Hard times have befallen the U.S. Postal Service. Mail deliveries are down and they are bleeding red, so they have asked the government to permit them to drop deliveries on Saturday.
Perhaps this makes sense to reduce operating costs. But, there should be some strings attached. The loss of Saturday delivery means we give up 17% of the service. It seems reasonable to expect the Postal employees to take a 17% cut in pay to adjust for fewer hours worked.
In keeping with the survival practices of private businesses, we should expect a significant layoff. Since the Postal Service is reporting a large drop in the mail volume, it stands to reason that they need to reduce headcount.
But, I forget; this is a government entity, so we are expected to accept the reduction in service while they do little or nothing to reduce their operating expenses.

Some articles are saying Tuesday mail will be stopped and not Saturday. Wouldn't that be weird?
Remember, government employees get more paid holidays than the private sector. Since many of those holidays seem to fall on Monday, dropping Tuesday delivery would seriously cut into mail delivery on the holiday weeks. It would seem more logical to drop Monday delivery, but the government doesn't use common reasoning.

USPS isn't a government job, is it?

Its a monopoly that's loosing serious money anyways. Plus, I could do without a day that consists of walking to the mailbox to only find junk mail.

Yup. It seems like Tuesday or Wednesday is my weekly "junk mail" day.

I also love it when something really important (like a check or a tax statement) is buried amongst Chuckie Cheese ads and fliers.

Or when I get folks' mail from two streets over.

My Mom sent me a package in late September via USPS First Class. It arrived exactly two months later. To the day.

Do they plan on lowering the price of a stamp? Seriously, I don't care about Saturday mail delivery. There are other options if you need something delivered on Saturday...

I'm sure we have some postal employees in our viewership, and I do not mean this in a bad sort of way, but I don't think I've ever met anyone who said "I used to work for the postal service."

Those are lifetime jobs, aren't they? If one becomes a postal employee, are they guaranteed a job for life?

I'm surprised more poeple don't go postal. ba dum pssh
