Oregon over Oklahoma please (NOPE!)

Re: Oregon over Oklahoma please

If they cared about that we would have never EVER have given the Big Least/AAC an AQ status after the big boys bailed. Remember UCONN in the Fiesta bowl? And that wasn't a Final Four site in Tempe. You think they are stoked about UCF. They can wipe their rears with this rule.

Well, automatic bids and other qualification rules force a lot of choices. 5d exists so they can manipulate the selections where there is choice or move the picks around so, for example, Alabama is selected to the Sugar instead of the Orange.

Re: Oregon over Oklahoma please

Am I the only one though that believes Oklahoma would give us a better game perhaps than Oregon?

Oklahoma isn't a bad team. They have the capability of beating Alabama in a one-game scenario. The reality is that - at this point - that playing Oregon is a way to turn lemons into lemonade as far as this season goes. It has an intriguing factor as a "preseason national title" game and the fact that Oregon fans wanted this as a referendum on their philosophy since August. As bad as their defense was against the run down the stretch, the game could be an Alabama blow out. Still, I think we would get the best effort out of both teams by bringing this long desired cross-sectional matchup together.

The Oklahoma game is yet another example of the BCS setting up a game where one team has more to lose than gain. It is a bigger game for Oklahoma than Alabama and there is an inequitable balance of stakes. After the "we want bama" mess, this game does take on something that is actually meaningful to Alabama.

Re: Oregon over Oklahoma please

Playing Oklahoma would be just as boring as playing Utah was. For many teams, the bowl system is a great way to end the season on a high-note. But for this squad, that had every opportunity to beat Auburn and no doubt cruise past that pitiful Mizzou squad, the bowl is a sorry parting gift. I'm sorry to say that. I will still watch the game and pull for the Tide, but I think it's a fact that this game is meaningless for the Tide. Win and the trophy will collect dust in the shadow of the crystal balls, lose and you're nationally humiliated. I don't consider 11-1 a failure, but the bowl doesn't have any impact on my opinion of this team's season. 12-1 or 11-2 holds no importance to me.

Not trying to slam you but you must either be young or a recent Bama fan. I always hope for perfection but am happy with a winning season. Hoping you don't have to experience any 5-6 win seasons anytime soon but I guess you'd just hop to the next sensational team out there.

Re: Oregon over Oklahoma please

I agree that Bama/Oregon at this moment in time is a more compelling matchup nationally and in contrast of playing style, but the SBC will not base their decision on that. They will go with Bama/OU primarily because they believe that it will sell more tickets and create a bigger economic impact on the venue, which in all likelihood it will. Oklahoma fans will travel better than Oregon fans will to New Orleans and of course they know how well Bama people follow our team on bowl excursions. Also, of course, from a tradition standpoint you really cannot get a better matchup, with possibly the lone exception of last yr's Bama/ND game. Get ready to hear how Bama and OU have 22 combined NC's a lot over the next month.

Re: Oregon over Oklahoma please

I guess the Sugar Bowl committee will pick OU.
Back in the day, we'd be playing whoever Coach Bryant told them to invite.

Re: Oregon over Oklahoma please

Both teams have already lost twice, so probably neither team belongs in a BCS game. Given that, I'd rather play the Sooners and their longstanding tradition vs. the johnny-come-lately Ducks. Five or so years ago they were a nobody, 5 or so years from now they will return to their former status.

Bcs bowl wins are a big deal. Beating another major national program in a bowl is a big deal. Finishing 1, 1, and 2 the last three years would be a big deal. I'm very excited for whoever we play and realize it's a great opportunity to show what bama is made of.

Re: Oregon over Oklahoma please

If I can't play for number 1, then I'd like to at least have some sort of "traditional powerhouse" game! Besides, I despise the Sooner Schooner more than Donald Duck!

You may want to read yor post, I can't believe you feel that way if you are a Bama fan.

CPB went thru a time that he had trouble with bowls lost 7 or 8 in a row, every game matters that is what CNS has been trying to teach these kids every year.

Re: Oregon over Oklahoma please

I, too, am fine with playing the Sooners. Will be a lot of tradition on that field. If we were to face the Ducks, I would be fine with that, too. More than anything, I am interested to see how this team responds when they take the field. Will it be lethargic like the when we played Utah, or will they play angry with something to prove?

Re: Oregon over Oklahoma please

With their history in the Orange Bowl, you would think that they would put them in Miami.
OU v. UCF in Miami
Clemson v. Baylor in Tempe
Bama v. Ohio St in New Orleans
Stanford v. Michigan St in Pasadena

Just my thought...

Re: Oregon over Oklahoma please

It sucks but this decision by the SBC basically comes down to the fact that people who are old enough to remember the 1970s OU v. Alabama debates are the same people who are old enough to accumulate the wealth to have discretionary spending for a big bowl trip where they'll throw a lot of cash around in NOLA.

This game will clearly mean more to OU than Alabama. I don't like those games. Even exhibition games can create some measure of stakes between the opponent. The Rose Bowl has the midwest v. pacific coast rivalry. At least this game could be a rare Pac-12 v. SEC cross-sectional matchup and a chance for Oregon to back up their "WE WANT BAMA" talk. It has meaning...Oregon fans stated their call-out and I think our team would respond. They're not going to respond to playing a team who got hosed by a Texas squad that was destroyed by BYU and Ole Miss.

My issue is that tradition doesn't suit up and play on the field. I'd rather face the guys wearing the Oregon jerseys.

I am also interested to see how we play. Will it be a Utah or Michigan St. scenario. I think the way we practiced hard and smashed Michigan St. after the 2010 season really helped set-up our run to the 2011 title. Wow, that 2011 defense was really special. Sorry, but I am afraid that even the SEC is starting to favor the high-scoring no defense brand of football, so I really hold on to those special defensive teams. The 1992 and 2011 defenses were the two best that I have ever seen. I really wish we hadn't choked away that LSU game in 2011 because it would be an even better memory if we hadn't lost a game.

If you read the tweets from the players.."I pity da fool!"

While I do understand that Oklahoma has normally looked terrible in big games lately, I wonder why you think the guys in the Oregon jerseys are any better. Any time Oregon plays a team with any semblance of a defense and/or physical presence they seem to lose. If we play like we are capable of playing, we should beat either OU or Oregon by more than two scores. However, we still haven't played to our capabilities for an entire game this year, so either team is also very capable of beating us. Personally, I would rather play OU since Big Mouth Bob kept running his pie-hole about the SEC this year.

Like Michigan State?
