I really agree with this assessment. I know I'm younger, having only graduated from Alabama three years ago, but this is how my father and grandfather talk about decades past.Years ago, when Shug Jordan was at Auburn, I think there was a real respect between Alabama and Auburn. Maybe I am naive about that, since all the people in my extended family, if they cared at all about football, were Bama supporters. But Shug and Bear Bryant, both WWII veterans, respected each other, and this seems to have translated to the fans on both sides.
I have been told by a man who was a student government vice-president at Bama in the early sixties, that at that time Bear Bryant led a coterie of Bama student leaders, including him, to Auburn, and they discussed with a similar group from the Auburn student government how to promote good relations between the two schools.
What we see today is a different situation, in my opinion. Finebaum encourages the rivalry. Bobby Lowder has specifically stated that Birmingham used to be ruled by Bama and that Auburn has cut into that "rulership." He has rationalized that if it were not for Bear Bryant's tenure at Bama, Auburn would at least be "even" with Bama. Randy Kennedy, the sports editor of the Mobile Register, is a big Auburn (and Finebaum) supporter. This is a different "world" from the sixties, when Benny Marshall and the Birmingham News pulled for the guy who happened to be the leader -- and that was Bear Bryant and his Crimson Tide. I hasten to add that if you go through those old sportspages, you will also see a great deal of respect for Auburn football.
I used to take pride in the fact that as a born and bred Alabamian, I knew what winning football was like, whether it was at Tuscaloosa OR at Auburn. I noticed that at both schools they seemed to understand football better than, say, in Louisiana, where I spent many years. Now, I am not so sure that I have the same regard for Auburn that I used to have. Maybe it's because of the six straight Auburn wins -- or maybe it is that I don't think Auburn respects football tradition in this state quite the same way that I do.
Yeah, I was gonna mention pulling for them over Notre Dame too, but you beat me to it. That aside, well, no.I would pull for Auburn if they were playing say Satan's minions.
