Link: Source: Florida job Kirby Smart's to turn down

At this point we've really done all we can do to keep him. I hope he stays, but if he bolts for UF I say good luck to him. The thing that worries me more than losing him as a coach is losing him as a recruiter. He has recruited well for us in Georgia.

More to the point, he's got a LOT of defensive studs lined up for the incoming class, and I'd hate to see any of them follow him to Florida.

I just don't see why in the world he would make this move? Lateral move, period.

DC under a defensive minded HC move to another defensive minded HC. Both situations, you are just the faciliator in someone else's defense. Just doesn't make sense.

I smell a rat with this offer ! Do we want to go through this every year with Kirby? At some point, you just have to say there is the door if you want out. If they are such good friends, this deal would have either been turned down or Kirby would have announced he is leaving. Being such good friends, why do think it is aired as an offer? Gimme a break.

I know all is fair in love and football, but I think it is a little disingenuous of CWM to into the conference as a HC and start raiding CNS's staff considering he put CWM in such a good position. Jimbo Fisher didnt do this when ultimately got the reins at FSU.

To me this just looks like more coat-tail riding by Muschamp. Besides he and smart are to pretty strong defensive coaches I dont see how the could get along. In that situation both are going to be going hard it at it trying to make a good impression for themselves and I think that would naturally lead to one another stepping on each other's toes.

Besides, why would Smart consider himself beneath Muschamp at this time? DC at Bama is every bit as reputable as DC at TX.

Sadly, I think Kirby is going to take the job since it has become public. I hope I am wrong but I don't think this looks good.

Yeah instead of "Saban's Defense" it will now be "Muschamp's Defense." If he wanted to create his own identity I don't see that happening under Muschamp at UF.

The other aspect to consider is gaining experience in yet another philosophy of football. If he learns a bit from Saban, then learns a bit more from the lineage of mack brown, well that cant be a bad thing. it is good to be exposed to as many different quality programs to see what works for each. so this is more than just ego and titles, this is an opportunity for him to add to his repertoire of knowledge. i dont want him to go but i can definitely see the reason why he would.

Kirby may be using this to get a better offer elsewhere as leverage. It's nothing for us to be upset about b/c that is the nature of this business and CKS should do what is best for him and his family. I think this position at UF is a lateral move (at best), but I think this info is out in the public b/c it will be used as leverage at another position.

Use a lateral position offer as leverage to get a head coaching position? I don't think Kirby needs another offer to use as leverage to get another position. He needs it to get a raise.

I don't consider Florida to be even a lateral move. I see it as a downward move.

Not from a program level perspective but from a coaching career perspective.

Why would you leave a school like Alabama where the head coach is 59 to become an assistant for an incoming guy who is 39?

It's like saying "I'd rather wait 10-20 years to become a head coach rather than four or five"..because I think Smart would certainly get a good luck at Bama when Coach Saban decides to retire.

Yes it would hurt us in recruiting in all probability, but from a coaching perspective it would be like Spurrier losing his offensive coordinator. It's simply not going to have that much of an effect.

Personally I hope he stays. I think he's done an outstanding job.

I'm also tired of rumors about him leaving every time a coaching position becomes available.

I'll shut up now before I get into smart donkey mode :)

I know this won't make sense, but I could see the reasoning that Florida would be a little different.
1. Saban is known to have somewhat of an iron fist over the program. It is likely that Muschamp would allow for more of a "Muschamp/Smart" defense than Alabama's is a "Saban/Smart" defense. This isn't only for perception, but for experience.
2. At Alabama, his defense has largely been something that he maintained. At Florida, he would gain valuable experience going to a program, and largely being responsible for taking a defense where it is, and implementing his defense - just like he would as a head coach. Starting from scratch (although no one truly starts from "scratch").
3. It would "diversity his portfolio" so to speak. If he is going to be seen as somewhat of a puppet for defensive-minded coaches, at least he will be able to say that he has succeeded at two places, just like Muschamp, Chizik, and Pelini were all able to do.

Just some thoughts. I could see where one of the three things above could be factors.

I don't see Kirby Smart taking the Florida job, unless it is simply because of friendships. Muschamp gave Smart his first break when he asked Saban to hire him. That may be one of the reasons Kirby would go. If he does there are plenty of good DC out there, like Manny Diaz who is only 35 and set school records for sacks at 33 and a record 95 tackles for loss. He cut his teeth under Mickey Andrews. So whoever goes, I think Saban is coach enough to replace them with solid talent.
