Re: AU football player arrested last night?

I prefer not to gloat about this type of thing. In a heartbeat, it could be one of ours in this type of situation.
Uhh, no.

Our guys are under a system of programs that has things in place to intervene and educate. Substances, domesticism, academics, ad infinitum.

The last time an Alabama player got into such serious trouble that it threatened his life or the safety of others, the kid died.

However: Had Aaron Douglas originally signed with Alabama his problems would have been detected and he would have been put on a different direction. He'd be starting on the offensive line and helping Alabama defend a national championship. Instead, he signed with a program that let him do whatever the hell he wanted. There is no luck in situations like this.

We've seen this with several players, including one [not named] who had some serious substance issues the day he arrived on campus. As highly regarded as he was at the time, he still has some work to do before he steps on the field. And by all accounts, he's doing it but still has a ways to go.

The Douglass tragedy affected our staff in ways that aren't publicly known. They took that personally and a good system of detect-and-intervene has gotten even better.

I think it is unfortunate that the kid has to get paralytic drunk. A mean thought would be that he has to get that drunk to attend the Barn. I personally hope he gets some help/counseling to avoid repeat performances.

GCT, I understand your point and I know we have a system in place to intervene if a player shows any signs of heading down a troubled path. However, that doesn't stop a kid from going to a bar, getting hammered and getting behind the wheel one night. That just takes one time and I think thats what JW was referring to. One of our guys could end up in trouble like that with one bad decision.

The good news is as you said the staff has put a tremendous amount if effort and focus on being sure we never see another AD or even JK situation.

The abuse of alcohol is very common among young adults, be they in college or not.

Being belligerent to the point of coming to law enforcement's attention and/or finding your antics in the news is not very common among young adults.

This young man has more than an alcohol problem. He has a character problem.

I won't mention a name yet so I don't start a rumor, but I got a text last night from a family member that witnessed an AU player get arrested by the AU police for being passed out drunk in Toomers Corner.
It really isn't his fault. He probably saw the sight of those poor trees and was so depressed he was trying to drink away his misery.

I do not mean to be insensitive to the young man`s problems as he maybe not as bad as this appears... I also understand that maybe he has a problem and I hope that this young man can get on the right path... But, this photo of his practice attire has made me laugh harder than I have laughed for two years.... This
.... is just so wrong:conf3:
You rang???

It doesn't stop him from going to a bar (assuming he's of age; Dismukes was not) and getting hammered.

But it sure does improve the chances of him thinking it through and reaching the decision that "you know what, that's not such a good idea."

I think Staci nails it. This kid may have a substance problem but the bigger issue is his character problem.

The whole nature vs. nurture argument aside, character is not something you're born with. It's something you develop and the college years are as important to developing good character as any other time in a young man's life.

The kid had a problem during his recruitment and it continues. Chizik doesn't care as long as he gets the Recruiting Rating!:cool2:

There are actually more than a few posters on barn forums saying this exact thing. Apparently Mr. Dismukes has a reputation on campus.

Of course, those posters are the minority. The majority are saying the REC's in control of the Auburn PD.

Substance abuse and addiction by it's very nature is an emotional problem(s) that manifest itself through character defects. Step 6 of the 12 Step Program in AA (and other 12 step programs) is:

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

Does Dismukes have a substance abuse issue? Don't know. That is for him and those around him to decide (family, friends, loved ones). If he doesn't, clearly the incidents that have happened in the last few months are a strong indication that he is at least "on the edge". The main thing is for someone to step in to try help him "the human being" and not worry about football. If the boy is not already in the "addiction abyss", he soon will be. When you fall into that black hole, it is one hell of a painful climb for the individual and the family.

How do I know?

Three years ago, I sent a son off to college. Within a year he was an alcoholic and drug addict. Within 18 months, he attempted suicide and came close to death because he couldn't accept or deal with his addictions. Today he has been "clean and sober" for a little over 18 months. . He started back to college last week.

I thank God every single day that I still have him.

Hold on!! He wasn't of age?! So who was offering?
Fake ID's are a cottage industry in college towns. Most have one by the 1st or 2nd week of their freshman year. Coupled with the fact that most places don't look at them that closely, getting zonked out of your underaged mind is extremely easy.

My son's didn't even look like him. Plus it said he was 26 years old. He's 21 now and still looks like he's 17.

Absolutely, point well made, Staci. While I agree that our program has a process to help our student athletes avoid these kind of things, no program or family is immune to thiis; it is a societal problem that does not discriminate.

I could see if he were down here with me in Pensacola or in Birmingham, but he was in Auburn. They knew who he was.
