Rod Woodson to transfer?

I really don't understand this. He would have been competing for the starting job, and we're not really that deep at S. Maybe he wasn't putting in the time to learn the D?? Whatever the reason, I hate that we lost him, because he was a big hitter.

I don't think this had anything to do with depth. Coach Saban said himself it was about accountability. No question that Woodson would have gotten a lot of playing time this year and probably started next year. I think this cements Kendall Kelly as a safety for this season...

Yeah, that's what I figured.
And, yes, I just saw that Kelly is slated for defense. I think it's good news for Gibson that he's staying on offense. Depending on how Nick Perry and Jarrick Williams perform in practices, I still wouldn't be shocked to see Milliner or Fulton given a shot at safety. I'm not expecting it, but wouldn't be shocked.

I wish Nick had enrolled early now. He would have benefited a lot from it.

re: Coach Saban Presser/ Woodson to transfer

Isn't Carswell the WR people have been awwing over this summer?

That came from some poster on another board that was doing alot of exaggerating. I think the whole post was a joke, but of course alot of people ran with it. People should have known something was up when the poster said that Carswell was "a foot taller than Maze."

I really don't see why people are upset with this. If Saban is publicly saying that it was an issue of accountability and that losing him isn't a problem I am not going to view it as one. We all know the effects that bad eggs can have on teams. I have full faith that Saban will have the defense ready with or without Woodson. I read an article that said Saban's LSU NC team had two freshman in the secondary. If anyone can piece together a secondary it is going to be Coach Saban.

I remember when the news about Patrick Peterson leaving Ole Miss came out someone mentioned the high percentage of MS players who end up fizzling out. This just adds another one to the list. It really does seem to be a trend with players from MS.

All the people who are confused by this and mention his playing time aren't getting it. A transfer isn't always completely voluntary. People are given the "opportunity" to resign from jobs everyday. Sometimes people resign to keep from being demoted.

I trust Coach Saban. There has to be a standard, and if that standard isn't being met then hard decisions have to be made. I respect Coach Saban for making decisions like this. No one player is greater than the team.

Well, we're looking at Mark Barron, BJ Scott, Robert Lester, Demarcus Milliner, John Fulton, DeQuan Menzie, Phelon Jones, Dre Kirkpatrick, Hunter Bush, Mark Holt, Will Lowrey, Tyler Maddox, Wesley Neighbors, Kyle Penington, Nick Perry, Jarrick Wlliams and Kendall Kelly. That's 17 D Backs now on scholarship.
(Did I leave anybody out?) I think it's a pretty impressive list.

Coach Saban wouldn't have given them scholarships if they didn't have the goods. So, I don't think that there's that much to worry about, considering their talent level and who's coaching them up. Granted there won't be a lot of game experience but I have all the confidence in the world that we'll muddle through somehow.

re: Coach Saban Presser/ Woodson to transfer

From what I have heard, there is a maturity issue with Belue. I don't mean that as a negative thing necessarily. He was enrolled in school a year early and because of that he has graduated from Deshler at the same point in life that most of us were starting our Sr. year of HS.

I also hear that he is a good kid and should do well with a little age and the maturity that comes along with age and some experiences.

I say that to say that I am not writing Belue off from ever making it to T'town and joining the team. I do sincerely hope though that his work ethic and behavior at this point don't cause him to miss the chance of a life time.

Nothing on Deion Belue?

No word on eligibility status for Sims and Belue | TuscaloosaNews.com

Efforts to reach Belue were unsuccessful. Last week one of his former coaches at Deshler, Pat Smith, said only that Belue is continuing to work toward eligibility.

Sims has been enrolled at East Mississippi Community College with the intention of leaving for Alabama if the NCAA Clearinghouse approves his eligibility in time for the fall term. His father, Sonny Sims, said he expected news on his son's eligibility Monday.
“It's supposed to be (Monday), but we'll just wait it out whenever it comes,” the elder Sims said. “I don't know how it could be bad news, because we've done everything we had to do.
Having read that, I think we'll see Sims take the last spot and Belue try to join the team whenever he becomes eligible.

From team reports last year, it was suspected by some that Woodson would be far more valuable to the team on special teams than at safety over the course of his career. Will say this about the loss... I would rather have a depletion at the safety position than at CB because many times, you can successfully teach a CB that position and his athleticism easily converts. Going the other way, it seems to be a lot harder. I'd look for the incomers to have a shot, along with both Menzie and Milliner. Also, I'd think Kirkpatrick could slide there if Menzie is completely healthy.

I really like your post gives a good perspective on the amount of bodies we have in the secondary. Although I believe Hunter Bush, Mark Holt, Will Lowrey, Tyler Maddox, and Kyle Pennington aren't scholarship players. But regardless we still have a good amount of athletes capable of playing, and more importantly with an attitude and work ethic in line with Coach Saban's standards.

I thought Woodson would be a mainstay this year. Oh well...

I wholeheartedly wish Rod all the best and hope he ends up in a situation that works out well for him and wherever he ends up.

I think you mean Patrick Patterson. Peterson plays for LSU.

You are correct. Bush, Holt, Lowery,Maddox and Pennington are walk-ons. In all likelyhood none of them will ever see the field. So we are very thin, not only in experience, but in number of bodies.
