Looking at the big picture there's no way Saban's THE ONLY way we succeed and win championships. You do realize he will ultimately leave? So does that mean we're doomed for football eternity? I hope not. There is and will be a lot of very good coaches who can win at Bama. The most recent example Saban leaving a program is Les Miles. As goofy as that joker is look what kind of winning % he's thrown down since being there. I would think we could find someone AT LEAST as good as Miles to take over once Saban left. When Saban leaves the program won't be in the same kind of shape it was when he took over. It (more than likely) will be very strong and with the hire of a good coach we should be able to continue being a force in the conference and in college football in general.

You're correct… most of us here probably can't understand why folks would invest in ventures such as that, but it's common among people like Saban and especially among CF coaches from what I understand. A lot of it probably has to do with the people you are mingling with as the head man - boosters with deep pockets who will give you an "opportunity" to get in at ground level. The risks are great, but as you said, the gains can be tremendous.

First, I don't think CNS is going anywhere. I don't know what all is going on with the contract renegotiation but at the end of the day I just can't see him leaving what he has built behind to start all over again. Second, if he did leave there are other good coaches that are hard workers that could be very successful at UA. Also, I'm not naming any names but I'm not crazy about some of our assistant coaches so I'm not convinced that we have "best of the best" coaching staff. Some of them are known more for their recruiting than their coaching ability. Just my opinion, others may disagree and that is fine.

I agree to a point. IF the coaching staff were to remain mostly intact especially with the key positions, it would be a heck of a lot better situation than the '80s. But that is a huge IF. Actually sorry I brought this up because it is nothing more than far reached specualtion and honestly I don't think we are going to have to worry about it. RTR

Me either - but I still think we face it 3-5 years down the road. Best case to me right now is to lock him down for however long he wants to coach and make sure we have a plan (I know - a bit easier to do in the corporate world than in CFB)

I just get sick of all the media love for Texas. When were they last relevant? When was the Big 12 last relevant? What makes Austin the de facto best job in the country? Sure, they have deep pockets and some tradition, but when last I checked, Alabama ain't exactly the Target brand of college football and I'll compare our tradition with theirs any day. Can we say three times their national title count? Can we say Georgia and Tennessee also have more titles than Texas? Additionally, if a coach wants total control, Texas is one of the LAST places I'd be looking for a job.

Could Coach Saban turn Texas into a title contender before he's reached retirement age? Sure. What really does that secure for his legacy though? Is the possibility of winning a title at three schools enough to offset the hit to his reputation for going back on his word? If he goes, I'll be sorely disappointed, but I think we'd be in good hands with Coach Smart.

I still contend: I believe Coach Saban to be true to his word until I see otherwise. I honestly don't think the Texas job is as big a lure for the head coach at Alabama as people think. I think he has all the power and can have all the money he wants staying with us. He can secure his legacy as one of the greatest coaches of all time with us. He has all the challenge he needs staying in the SEC which, frankly, is a much more challenging environment than he'd ever get in the Big 12.

Personally, I'll just be glad to see this nonsense behind us.

I don't know what's going on, but I was just in the car and heard Brando say that Brown had a press conference not long ago and said he had NOT stepped down and praised Pres. Powers. So the plot thickens...

They've just got a ton of money. That's really it. It's just my opinion, but I believe they have such little historic success (beyond dominating their little sandbox) because of the arrogance that money creates. The sense of entitlement. Still, that money is legit and they'll always be a threat because of it.

I also believe when evaluating jobs people look at more than just the program's accolades. I think the lifestyle of the city, the quality of the city and stuff like that also plays a big role in it. Austin is considered to be "happening" place and is viewed from a pop culture standpoint much higher on the food chain that Tuscaloosa. The University of Texas has an ungodly amount of money and resources at its disposal. It could recruit its state alone and still have some of the best talent in the country. Granted there are pro's and cons to coaching at any university but overall UT is a great place to be.

Does anyone really think Harbaugh would consider a move? I always thought of the Harbaugh boys as more "NFL guys." I have seen the list floating around and their are a few names I would think are untouchable. I guess enough money could change someones mind.

Don't get me wrong. I get that it's one of the top jobs in the country. I get that they *could* pay a lot of money to a coach. Maybe they have deep enough pockets and the desire to make sure they are able to win a bidding war. However, look at the current pay scale, level of success, quality of competition, history, number of titles, level of control, etc. All those factors currently point at Alabama being the better job. The only factors in Texas' favor are (potentially) deeper pockets, easier competition, and more fertile home state recruiting. Given that Coach Saban can recruit as he pleases now and given that competition is what motivates him, I just don't see that it's as compelling a change as some of the media would seem to believe.

Look, I know Austin is a great city, but I doubt Coach Saban is going to spend his time hitting up the Austin night life. When last I checked, he's got some pretty choice digs and facilities.

You think? FSU has been pretty big time too over the past 30 years. I guess the Big 12 is a step up over the ACC...maybe
