Proper etiquette for watching the game

I go a fairly large gathering of friends who come over to watch the game. The host is a Bama fan, and we have two chairs set up in front of the tv that are reserved. My wife is a Bama fan, but does not understand why I have to yell at the television (I even do it when watching a recorded game from years ago!!! Sad...I know...but it is what it is!).

The host and I will say hello to all of the others as they drive up, check the grill, obtain other beverages, and perform functions caused by the over consumption of those beverages during the commercials.

I made the mistake of going to a football party for the ut game. The host and hostess are big Bama fans. But unfortunately the hostess loves to talk. And at first it was just us two couples but then others arrived and they wanted to eat and the table was near the football watching room(the room with the big tv). There was so much talking going on I could hardly hear the game. I almost walked outside and sat in my car to listen to the game. I think part of my being ill was the fact the score was 6-6. Being the fool that I am I let my gf talk me into going to their house for the Bama/lsu game this weekend. Now mind you the hostess is a really great person, love her to death but if she so much as says ONE word during the game Im going off! Im also thinking of taking my portable tv and headphones so maybe if they see me putting them on they will get the hint.

I swear one word, just one and her and I will no longer be friends ;p

My friends for years have tried to get me to come down to our local pub. I always decline. I'm like the rest of you leave me alone. When my kids were little my wife wouldn't let the kids in the same room, as I tend to forget proper etiquette. RTR

In my old neighborhood, I'd have some football players I coach stop by and they would start asking questions like we were breaking down film of our next opponent......not the game I want to do that for.

Like the rest of you, I confess to being a poor host during Bama games. I tell my friends and family that it is a part of me that I just have a hard time controlling. My father has talked of better times, when Bama fans could watch games completely relaxed, knowing that Bama was going to win - even when they were trailing. I think that those days are back, but it will take us a while to adjust. We really don't need to sit on the edge of our couches anymore, but we are conditioned to do so.

If you're going to text me during the game, it had better be a relevant comment about the game. Like this actual text from a friend of mine during the Ole Miss game: "Trent giving that guy the stanky leg at the 15 was unbelievable".

Don't talk to me if the game is close. Feel free to talk to me if Bama is up by 21+, but expect me to still be engaged in the action until the game is over. If I'm not in the restroom during a commercial break, that's your chance to talk to me, but it had better be about the game.

Agree with all of you - when Bama football is on, I don't want to be disturbed with casual talk at all - that's why I avoid football parties. I like to watch the games with my brother, when all you might hear is a passing comment on a particular play or call, etc.

A little off-topic, but I've seen the on-going threads on TF about Bama games. My question is - how do you folks manage to read and post on these threads and still watch the games? I guess some of you are better at "multi-tasking" than I am, LOL!

do what i do and stand in front of the tv yelling the entire game. most people get tired of that and choose to watch the game somewhere else.

It's so nice to know we're "normal." I don't usually swear, but my mouth becomes loud and sailor nasty if we're upsidedown in points and I don't care who hears it. Usually I am in my own little world. My family thinks its hilarious because I can't even string the vulgarity correctly. So far this has been confined to away games when I'm home watching tv. I'm particularly worried this weekend because we'll be with friends in a skybox, some of who know me and some who don't. I know I won't be able to sit down and watch this game in a skybox, I'll be the one watching on the television. I'm thinking Xanax just in case.

Yeah, you can call me on the phone but dont expect me to answer. Thats what the answering machine is for. It can get pretty loud during the game as I turn the volume up and down to match the activity on the screen and I do vocalize loudly at times so I tend to watch most games by myself.

what i don't understand is WHY people even feel the need to call me. don't they know the game is on?

also, my family always gets together to watch the game so there's a lot of talking going on, but it's ALL about the game, the previous play, possible penalties, etc. we never get to the hear the commentators until we playback the recording on sunday morning. my fiancee's family is always making fun of me because we watch the replay of every game (assuming we win). they always ask me "why would you want to watch a game you've already seen?" they claim to be FSU fans, and I ask them to name 3 people on FSU's team. that shuts them up pretty quickly

I did that for a long time, but have a new fiance who's as big a Bama fan (and football fan in general) as I am. We watch the games together, but don't want anyone else interferring during the game.
Does she have any sisters?

Unfortunately, my hunnee is not nearly as, um, understanding...

So I have to be a little more, um, emphatic, than I normally am as to how I will be spending this Saturday evening...

My wife and son go watch the game in another room in the back of the house...with the door closed...if that tells you anything about my "game face" :) I might see them scamper to the kitchen between quarters or halftime but other than that, it's just me. I'm just not compatible to be around during the game, closest I come is posting here on game threads. I'm sure I'll have to double up on the BP medication before kickoff...

I've added another superstition to my resume' this year. We've started off several games slow and I would get irritated, get off the couch and grab the laptop and start posting on the game thread. Now I just get the laptop and get ready because I feel like we can't possibly win if I'm not on the game thread... ain't we a sad bunch? :)

I'm glad i'm not alone. I've been known to stop talking mid-sentence once the game comes back from a commercial. My best friend & I will text but it is ALWAYS about the game. My poor dog (who's named Bama) will go to thw other room and hide when we're watching on TV. Fortunately he'll be spared from my screaming and yelling Saturday since I'll be in the stadium.
