the most of your time on the field, or be prepared to ride the pine. It appears that Nick chose option #3 and is planning to transfer for playing time.
Let's look at this from the point of view of the other QBs.
Why should the Vols start someone just because he's a 5th yr. Senior?
I think you have to go with the QB who will give you the best chance to win.

Indulge me for a second: I'm not trying to start anything, and I admit to not being that up on Tennessee Football.
Here's my question: Does Nick Stephens have 5 years experience?
OR: Does he have one year experience repeated 5 times.
(I think there is one heck of a difference)

IMHO: If Nick is not appreciably better than the other QBs,
I could understand the Coaches planning for the future, and giving playing time to future Qbs.

Let's look at this from an Alabama perspective: Last year... Grant could have sat on the bench sulking, or he could have transferred...
Instead he made the most of limited playing time.
(I hate it, but not everyone can be #1, sometimes there are other players who are younger, bigger, faster, stronger, and have better instincts for how the other guy will respond.)

I wish Nick Stephens well and may he have an injury free last year of college ball. (Wherever he chooses to play)

I gotta say that if the decision were mine; I would rather ride the pine at Tennessee for my last year, than be the starter at some small school.
I agree with your post.

He definitely does not have 5 years of experience here. He is on his 3rd system in 5 years. He has never been picked as starter, outside of a few games in 2008 after Crompton played badly. His only advantage this season would have been that he has had several years as a college QB and he has had more time in a college weight/nutrition program.

Although he couldn't start one at Louisville...

It was by far our toughest test of the season. They didn't rely on gimmicks {barn}. That said, it will be more difficult this year.
It should be much more difficult for them with the lack of personnel this year. Back to the topic, Tennessee seems to be better off with Stephens gone. Are you disappointed he left?

This has been out for a few hours and I figured you guys would be all over it by now.

5th year senior Nick Stephens has quit the UT football team.

Go Vols Xtra article

Maybe someday barners and ucheat fans will realize BAMA has moved to another level and your teams are really that insignificant..

Up until an hour ago I still thought this a rumor.

I am not surprised at all, and do not see this having a large negative effect for them on next year's season. As others have pointed out, the line issues are going to be much more problematic. Stephens always seemed to play a little tight to me what little I saw of him.

He knew this was his last shot to be the guy. I think that he just wants to use his last year of eligibility to actually play and he was seeing TEKEL written on the wall.

I also think he would not have won the starting QB position. Dooley is not afraid to cut the fat. The more attrition they have, the more room they have for pt next year. That is a huge recruiting tool. Saban did the same thing at UA. They do have talent coming back, just not experience...much like our secondary. How well they gel and buy-in will be the question. I still think Kiffin has some left-over thugs on the team. I wonder how long Dooley will put up with them before they are gone too. The quicker problem guys are gone, the quicker they can gel. Not saying Nick was a problem guy, but it was a problem situation.

I hope you are joking (and if so ignore the below), but if not:

Guys, lets not get an all mightier than thou attitude all of a sudden. I mean I am interested in what other teams are doing in our conference. Do I lose sleep at night at what Tenn or any other SEC program might be doing? No!

But lets not act as if we are so "superior" and "significant" that no one elses moves and ideas don't matter.

The idiocy of some fans is where the hatred for others starts...

Not disappointed. I was a little surprised, being that was a senior to be.

Would you expect anything else from a guy nicknamed "Pick" Nick?

A QB nicknamed for throwing INT's is doomed from the start...

If his last name were anything else, no one would be saying these things. He was 17-20 @ LaTech and finished his third year with an amazing 4-8 record.

He may well end up being Neyland II, but to give him any sort of props now is kinda silly, imo.
Your probably right. Dooley is a great recruiter, and if the VILES give him a chance he might become a thorn in our side. Hope not, we'll see.
