Congratulations to the University of Alabama fans for supporting student scholarships. When someone displays their University pride through the purchase of a UA car tag, approximately $50 of the purchase price goes to student scholarships through the National Alumni Association. Each year the NAA takes the money raised from tag sales and puts it in a fund to match endowed scholarship money submitted by local alumni chapters. It makes it entirely possible for the $50 donated for each UA tag purchased EACH YEAR to become $100 towards student scholarships! After the endowed scholarship has been created, the money in the ednowed fund continues to grow for future scholarships for new students to attend the University. We should all be proud that the University of Alabama National Alumni Association awards more money in student scholarships than any other alumni association in the country. You can understand now why Dr. Witt said paying CNS the $4 million + per year was a "sound business decision". Not only as CNS won National Championships but he has helped create an alumni/fanbase that will provide future alumni scholarships for students who aren't even born yet!
Whether you are a fan, supporter, or alumni you can join the local alumni chapter and the NAA which supports your University. Join both! Buy UA car tags and show your pride.! You will enjoy getting involved and it provides scholarship money for all students.
Here is the press release:

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama collegiate license tag program raised some $4.1 million during the 2012 fiscal year.
Funds raised through the statewide program are used for scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students.
The UA National Alumni Association raised a total of $4,140,319 through the car tag program in the 2012 fiscal year, the most of any college or university in the state.
Some 97,412 UA car tags were sold in the 2012 fiscal year, or 49 percent of all collegiate tags sold in the state. Auburn came in second, selling some 62,348 collegiate tags in the same fiscal year (31 percent of the total sold). Statewide, collegiate tags raise approximately $8 million for 26 colleges and universities.
“We are grateful and fortunate that this popular program has continued to grow,” said Calvin Brown, director of UA Alumni Affairs. “The license tag program is a wonderful opportunity to show allegiance to the University while supporting scholarships for current students. We sincerely thank our alumni, fans and friends for their remarkable support.”
Tags are available at local county license offices. Both numbered and personalized tags are available; the cost is $50 above the normal tag cost. Collegiate tags may be purchased at any time, regardless of an individual’s tag renewal month.
The UA National Alumni Association is made up of more than 33,000 active alumni and friends of the University organized into more than 100 local chapters nationwide. The association stimulates interest in and supports the betterment of the University and awards academic scholarships every year.

If you live out of state http://alumni.ua.edu/Out-State-Collegiate-Tags

it will specify whether any money would go back to the university.

For instance Georgia fee distribution for UA tag (alum):

Initial cost: $80 plus applicable ad valorem tax.

Cost to renew annually: $55.00 plus applicable ad valorem tax.

Of the Initial $80 fees collected for the issuance of these tags, the fees shall be distributed as follows:

$20 Annual License Reg. Fee

$1 to the County Tag Agent

$59 to State of Georgia General Treasury

Annual Renewal:

$20 Annual License Reg. Fee

$35 to State of Georgia General Treasury

As someone pointed out, not all states provide donations for UA tags from tag sales. However all the money recieved by the National Alumni Association for tag sales, is used for matching endowed scholarships from any alumni chapter regardless of where it is located -including those from out of the state of Alabama.
