Human sexual orientation is not a conscious choice. One can choose not to act on that drive, or to act in a manner contradictory to that drive, but one cannot choose the instinctual drive.

So what '86 appears to be advocating is for homosexuals to choose to live a heterosexual lifestyle, because heterosexual marriage is what is currently defined and recognized legally in this country. This leads me to believe that, were the shoe on the other foot and homosexuality was in the majority and heterosexuality was in the minority, '86 would have no problem whatsoever living a homosexual lifestyle or being sexually abstinent.

Very interesting. :) Mental note made.

What I have never understood is the idea that civil unions aren't enough to solve this issue. This issue is not a civil rights issue imo because they are not being denied anything. To compare this to Jim Crow is absurd. Blacks were denied basic rights. Gays are not. What they dislike is the definition of marriage as it has always been viewed. That's it. Gay men cannot marry other gay men. Is that any different than heterosexual men? They can't marry men either. So what's being denied? Nothing other than the refusal of 32 states so far to redefine the word marriage to include something it never has historically. The 14th amendment was written for former slaves. That's all. Activists courts have included illegals and gay rights under this law and they should not have. The Constitution says nothing on the issue so they SHOULD let states decide it, and then pass something like a Civil Unions Rights Protection Act if gay couples move to a state that doesn't recognize gay marriage so all other visitation, insurance, inheritance, custody rights would be held intact. I can call a Ford a Chevy all day long but it just don't make it so. :)

Civil unions are not legally equivalent to marriage.

"he explained he would never be the guy he was pretending to be all the while"

I note that it contradicts your belief.
Read carefully the early part of the story. I note that he later changed his mind.

There are plenty more of these types of examples going both ways.

not what I read, I read always gay and decided to finally be honest with himself about it

I know plenty of people who have gone through the same, including multiple friends and family members that many of us knew were gay for years before they admitted to themselves

maybe a little

My wife's little cousin who is now 22 we all knew was gay from the time I met him when he was 4 years old. I watched this kid grow up and finally come halfway out (he is letting the extended family figure it out) about a year ago. He's an absolutely great kid. But you don't need gaydar to see the gay in him, he was always on the flamboyant side.

Chuckle, chuckle...you wear your conflation well. :)

Nevertheless, that is not the argument I am making. I have been fairly consistent in my posting on this matter across several threads. I simply ask myself, "What makes sense?" I see a human world that cannot sustain itself without procreation, and the simple fact is that same sex couples cannot naturally procreate. Therefore, same-sex unions do not make biological sense to me. Is this a cold-hearted perspective on my part? Yep, it probably is, but I'm okay with looking at things objectively and unemotionally.

so homosexuality is an evolutionary response to overpopulation then? Got it

There have always been gay people and we've still managed to pop out billions of us. Don't think we run the risk of running out of people anytime soon unless this gay marriage thing is really just a ruse to make it so that we that we can only gay marry in the future.

Why do you say that? Did he fit a certain stereotype?

I know an old guy like that may thought might be gay. But, he has been married to one woman for over 65 years, had 2 kids (sadly buried both) and when a couple of his lifelong friends and neighbors came out and asked him about possibly being attracted to other men, he flat out let it be known that the thought to him was disgusting. He didn't even talk to those guys for a few months. I knew a nephew of his and he would come across as gay but he has been married for close to 15 years and has a kid.
I also know a lady that has been with a couple of different women and has said that it is a thing of the past and just didn't like doing that anymore. This girl is hot and any man or woman that saw her would want to meet her. I asked her, "you just don't want to do that anymore? Turn it off like a light switch?" and her response is, "Just not in to it anymore."

Thankfully, making biological sense to you is not a criterion for legality or morality.

Simple question. Try to answer in a very short and direct manner. Even if you hate gay people to their core and think what they are doing is an abomination, why are you against gay marriage? They are not gonna stop what they are doing just cause they are single.

I know this entire thread has been about this, but I want just a short direct answer. I am opposed to it because.......

For me it's as simple as marriage is between a man and a woman. If civil unions would give gays every right as marriage I would say great. Let it happen. I just don't support gay marriage.

Next I'll say I'm a little disappointed because I thought for sure you would be responding to the below quote.
