We had it all sealed up until Ingram committed his 1st career fumble, they scored a TD on blown coverage, and then recovered an onside kick. Then after a 30-something yard completion with a blatant uncalled holding on Dareus, Mt. Cody stepped up and blocked his 2nd of the day. So....while we broke down, we still won the game. UThug didn't lose it, we won it.

We're pretty much just happy to be there... understand we'd probably be no better than the 4th best team in the SEC, and hope to just put up a good fight to make your expected victory at least hard fought.

It's all in how you look at things (and being able to read between the lines). For example, you credit Bama with being 13-2 in our last fifteen games and UT as winners of 19 straight. Both factual. However, if you back that up to the last two FULL seasons, you'll see that Bama is 25-2 (owning 12 and 13 game win streaks), while UT is 25-1 (with a 19 game win streak). Factual as well --- it's just all in how you look at it (or read into it).
Both of these teams deserve to be in this game. Both have incredible teams with strengths AND weaknesses. Everything else is subjective.

I tole ole Wade how happy I was that ever single team we plaided this year was no gud at all and how bad our conference was and how I hope we can stay within 40 points of Alabama.. how me and ole Nick are good frens and how he prepares so very well fer games and stuff.

Tyrod Taylor's a great QB? Who says? Ryan Mallet? Bama got him in his third game with Arkansas. Mallet's got a howitzer hooked to his shoulder but he's still raw, after a full season. Jevan Snead? Regressed badly this year. Tim Tebow? Great QB, great leader, but hardly a great passer. Fact is, the QB play in the SEC was generally down all over this season.
When Alabama fans say Texas has never faced a running attack like the Tide's this year, I agree. It remains to be seen how we'll do in that area. But when they say they've seen plenty of guys like Colt McCoy and plenty of spread offenses like UT's, I beg to differ. Like our rush defense, it remains to be seen how the Tide will do against the Horns' passing game.
Well, this thread was originally about UT's OL. I do really believe we've faced better OLs than UT's. I think even the national pundits, who aren't really Bama fans, would agree. I really think your OL is your Achilles' Heel. If it doesn't hold up, there is no passing game to speak of, or running game either. I think all the other areas become subordinant. Running game, passing game, Bama will put some points on the board. If UT's OL can't hold up, then UT, in all probability, loses the game...
I just get tired of the braggadocious talk. I was just taught differently than most folks I guess. You can really get a measure of a person by how they handle success.
Exactly, I don't see their OL pulling a rabbit out of their hat and somehow managing to play better than they have all year (maybe even on a different level, if they want to beat us) against the best defense they've faced all year, in fact a defense that I'd say they've seen nothing like. Nebraska's D was good, but Bama is going to give Texas a new meaning for the word hell. A painful crimson meaning.
Our line play has been inconsistent, but they're not as bad as they looked against Nebraska.
I mean, we ran for 150 yards against a top-flight OU defense. And probably with a reasonably good ypc. The problem against OU was that we turned the ball over inside the OU 5-yard line TWICE. Once on a fumble when McCoy was fighting for extra yards (would have been first-and-goal) and once on a miscommunication with a true freshman wideout (where the receiver cut off the route and McCoy threw it right to the defender). We only scored 16 against OU but we were only a few yards from scoring 30.
Against Nebraska, it looked like our linemen were asked to do something they haven't done all year. We looked like we were trying to cut block Suh. Some lines cut block on every play (Baylor in the Big 12, some of the service academies, etc.). It can be an "equalizer" when a team is outmanned, just as spreading out a good defense can help to somewhat offset a talent edge.
Anyway, lines that do that are often smaller and faster individuals. For UT, we looked silly trying to do it. We got called for chop blocks on our first offensive snap of each half. Both calls were suspect at best. Once the defender wasn't engaged with a blocker and the other time our O-linemen didn't even hit anybody. Both times it put us in 1st and 25, which not only makes it very unlikely to convert, it started both halves by making UT punt from deep in its own territory and setting up Nebraska at midfield.
Just speculation, but it looked like UT tried to change up its schemes and philosophies for the Nebraska game, and our big interior linemen couldn't execute it at all. We'd have been better off just running our offense.
As a side note here, I'd mention that Utah rushed for THIRTEEN whole yards and beat Bama. I'd wager my year's salary that Texas can do better than 13 yards.

GMac, on the one hand, you keep telling us to quit poor-mouthing. On the other, you post messages like this. Which is it to be?
1) Utah used the short pass as its running game
2) Teams have tried that this year to no avail.
and MOST IMPORTANTLY,
3) we played Utah one year ago...that game is really motivation for our players to finish and not much else. They exposed a weakness we spent a summer+ working on. Trying to infer success from a game played one year ago is much sillier than us trying to infer success from yall's Nebraska game.
Fair enough, we all know games such as this are won and lost in the trenches. No quarrel there. In Texas' system, however, the OL doesn't have to hold their blocks very long on their short pass plays. Colt usually lines up in the shotgun, but in every other way it's like a three-step drop. If the receiver's open, the ball's out before the defense can get to Colt. What happened against OU and Nebraska was that the defense sat on our (overly predictable) short routes, Colt had nowhere to go with the ball, and he got pressured fast.
This is why I rant about Texas breaking their offensive tendencies and the importance of our secondary receivers stepping up. To put it briefly, if we hit some short passes and can go with the hurry-up, the big men in the middle of Bama's defense will begin to tire and other things will open up. Our O-line is not the O-line we had in '05, but I believe they can get the job done, given a good game plan and good execution.
Well, obviously, part of our strategy will be to rest our DL on the sidelines while your offense rests. However, the Bama fans know our DL rotation is three deep - and I mean who play in every game. I don't see a pass only offense tiring them out. Which, once again, comes back to your OL. I see that as being the game.
