Japanese zookeepers have abandoned their four-year-long attempt to persuade two spotted hyenas to mate... after they realised both animals were male.

Experts at the Maruyama Zoo, in Sapporo, northern Japan, said they were told Kami and Kamutori were a 'male and female couple' by the South Korean zoo, in Daejon, who sold them the animals in 2010.

But after a year of waiting without joy, they finally tested Kami - who they thought was female - only to find she had male genitalia.

The reason gay hyena couples have more disposable income is because they don't have little hyenas. Everybody knows that.

I bet these two are going on a cruise very soon.

Followup article:
Zoo turns two male hyenas gay.
Wrong, I think. From your original article, you quote "only to find she had male genitalia". Since the author still refers to her as a "she" even though "it" has male junk, doesn't that mean transgendered? And if it has male parts, but is a she, and aint interested in other males, doesn't that mean lesbian instead of gay? This is all so confusing.:conf3: ;)

So they'll just adopt instead?
Latest news: Gay hyena couple attempts adoption, but the adoption agency gets it wrong, and sends them a black lab. The hyenas understandably feel that having a puppy that isn't a hyena will be bad for pack morale, and complain that the adoption agency screwed up. The hyenas are now labeled by the media as racist puppy haters who have no compassion for the poor black labs in the world.

Males in most hyena species are larger than females, though the spotted hyena is exceptional, as it is the female of the species that outweighs and dominates the male. Also, unlike other hyenas, the female spotted hyena's external genitalia closely resembles that of the male. This is known as a seebell.
