There's a segment on Nova on PBS on eating - "Can I eat that?" The narrator is working with a UA scientist named "Secor." It's on cooking and the fact that the invention of cooking allowed homo sapiens to dominate the world. Anyway, he's enjoying ribs, where else? :D I'll move this later and admins are exempt from the teaser rule... :)

My favorite ribs on the planet. I travel extensively with my job and have tried to find better ribs all over the southeast, but Dreamland is still my very favorite. I can tell you a hundred places NOT to eat BBQ or ribs, but good BBQ is very hard to find.

I know that BBQ and ribs are subjective and everyone has different tastes, but to me, I've never eaten better.

It was good PR for UA, and it was interesting. They fed a python a raw rat and a cooked rat. The snake got 12% more energy out of the cooked rodent...

I saw that Nova episode, too. It was really interesting and got better when they dropped in to Dreamland. I was yelling at may son to come quick. I was pleasantly surprised at the PR that University got out of it, too. The research, not my cup of tea, was none the less interesting.

Not uncommon. Cooking changes the proteins so that they are more bioavailable. Egg protein is that way too, for example, You get twice the protein from a cooked egg as opposed to a raw egg.

Dreamland's is a bit over rated to me. The Orginal Archibalds' ribs are very good, but Saw's in Homewood is THE BEST and most consistent. They are slow smoked, not quick grilled like Dreamland's. Get there early for lunch, they go fast! If a place can quickly make more, they aren't done right.

I used to bodybuild as a younger man and after seeing the original "Rocky" movie, I did the raw egg thing for a few weeks. I'd crack 2 -3 eggs into a glass, gulp them down and chase with orange juice. Did it one too many times and wound up with salmonella poisoning. That whole experience was not very fun at all. Needless to say, I haven't downed a raw egg in many a year since.

They don't do ribs but the best Barbeque sandwich I've ever eaten is Leo and Susie's World Famous Green Top Barbeque on the Walker-Jefferson County line. I ate six one night and could have eaten more! I have it over nighted in for our games at times. Delicious..and the coldest beer anywhere.

They had a pretty good softball team in the 80's

I'm a BBQ freak. Dreamland is way over rated.

Archibalds may be the best. Love their sauce. Have done a taste test side by side with dreamland sauce and even though I like dreamlands sauce it tasted like water next to archibalds.

Saws homewood and soul kitchen are top notch. Not only is their BBQ top notch but their sides are amazing. And their sauce is out of this world. Saws owner Wilson really has changed BBQ for bham, he is an amazing chef. They are opening a new spot this week where open door used to be. I highly recommend going by their Avondale location and having their plate that is cheese grits topped with greens topped with pulled pork topped with sauce and then fried onions.

Ate at green top week before last, it was ok. Sauce was ketchup heavy. Fat was not rendered properly. Tea had a metallic mineral water taste. Slaw, fries and service were great.

Original Full Moon on 6th is good. You have to go right after lunch and get sliced pork sandwich outside or mixed with extra chow chow. The chow chow helps to balance out the sweetness in their sauce. Sides are really good and fresh and I would jump in a pool of their tea!

Recently I've been on a golden rule irondale kick. Sliced pork with thier spicy sauce topped with slaw. Their sides are ok. Their service is terrible.

I've been meaning to go to bob gibsons. The wife and I drove up there after the tornados went through Tuscaloosa and they were closed. I can talk all day about BBQ. I've thought about writing a book on alabama BBQ.

Saw's is - hands down - the best in Birmingham. Both locations are amazing.

Green Top is hit or miss. Brilliant when it's on its game.

Dreamland is a shell of its former shelf.

Need to get back up to Top Hat one night soon for catfish and pulled pork.
