Our Air MAC will be O.K..... As I guessed, contrary to the warmup watchers, the highly hyped QB comp this Spring wasn't or if it was would be for #2. The coaches knew it, the players knew it, and anyone who had an opportunity to watch Spring scrimmages knew it. JMO, but if AJ is anything close to what the homers forecast, he'll be #2 early on...with any future comps for#2 between him and the VA newcomer. And, as a cohort says, odd men out.....
Someone had Joe Pendry say the OL is much easier to coach now. Last season our run blocking was aggressive and this year will be more aggressive which will set up some combination blocks for pass protection. And this same person had this to say about McElroy and Starr; McElroy is the one to take a 7 play drive 80 yards for a TD using up 6 mins on the clock. Star has the ability to take it 80 yards in one 10 second play.

The news about the receivers is most positive, as we need someone besides Julio to be a viable threat. To me, the offensive line is the biggest question mark and if it is able to make the running game go, I believe Greg McElroy will be just fine.

G-Mc is going to do fine. He has always thrown a pass receivers like to catch. He also throws a nice pass rolling out of the pocket. He doesn't really scramble much. He does a great job of recognizing the pressure and rolling away from it instead of scrambling. Its much more controlled than we've seen in the past. Although JP overcame it last year for the most part lately our qb's have developed a case of the scramble for your life out of necessity. With Greg's abilities and our improved line I think you will see him move away from the pressure and throw it away when needed instead of resorting to street ball.

i expect greg to be fine this season. i actually think he will be a upgrade overall in qb play. he is aggressive, and not afraid to go where the open receiver is. the coaches have been with him on the sidelines the past two years. he has to be mentally prepared, and physically, i expect him to have a lot of confidence. like tommymac said he went thru the same scenario at his high school behind a fantastic qb chase daniels, then his senior year he broke all the passing records. dont sound like a young man afraid to take over. i also agree, that after the first 3 games, we will know what he can do with this team. the offensive line will have to come together, and he will have better receivers, and a bevy of rbs. a defense that should be able to get him the ball back often. i also expect him to throw a few interceptions more than wilson had as a senior, because of his confidence. coach saban will be in his ear all season.

You are right about that Bayou, and nothing opens up the defense for an accurate passer like a solid running game. I think we will see more connections in the future on those passes we work so hard to set up with the run. There were some beautiful plays last year that we set the defense up for and just over threw them again and again. Some of those plays we worked a whole half to set up the defense only to blow them. If we can start connecting on those here and there, look out! Coach Mc loves to set those up with the run.

I always wondered what 2006 did to JPW's psyche.
Fortunately, GMac did not have to suffer for that like JPW did. ("Down-set-hike-Holy cow! Where did he come form?") That may be a case in which not playing is better than playing.
Yes, that was frustrating a year ago. With a great running game (and defense), you can win most of the time with an average qb.
With an good qb, you can win championships.
I'm with Tidewater, I believe JPW suffered from being gun-shy after 2006, and although he was greatly improved last year when it came to simply throwing the ball away and not turning it over, we just didn't have that big-play capability in the passing game.
Hard to critique someone who has nvr started in the SEC. You can throw up his high school stats and this and that, but really no one will one know until the season gets going. I personally from what I have seen of him in high school vids and recently have the personal opinion that as far as talent goes he could potentially be one of the most talented QB's to ever come to T'town only time will tell.
Oh and just one other thing, look up Coach MacElwain's bio and read a little bit. He is one of the premiere QB coaches in the country he takes avg QB's and turns them into great QB's.

I have this feeling that GMac is going to give us memories of Gary Hollingsworth. If you will remember, he was known more for accuracy than arm strength and we had a very explosive offense during his time especially with Homer directing things. I think we have a very similar setup with CJM calling the plays.
I think GMac has the potential to be the most accurate passer we have had in years. JPW was particularly accurate with certain throws, especially the deep ball, neither was Brodie although his inaccuracy was largely attributed to poor line play. Honestly, I dont remember Kitchens, Zow, or Watts being particularly accurate either.

I am sorry but I still havent bought in, to the whole GmAc not having any arm strength thing. I know Saban said it but I think he was just being a smart@!! I say this b/c of 2 BIG points....#1 Greg Mac is 6-3 220 lbs(he is as big as a OLB ask yourself 6-3 220 and he has a weak arm really??? you think???) and #2 Maybe every1 forgot or I dunno but the arm I saw at the end of the AU blow out was a 40yd rope that nvr got higher than 15-20ft off the ground for a TD Alabama says Eli Gold!!

I think you're right Bayou, I believe that we're gonna be pleasantly surprised with our O-line, another year in the S&C program and another year under Coach Pendry will start paying dividends. I think we'll also be very effective throwing the ball, but we'll be throwing it when we want to instead of when we have to.
I agree with you that GMac's arm strength will not be an issue. After all, it's not like he has a noodle arm, but arm strength can't be judged by one's size or overall physical strength. For some reason, there are plenty of skinny type guys that can absolutely burn it. I think there must be some kind of kinetic factor involved where skinny guys have more "whip" in their delivery. Brodie was a good example, McCarron too. I know that in all the years I played softball, most of the best arms I saw were with thinner guys.
