It seems as if a great deal of people on here don't understand this.

Basically, it was mentioned by CNS around this time last year, but Bama Nation has continued to use this idea as a rule that governs the recruitment of all Alabama football recruits, which is false.

Coaches like Bryant, and specifically Nick Saban, do a good job in sending messages to recruits and players through the media. He said this last year to warn a few recruits that were looking around that they may want to look really hard because he was too. While that was true, part of it was because he and the new staff were looking at new players to replace them, thus trying to help them out. While this is not always the case this is part of the reason it was said.

At the same time the the original meaning still is used, but to very few recruits. These recruits know their situation and Coach Saban tells them what can and will happen down the line after they commit. They understand the number crunching and alloted spots as well as the average internet goer. So when you see a Burton Scott or some other high profiled recruit taking visits...remember, he and Saban have either known this was going to happen and he will still have a spot...and the "you shop we shop" mentality may mean lots of things but is more of favorite internet saying than anything else.

.... but the barn has 14 private commitments . jk

Agreed . Good and accurate post . IMO , much of it has always been on a case by case basis in regards to how a staff "feels" about an individual prospect - positive or negative . Particularly last year when there just wasn't enough time remaining on the calendar to really get to know the prospects or screw around attempting to decipher their true intentions while pinching the #'s . Yet we still hear that phrase almost as often as "UM invented .... " :)

People like to throw out that phrase but I think everyone understands there are some recruits the coaches will hold a scholarship for and some they won't. A 2 or 3 star recruits starts shopping.....along comes a 4 or 5 star wanting a slot......too bad, you shopped!:p_lol:

I can't help but think that the coaching staff has a use for every recruit we have committed.......or they wouldn't have offered. Still, I'm sure there are some that will want to hold on to their "slot" tightly.

Im not totally sure that's really the point either, regarding who they'll hold a spot for. I think the staff knows whos an iffy commit and who's a solid. Like hearing Star or Tyler Love going to another visit during the season means to me that he was just going for the free game. If its an iffy guy like Ray seemed to be earlier (not so much anymore) then they're certainly shopping around to find a replacement if need be. Not even just commits, but prospects like JJ (as much as I hate to say it) we're not gonna stop looking for the best receiving prospects because we have a shot to get him (favored or not).

RTO you can still see what bamabowtie said about the one recruit in a quote get rid of it please? Definently dont want a recruit seeing it

:BigA:

I always thought "you shop, we shop" applied to last year ONLY, when Saban's staff inherited Shula's recruits, not all of whom were maybe Saban-quality, or guys CNS would have recruited.

However, CNS was not going to pull their offer. Alabama had made a commitment to these men and these men had made a commitment to Alabama and that should be honored regardless.

Yet if these guys were still looking at other schools and weren't committed to Alabama, then CNS felt justified in looking for another prospect that could be his choice.

That's how I understood it. It no longer applies because these are all CNS' recruits, his guys. He has shopped. Now we want to keep them all.

I think the phrase means if your seriously looking around then we need to find someone to take your place period. Yes,there are some recruits we will hold a spot for,but I really think they are a select few,and I believe they understand this!I really don't think this applies to uncommitted prospects as JJ.but it does for most of the verbals.R Marve come to mind last year he was a legit 4* and he started taking visits and HCNS brought N Fanuzzi in for a visit right after, and you know how that ended.

I agree. CNS would use this policy again in a heartbeat. We have a couple right now that are being rumored as "soft". Is the stafff supposed to wait around on them and not do anything?

I agree here...I think the "You shop, we shop" phrase is used on here to kid around a little bit...but the premise holds for every commitment every year. The message is clear: we want you, but we want your loyalty also. If you're going to seriously consider other schools after you've comitted here...you've got to be prepared to deal with the fact that the coaching staff will be planning to fill your spot in case you decide to commit to another school.

I don't think B. Scott is afraid to look around because of the "you shop, we shop" deal...I think he made a decision for 'Bama and he knows this is where he wants to be...but he wants to go and enjoy the recruiting process. There won't be another time in your life like this...so go enjoy it.

At the end of the day, there's an understanding that if you stay loyal to us, we'll stay loyal to you.

I believe that there is a good possibility that the committed kids now "shopping around" have an understanding with our coaches that they want to take advantage of the incentives the recruiting process extends to top athletes!!!
I would have LOVED to been able to take trips, be treated (and EAT) like a King when I was 17 or 18 years old.
