Your window on the world? - Part 1

Beautiful out today!

Pruned Mom's Queen Palms. Something I do every month or so. Mostly just to get the flower pods off before they open but also removing the older fronds as needed.

There's one in the front and two in back. Used to be three in back but one died from Fusarium Wilt.

Yard waste pickup is every Wed. so I usually do this work on Tuesdays. I cut each frond in half and neatly stack them up with the spears on top. Makes it easier for the G-men to pick up.....

Why before the flower opens?

Why before the flower opens?

Thanks for the question, @Toddrn -

The flowers on this palm species are beautiful when they come out - but are followed by fruit in mass which eventually fall off the fruiting branch and make a mess below. They are the size of large grapes and can number in the hundreds. As their flesh ripens and slowly decays they can draw fruit flies and other insects. Kinda makes a mess of things.

Also, if you wait to cut off that fruiting branch until the fruit form the thing is huge, very heavy, and ultimately you'll have the berries falling off anyway as you do the removal. The way to avoid all of this is to get up there and cut the flower stalks off while they are still in the sheath, which looks look a spear.

I do the same thing with the Foxtail Palms, except they flower stalks are not nearly as large. But the fruit are messy when they ripen and fall down.
