Question: Can someone explain, or try to explain the recent obsession with tattoos?

  • Hi Guest, we are working on updating the site servers and software. We're also 'forcing' everyone to read and agree to our site privacy policy and terms of service. There are no significant changes to either of these but the terms page does clarify a few things that are mostly in the legalese. You can just click the checkbox for both and continue using the site as usual! We'll update you more on the site upgrades VERY soon! THANK YOU AS ALWAYS for supporting the site and being an active participant!

Wish I could explain it. Mostly, I just laugh at it, about like everything else. Heavily tattooed is just freaking nasty. Disgusting. Dirty. I don't think I could ever play organized sports in this day and age because I don't want that crap touching me. But if you wanna look that way, go on ahead with your bad self. I look at somebody like Jesse Williams, and I understand the heritage, culture, etc., and just shake my head. He looks like a clown.

Carry on.
This is painting with a broad brush but it seems those who get tats (multiple tats specifically) are also those type of people who crave attention.

The alpha male in the group of guys who always has to do or say something to established some sort of perceived "dominance". To ensure everybody knows he's Mr. Billy Joe Bad Britches. Or the person who puts every thought and emotion that goes through their body and mind on facebook. Again, painting with a broad brush but it seems it is a "look at me" type thing.

nothing like a tattoo to say "Hi, I make really bad decisions."

I don't have a problem with tattoos in moderation. It seems many people can't stop at one or two, though. If you do have them, they should represent something that is dear to you. I've met too many people who said "well, it looks cool" with no higher meaning. I've never gotten any, because I get bored with temporary tattoos.

You want the layman's explanation or the psychoanalytic interpretation?

No. You don't want the analytic interpretation. Think phallic object piercing another object. Over and over. And over again.
