BamaOnLine.com - Big Cat Quotes II: Recruits talk Auburn
Mitch Smothers, OL, Springdale, Ark.

"It went great. It was my first time there and it being Big Cat Weekend made it a lot of fun. They split us up into teams and we did different competitions and then hung out with the coaches. I had met Coach (Gus) Malzahn before, but that was my first time meeting the others. I really liked them. I really liked Auburn. They are definitely high on my list. I like the people and atmosphere. The people are great. Auburn is now in my top three with Alabama and Arkansas. I don't really have a favorite of those three. Those are the three I'm mainly looking at now."

Xzavier Dickson, DE, Griffin, Ga.

"It went good. I had been to Auburn a few times before so I was already a little familiar with it. I had a good time. I liked the fun activities they had with all the recruits. It was something I'd never done at any other college. It was just a fun visit. I got to meet a lot of recruits like Gabriel Wright and Ray Drew. Everybody had a good time. It helped Auburn with me. It moved them up. I'll be back for a camp this summer. Right now everyone has a chance. I'll make my announcement at the Under Armour All-American Game (in January)."

"It went good, real good. I hung out with some good guys. It was an experience that I'd never experienced before. It rained a little, but even still, it was a lot of fun. I've experienced everything at Auburn except for spending the night and just hanging out with the players. I got to do that this time. I hung out with
Nosa Eguae. He's an awesome guy. There were a lot of other guys. Mario Fannin. They were all good guys. It wasn't a visit where you just went and talked to the coaches face-to-face, or talked to them and not interact with them. I could've done that on the phone. I went to Big Cat because there were some of the best players up there, and there were. It was good. I got to see Auburn more than just the football side of it.

"I love how they stress family. You can't stress that enough. Football is just football. It's what you know. It's what you have. It's like what Coach (Gene) Chizik said, football is what he does, but a father and husband is what he is. Football is just something that he is good at, but it doesn't run his life. And family isn't something they just use. It's not something they say for recruiting. All you have to do is go there and see that they are for real.

"Auburn is still up there. It's Auburn and Alabama. I don't want to put anything in order, but coming off of that visit, it's hard not to like Auburn. There isn't a leader, but those two schools are at the top. I'll be back at Auburn in the summer for a camp and again in the fall for a game or two. I'm still planning to announce at the Under Armour All-American Game (Jan. 7), but it depends on how I feel. I don't think anything will happen anytime soon, though."

You have to give the Barn some credit. They are recruiting better than I expected. However, I will take the Tide's recruting team over anyone else.

I am surprised they didn't get a lot of commitments over the Big Cat weekend.
The ones they got weren't huge surprises. I wonder if the Big Cat stuff is losing its luster.

I am agreeing here because I did not hear anything I did not expect to here. I actually thought someone like Rose was going to commit to them but did not. I also saw one of their current commits that was there say that he will visit UT this summer. Another one was GW who last time he visited put the Barn on top and after spending all weekend there does not name them a leader just said they were in his top 2 with us.

This family garbage they spew makes me sick. They are the quickest to turn on their "family" as any "family" I have seen.
I wouldn't call it garbage, somewhat desparate, but not garbage. Selling the idea of "family" means Auburn really doesn't have anything else to sell recruits on AU. CGC can't promise wins, or championships, or even major bowl games, but gosh darn it, he can promise they can be a family while they watch Alabama continue to be the relevent school in the state.

Frazier going to Auburn to play for Mal-a- zahn will be a colossal mistake for his wanting to develop into an NFL quarterback. Not just Arkansas, but a whole host of other schools would have better suited him but ever since he was recruited to Shiloh from podunk West Fork, all he's ever heard was the slobbering over Gus from that bunch. Sadly I have nephew playing there right now, it's hard to root for him having had to sit with that bunch.

I personally think his best position on the field would be at safty after having watched him in person the past two seasons.

On Coe, I've heard he's at Arkansas today. Petrino is wanting him at RB while most want him at LB. The kid prefers RB, or so I've heard. He's the type of big back that Petrino loves

Interesting that Frazier is another Arkansas recruit on the Gus Malzhan pipeline. What will Chiznik do when Gus moves on to head coaching gig somewhere?
It's the Shiloh pipeline that's the driving point. Gus coached there for a good amount of time. Gus did leave and take over then Springdale High with Mustain and Williams there and won the 7A title. Springdale was divided into two schools, Harber and just plain Springdale. Brey Cook is at Harber and favors Ark and Ok and Smothers is at the old one and favors Bama and Ark. While Gus is viewed upon as a darling in the community, it's not as strong at those schools as it is at Shiloh. Shiloh is all about Gus, for a Baptist school you'd think they'd not worship false gods but that's how they hold Mal-a-zahn. You couldn't imagine the direct and indirect pressure Fraizer got to go to where Gus is.

Petrino hasn't exactly had QBs or RBs excel in the NFL.

Smothers was so impressed with Big Cat Weekend that he committed to Arkansas this morning.

Again, it's a Shiloh in Springdale thing.

Brey Cook is the most important recruit of the three in my opinion.

Oh yes, I noticed last year it Cheezek was all about Family, Feeling and Fitting. It is a Family here. It Feels right here. I will Fit in here. While those things are not bad things, I would hope our players don't come here for those reasons.

When you think about it, it is really funny. Someone has convinced players that they will be Family even though they will be a bunch of strangers getting together for four or five years and then never see most of those people again. I know "bonding" does take place, but come on, it is about football, not Family.

Well, I think selling the whole family thing is getting old, but I roomed w/ 4 other guys on my team my freshman year at Bama and keep in touch w/ all but one of them. Also, 2 guys from my team were groomsmen at my wedding. So I get where the recruits are coming from...

The irritating part is the fact that Auburn acts as if that atmosphere only exists there. Every team is a family.
