I don't think this had anything to do with depth. Coach Saban said himself it was about accountability. No question that Woodson would have gotten a lot of playing time this year and probably started next year. I think this cements Kendall Kelly as a safety for this season...
I wish Nick had enrolled early now. He would have benefited a lot from it.Yeah, that's what I figured.
And, yes, I just saw that Kelly is slated for defense. I think it's good news for Gibson that he's staying on offense. Depending on how Nick Perry and Jarrick Williams perform in practices, I still wouldn't be shocked to see Milliner or Fulton given a shot at safety. I'm not expecting it, but wouldn't be shocked.
Isn't Carswell the WR people have been awwing over this summer?

Nothing on Deion Belue?
Efforts to reach Belue were unsuccessful. Last week one of his former coaches at Deshler, Pat Smith, said only that Belue is continuing to work toward eligibility.
Having read that, I think we'll see Sims take the last spot and Belue try to join the team whenever he becomes eligible.Sims has been enrolled at East Mississippi Community College with the intention of leaving for Alabama if the NCAA Clearinghouse approves his eligibility in time for the fall term. His father, Sonny Sims, said he expected news on his son's eligibility Monday.
“It's supposed to be (Monday), but we'll just wait it out whenever it comes,†the elder Sims said. “I don't know how it could be bad news, because we've done everything we had to do.
Well, we're looking at Mark Barron, BJ Scott, Robert Lester, Demarcus Milliner, John Fulton, DeQuan Menzie, Phelon Jones, Dre Kirkpatrick, Hunter Bush, Mark Holt, Will Lowrey, Tyler Maddox, Wesley Neighbors, Kyle Penington, Nick Perry, Jarrick Wlliams and Kendall Kelly. That's 17 D Backs now on scholarship.
(Did I leave anybody out?) I think it's a pretty impressive list.
Coach Saban wouldn't have given them scholarships if they didn't have the goods. So, I don't think that there's that much to worry about, considering their talent level and who's coaching them up. Granted there won't be a lot of game experience but I have all the confidence in the world that we'll muddle through somehow.
I really don't see why people are upset with this. If Saban is publicly saying that it was an issue of accountability and that losing him isn't a problem I am not going to view it as one. We all know the effects that bad eggs can have on teams. I have full faith that Saban will have the defense ready with or without Woodson. I read an article that said Saban's LSU NC team had two freshman in the secondary. If anyone can piece together a secondary it is going to be Coach Saban.
I remember when the news about Patrick Peterson leaving Ole Miss came out someone mentioned the high percentage of MS players who end up fizzling out. This just adds another one to the list. It really does seem to be a trend with players from MS.
I really like your post gives a good perspective on the amount of bodies we have in the secondary. Although I believe Hunter Bush, Mark Holt, Will Lowrey, Tyler Maddox, and Kyle Pennington aren't scholarship players. But regardless we still have a good amount of athletes capable of playing, and more importantly with an attitude and work ethic in line with Coach Saban's standards.
