Brandon Spikes THUG Play vs UGA

I think Mr. Gator has difficulty accepting responsibility. Instead of focusing on his own (or in this case a member of his team's) actions, he wants to point fingers at everyone else. Don't give me a ticket officer. Others were speeding. Hey, he didn't get a 15 yard penalty, so why should I take responsibility FOR TRYING TO BLIND A MAN.
Exactly.

Just amazing, really.

Mods can we go ahead and get rid of this self righteous kid, PDXGator...I'm not one to be quick to judge, but this guy has obviously forgot what MB he is at...

Yep, there are some gator fans who think gouging a players eyes should be pretty much ok.

But, if there was film of an opposing player gouging ole Timmy Tebow's eyes in a pile, you can bet he'd be raising holy hell!

LOL at all of this! Suspend him for the whole vandy game. Call it goods. It happens guys. Its not like he was playing us.

also..

*searches for 'Ban Him' smily*

When he breaks the rules, just like everyone else, he'll get DAS BOOT. :) Until then, y'all get to continue trying to convince him the error of his ways.

I remember seeing some gator fans whining about Kentucky fans cheering when Tebow got hurt, even though they had fans doing the gator chomp while Prothro was lying in the endzone. They whine about cheers but think eye gouges are okay. I guess it depends on who is doing what.

He's a Gator, and we now officially know that Gator fans love pointing their fingers, specifically at other peoples eyes.

I'll never understand why people try to justify awful actions. He poked me, so I poked him back. The bigger man moves on. PDX is not that man, and neither is Spikes.

Sidebar:

There are an insane amount of HD cameras focusing on every scrum and skirmish during a game. If this happened "on every play" we'd have a lot more video evidence. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but the camera's don't lie, this is the first eye-gouge I've seen this year.

Anyone surprised?

"The Southeastern Conference has reviewed and accepted the disciplinary actions taken by the University of Florida regarding football student-athlete Brandon Spikes. The university suspended Spikes for the first half of its next game (vs. Vanderbilt, Nov. 7) for an unsportsmanlike act during the Gators' last game (vs. Georgia, Oct. 31)."

Sorry, but I couldn't figure out how to post the link.

What hasn't been said yet, and what should be said, is that this game has become increasingly "chippy" the last few seasons, and it's time for these two coaches to step up and show some leadership. Meyer and Richt need to start living up to the golden image that the media has created for them, at least as far as running their respective programs. We have to hear all the time about how Richt is a good, honest, Christian man. We have to hear all the time about how tough Meyer is, about how he's a disciplinarian, how he's the measuring stick in the SEC (according to the nat'l media). Well guys, it's time for these two to step things up and tell their players that these chippy, dirty plays are done. They have no place in football, regardless of who started it, or who's trying to show up who. Play football, play it clean, and play it between the whistles. These two coaches need to be men, and they need to expect, nay require, that their players be men on the field. Last time I checked, men don't gouge at eyes, or take late cheap shots, or try to intentionally hurt opponents. No more excuses, or finger pointing, or whining and crying. Meyer and Richt, the onus is on you two to clean this up and return it to a respectable rivalry!

The only person I respect on ESPN: Golic just said " BS crossed the line" And the suspension "is a joke" handed out by UM. He repeated this theme several times!

I played, coached, and watched football for over fifty years, and I have never seen anything quite like what Brandon Spikes did on that TV screen.

Football is CONTROLLED violence. What Spikes did is uncontrolled and undisciplined.

Acceptable injuries on a football field are accidental. If this action of Spikes' had its intended result, that result could have been a permanent injury resulting in a person's inability to see. That would be unacceptable.

What Courtney Upshaw did led to a misdemeanor charge, which, if I read correctly, was dropped. Does the Gator fan think that Spikes should be charged by law enforcement and the court?

What Spikes did was so obviously voluntary, and therefore not accidental, it seems to me that something more should be done than a half-game suspension agreed to by Meyer and, apparently, Slive.

You start trying to deprive someone of his eyesight, then you are asking for a primal instinct to take over. That is why rules and laws are made, and a game such as football expects a certain amount of discipline and decorum. If no proper, sufficient penalty for this action is taken by Slive (or Meyer), then we can expect more of this stuff on the football field.

In my opinion, Spikes should never play another down of SEC football.

What gets me is that if a guy as big as Spikes wants to make a statement, he doesn't have to resort to stuff like this; there are MANY ways to retaliate on a football field without making a classless thug out of yourself. The best way I know of, especially for a guy Spikes' size, would be to deliver a hard, legal hit.

This action of Spikes' speaks to what I have heard before about kids who come from homes where civil obedience simply isn't taught. He obviously doesn't know any better, and a half-game suspension against Vanderbilt isn't going to teach him what he needs to learn.

This is a dirty wrong trick to do in a game there is no room for that junk in football.

What can you expect from Urban Meyer though just look back at what Percy Harvin Illegibly did. It was said once Harvin choked his receivers coach and Urban just covered it up. Urban needs to take more responsibility for what his players are doing.

Spikes should be out for at least one game.

Scene from a new Christmas Story:

Santa: "Hello little Gator fan. What do you want for Christmas."

Little Boy: "I want a Brandon Spikes action figure."

Santa: "It'll poke your eye out."

Har-de-har-har. :PDT_bis:

Here's the way I see it: If this kind of thing goes on all the time; happens in every pile; is just football, it's a violent game; then I for one say it's time to make some folks into object lessons and get it stopped. Those of us who are idealists believe that college football is a microcosm that teaches kids important lessons about real life. Play hard; practice long; endure; respect your opponent; learn discipline; and a hundred other valuable lessons. Trying to do serious bodily harm to your opponent after the play is over is NOT one of those life lessons.

If this kind of violence happened in a restaurant, the perpetrator would be charged with a felony. You say "if you tackle someone violently in a restaurant, the same would apply". True, but tackling is a part of the game, and millions of dollars and millions of hours have been spent designing equipment to lessen the chance that a violent tackle will cause a serious injury. Eye gouging is NOT part of the game. If it is (as some say), then it should not be. It's time to make a start at ending this kind of criminal behavior in the game that I love.

Spikes should never play another down of college football. That's my opinion, and I'm proud to say that NYBF speaks with my mind on all of his posts on this thread.

I can definitely agree with this sentiment...

All fans, gators, Tide fans whoever, are quick to pass judgement on other teams and other teams' players when they perceive something bad to happen...

...but when its their team's players, every excuse in the book gets trotted out...

I am as guilty of it as others, and can be a homer for my team, I am not sure many on here have the self knowledge tor realize they are in the boat right next to me.
