Question: How many offensive points are acceptable against our D?

This is not a question of will we win; I believe we will. Nor is this a question to be answered as CNS; but as a Bama Fan, knowing what we do of Arky's offense, specifically the passing attack, what is the maximum number of points our D can give up and be considered acceptable based on the opponent?

Again, this is not what I/we think they will score or what we prefer the D to give up, but what's our pain threshold before we begin to worry over our D based on this one game (away) and the opponent.

Also, not talking about garbage time scores against 2nds and 3rds.

My level is 4 TDs or any combination of offensive pts not to exceed 28 - about one score a quarter.

Anything over 3 points is unacceptable IMO.
However, I think the threshold is really 21; I don't think we should ever, under any circumstances, allow anyone else to replicate what the barn did last year. :mad2:
Now, having said all that...
The way our offense can score, we won't be in trouble unless we allow more than 31, and I just don't see that happening.

I was going to go with the one less than we score answer, but someone beat me to it.

Realistically with Arkansas' offense and our young secondary, I'd say 20 would be fantastic and if they got as many as 24 I probably wouldn't be THAT concerned. Of course this is assuming we are going to score at least 31 points, probably more.

Yes. I like to pick out a minimum number of points I think our offense needs to score for us to win the game (I did a thread about it once but got so many smart aleck "one more than the other team" responses that I decided never to do it again).

I'd say our D giving up 24 points or so to this Arkansas team would not be a bad outing, especially if one of those scores comes after the game is pretty much decided. I cannot see us scoring fewer than UGA did against them.

One point less than our offense gets ;)

Seriously though, in the 44 games since Coach Saban's arrival, we've only given up 25 or more points SIX times, three of those in his first year ('07, remember our talent level on D then?).

Keeping opponents to 24 points or less 38/44 times is a pretty freaking good ratio as far as acceptable points. Obviously you'd like for your D to never give up any points, but that's pretty unlikely ;) Suffice it to say that Alabama is pretty good at avoiding offensive shootouts. I have a hard time believing that trend is going to get turned on its head anytime soon.

Arkansas only scored 24 on UGA until 15 seconds left in the game. I'd like to think our D is at least equal to UGA's. Given that the Hogs will be hyped up and at home, I could see them scoring something like 28 or 30. The good thing is, I believe our team should be good enough to score more than that on Arkansas...

Motor mouth Mel Kiper on ESPN just a little while ago picked Arkansas to beat Bama. Todd McShea(spl??) picked Bama in a close game.

Re: How many offensive points are acceptable agianst our D?

I'll be confident in saying that 17 points (2 TDs, and a Field Goal) should be the limit. But a defense led by Kirby Smart, CNS, and a Jeremy Pruitt should be able to make game-changing adjustments after 2 TDs by Arkansas. I'm not buying into the assumption that this game will be a shootout. The fact is, aside from the hype, if both teams play their best game, Alabama wins this game by 14+ points. I would like to see the Alabama youngsters on defense keep the Hogs under 10, and I think that is a good possibility. Pressure and momentum are key. And the Tide offense will provide the momentum. Running the ball and moving down the field will give the defense adequate rest in order to slow down the "air raid" that Mallet intends on unleashing. On a side note, I enjoy the X factor that the DBs have this year. It's like they're playing with something to prove. I won't predict a score just yet, but the Tide will show their true colors this game and prove in order to have a championship caliber team, Defense will be the answer. And as sobering as it is to Hogs' fans, they just don't have the defense to win this game.

I won't like it, but I have arky scoring 24-28 against us, and that's only because we've been suspect so far. I'd love to see the light come on for our defense and hold them to less.

I think when you start giving up 20-30 points per game that becomes a problem.

Off topic, but is anyone having trouble loading pages on this site? It may be my computer, but it has been slow loading for the past hour.

I'm now thinking they will score between 28-31 but we will score in the 30's.

With their passing attack, 24 would be "acceptable" but I think they are going to feed on the atmosphere and score a bit more than that.

Their scores will be big play strikes and we will have 5-6 six minute plus drives to win a close one 35-30.

Considering the amount of gnashing of teeth, whining, and being overall distraught over our defense by several posters on this board (after only giving up a total of 19 points through three games), the defense better not let them score or there will be a serious meltdown by some on here.

For me, I would think anything under 10 points would be exceptional, under 17very good, and under 24 would be ok. However, as long as we win I really do not care.

Anything 14 or under is great. Anything 21 or less is good. 30 or less is acceptable. Anything over 30 is cause for concern.

I'm expecting a good showing by our defense. This scale is for the Arky game only, by the way. South Carolina would be a bit lower, something like 10, 17, 24.

For some reason, I think South Carolina is going to present a bigger challenge than Arkansas, mainly because of their defense. If we lose to Arkansas, which would mean that Arky scored 30+, then the South Carolina game just became a toss-up. After two tough games like that, losing to Florida could become a probability instead of a possibility. I don't see that happening, but a lot of things have happened before that I didn't see coming. :)

Personally, I think we hold Arky to 17. I'd be comfortable with 24, and a little uneasy with 27 - 30. Anything over 30 and I'm scared for the rest of the season.

I have a feeling this Hog team is going to come out and play. We are not sneaking up on anyone this year. Especially the way we handled the Hogs last year, they have everything to gain and will play with nothing to lose.

I don't care about spreads, over-unders, or other stats against anyone only as long as Alabama lines up on their respective Saturday and competes to the best ability and effort to outplay the man accross from him on every down. It usually ends up a W with that mindset.

I wouldn't use the word "acceptable", but I'd like to see Bama hold them to 21 or less. I think it's very possible. Every unit on the D needs to do a really good job to keep it there, though.

Hopefully its less, but I'm going to say 17-21 pts considering Arky is pretty one-dimensional on O & I expect they'll move the ball some on us. Like it or not, they have a good passing offense and have the majority of their playmakers on that side of the ball. Plus I'm sure Petrino has some new plays here & there he'll throw out there.
However, this year I believe we actually have the better offense (very balanced) and have shown the ability to be able to score quickly or pound it out when needed. I picked Bama to win by 9 pts.:BigA:
