Alabama bowl preview | ChuckOliver.Net

Good morning and Roll Tide. Above is just a quick look at the matchup for this year's Capital One Bowl related to statistics. As you'll see, both teams are fairly even in most major catagories. Also, a look at what might provide Julio with a chance to be the difference in the game and why playing MSU could be a very good thing for the secondary.

Let me know your thoughts regarding my comments and how the statistics stack up. RTR!

who ever runs the ball the best wins this game and who ever defends against the run the best wins.

Of course our stats are against SEC opponents AUB, ARK, LSU SC MS UF .... all who are or have been in the top 25 most of the year. They beat Wisc and didn't play OS. So I think our competition has been better.

Yeah and stats for a game like this can sometimes be clouded because there aren't common opponents to compare to.

Regarding your "telling" comment, what's your thoughts?
No common opponents, but who had the tougher schedule?

Bama gives up just under 300 yards a game while MSU gains just over 400. Bama gains over 430 compared to MSU giving up a little over 330. Toss up.

Bama allows right under 180 through the air, and MSU is putting up right at 250 per game. The Tide gains over 270 in the department. MSU allows just over 200 yards a game. Adavantage Bama.

Rushing wise Bama gives up a little over 120 compared to MSU gaining just under 170. The Tide gains 175 while the Spartans give up just over 120. Close toss up.

The Tide is only giving up 14 points a game. MSU is scoring just over 30. Bama scores barely under 35 a game while MSU is allowing 20 a game. Advantage Bama.

Like I said earlier, stats DON'T decide the outcome of a game.

I have great respect for Julio Jones and our passing game, but I have a strong feeling that we will need to run the ball successfully to win this game. I also feel that our team and coaching staff are aware of that fact, and will prepare to attack MSU on the ground.

As with all of our losses, it will depend on keeping the big play from happening on defense. In each of our losses, there were at least two big plays by the other offense that turned the tide, so to speak. If our young secondary can keep MSU from those big plays, we should be in good shape.

I wouldn't draw any conclusions from the Penn State game. As I recall, Coach Saban established early on that we could score via air or ground, and could hold Penn State at bay, then shut down our offense so JoePa would not suffer a lopsided defeat.

Come to think of it though, we shut down our offense in several games this year...

So what is the difference between "toss up" and "close toss up"?

To anyone, how is Bama an 11-point favorite? I'm thinking maybe tougher competition and more speed on offense and defense; are these good assumptions?

The first one seems to be leaning towards Bama but still is a toss up. The other one is a true toss up.

I agree that we'll probably try to establish the run, but not confident that we can though. That being said, we can do damage through the air. I'm not worried about that.

The way I see it Alabama can and probably should win this game. However crossing one's fingers and expecting things to come together in the 13th game of the season is simply illogical. MSU has proven to be a better 'team' and to have competitive fortitude throughout the year, thus 11-1 against the 65th ranked schedule. Alabama on the other hand has proven to lose it's edge again and again in both victory and defeat against the 17th ranked schedule. Alabama should win this game, but with 11 points I'd be putting money on MSU... if I was the betting sort. Talent is in Alabama's favor, chemistry is in MSU's corner. Who wants this game enough to prepare for it properly will go a long way in deciding the victor. In that regard I expect MSU to be up for the game, this version of the Crimson Tide... who knows?

From a matchup standpoint MSU's MLB is fantastic. Frankly Vlachos has struggled in every competitive game this year & I think MSU has the DTs to give us fits in the middle, which USC, LSU, & Aub all did. However if Alabama is a bit more creative on O doing some things I've been waiting to see consistently all year it could easily tilt the game in our favor. More Maze in the wildcat, throwing the long ball off of a fake screen to Julio, running end arounds with Julio/Maze (4 or 5 times atleast), etc. Not big offensive changes just some things that have worked/would work based on our existing body of work this season. All of this would free up the middle of the field a bit more for Ingram/Richardson.

The more I look at the matchup the more I like our chances given SOS etc. However I just can't get past the reality of how up/down Bama has played vs how solid/consistent MSU has played. Anyway it'll be a good game so long as both teams show up motivated and have prepared that way.

Schlante & Roll Tide,
Phillip

Common opponents and stats aside, I'll say this - MSU is known to come roaring back in the second half of games. And Bama is known, amongst us fans, to let off the gas around the same time.. What will come of this?

Bama could have scored 50 against Penn St. Bama should have scored 50 against AU but.... I hope CNS will allow the team to score at will and keep playing to win until the game is no longer in doubt. I don't care about an opponent's feelings anymore. Especially when teams can score in less than a minute and a half.
