I get a constant earfull from my LSU friend that Bama only has 7 legit NC's. He always argues the 73 NC when we were beat by ND in the bowl game. I always tell him that was the system in place kinda like the system that allowed a 2 loss LSU team into the NC game. Do you have friends that say the same thing and how do you respond?

These two places are great resources. I count 11 along with these websites and a few books. The 7 he is referring to are only the 7 AP national championships. You could simply remind him of who was the 2003 AP national champion (it was USC, LSU won the BCS).

LOL . I usually just respond with a statement along the line of Bama being ripped out of more NC's than their program has so much as even sniffed . If they want more , I break out the the ol' copy & paste as I do here 5-6 times a year ....

I believe 8 of the 12 to be 100% indisputable .....
25 , 30 , 34 , 61 , 64 , 78 , 79 , 92

(9) 1926 isn't really debatable - Played Stanford in the Rose Bowl to a tie . The voting organizations of that era thought we were the best .
(10) 1965 might be somewhat debatable - Seems legitimate . Other teams were crowned by a couple of polls . At the very least , it was shared .

1941 is pretty bogus .
1973 is bitter to settle on but , we lost to the dome on the field of play .

Of those 12 titles , there are 10 solid NC's .

When we were denied ........
(11) 1936 - Only undefeated team . Anti-Southern bias ?
(12) 1945 - Undefeated , won the Rose bowl - THE NC GAME - in a blowout . We were at war and Army was given a fraudulent gift .
(13) 1966 Politics of the day .

When we have a right to complain ........
1975 - Rather legitimate claim . Eye of the beholder ? 14 ?
1977 - Equal record with an incredibly crushing Sugar Bowl win ! 15 ?

Other years when some polls or outlets felt Bama was worthy but , really were not .... 37-50-62-63-74-80-94

JOMHO but , 12 still shorts Bama 1 to 3 NC's .

No schools other than N.D. , SoCal & Oklahoma have any right to discuss NC's at this level . The thoughts , questions , doubts and opinions expressed from fans of any other schools have ZERO credibility . They just fail to warrant a seat at the same table . What should we do ? Feel bad and apologize or something ?

I don't argue with people about MNCs. They are all mythical. They are like Heismans - the product of opinion and popularity polls.
I'm of the opinion that NONE are mythical . Whichever system was or is in place , a title and the trophy which comes with it exsist and are awarded . When you own , hold and display something , it's anything but mythical .

JMO :)

LOL - I don't have a problem with them, but they have never been anything other than opinion polls. Before widespread television broadcasts of every game, they were based on some very, very thin stuff. You had people voting on this who had seen no more than a few teams on their ballot actually play...

We have so many more than anyone else, I've never really thought about it. Is it important?
Heck yeah it's important. He started this argument 1986 when we were room mates in the Marine Corp and I plan to win it. BTW we were way less civil back then. We havn't missed a game since 1991 season. He will be meeting me in Ttown on Friday and will be tailgating on the quad on Saturday. Anybody that wants to rough him up just let me know and I'll lure him to your tailgate.

Just as one or two of his could be argued, so could a few that he should have won but didn't. That is what the use of the word "mythical" is all about. Ask any Bama fan about 1966...

The media hated that Bryant was about to slaughter one of its sacred cows (Saturday Evening Post). That 1966 deal wasn't about football. It was about politics and retribution.

A topic for another off-season thread...

Very true . I know where you and many , many others are coming from with the "mythical" tag but I think it's a debate which usually ends up with a discussion about a D1 playoff . Things is , if anyone cares to study the results of the NCCA basketball tourney , a playoff does not solve anything . All one would do is display a "survivor" far more often than a clear-cut "winner" . Most years when there is a clear-cut unanimous #1 team , they only manage to win the tourney 40% of the time . Why should a team just have to keep playing and when all it does is increase their odds of failure ?

I'm one who never wants to see a team tied for 3rd in one half of the SEC and which does not play for the SEC title claim any sort of title . Like .... "Wow ! Look at us . We finished 3rd in the East , wrapped up our season with a 13-4 record and a NC !" . Maybe we should only award NC's every 10 years . That is if a team can go 120-0 after playing every football team in D1 . Afterall , that's the only way to ever remove doubt or whining for some . And I call those types ..... barners :D

Again , that's just my old-school opinion :)
