I'm not suggesting wholesale reinvention per se. As I said, I have no idea what those changes should or will look like. What I am saying is that Paul Bryant made significant changes to keep Bama in glory. Nick Saban will do likewise.
Gotcha. But I'm guessing most big changes will be personnel. We were so soft in pass coverage all year because we couldn't man up. Even when we did tonight the kid threw his best passes at the biggest moments. A hot QB can make any defense look bad.

Well, the changes are pretty big in my opinion. Stop taking 260-270 DEs and making into 300lb NFL DTs in two years. Keep a few 0-tech NTs around but mostly base in a 43 1-gap defense. Focus on doing a couple of coverages in the back end really well and stick with them. Tempo is going to keep you base anyway, so be really good at being base. No more behemoth DEs never closing in on QBs rolling out...get some fast guys with closing speed out there. Use very few subpackages. Build the starting personnel to be able to execute almost everything you do.

Really, take a look at what Michigan State has done. They're simple but strong against the run and pass. They've improved their edge rush immensely since we played them in the CapOne.

I agree with the point that Blackledge was trying to make about one of our 300 pound defensive lineman attempting to "contain" the OU quarterback on that TD throw. We're just not fast or athletic enough on our DL, and we have no pass rusher. It's why we struggle against mobile QB's. But I don't see the philosophy changing. Especially not when I just watched the High School All-American practices and they talked at length about how hot and heavy Bama was after 3 nose tackles, as opposed to pass rushers.

It was a tough one, but we are recruiting very well and CNS will make the changes that need to be made. I don't think he likes to lose any more than we do right? This team made TO's more than the other teams in the past and that did not help matters. We find a QB and we will be right there again next year!

Truth to tell, our CB situation (and safety) was just one bandaid after another this season. I wouldn't be surprised to see a wholesale change of faces next year at corner. I just hope that Vinnie comes back. He graduates and, if he wants, he could transfer and play his last season with his dad at FSU. Not that he will; I'm just pointing out the obvious...
Yeah. I'm really hoping the CNS scheme "clicks" for some guys at CB in year 2 like it has for others in the past. Vinnie back will help offset some of the youth. Belue was a decent CB for us when he was healthy, but we just missed having the shutdown guy we were accustomed to the last few years. With our issues, I'm afraid WVU will be a serious test on the front end of our schedule next year.

Cyko was at a disadvantage due to how wide the DE was split out. We probably should have ran some draws, or something that way to force them to bring him in closer. Look this Sunday at how wide the DE plays from the LT. I can assure you it will not be that wide. Cyko will do well on the next lvl he should have had some help. Next year we will have an increased focus on the run. With AJ being a senior and having earned the trust of the coaching staff I think we fell in love with the run. If Simms plays next year I can assure you we will be a hard nose make you quit team again. Just a question did we miss Jeremy Pruitt this year? I think his value to the program has been vastly under valued looking at the type of success he is having running our D at Florida State. Bottom line I am proud of the effort our guys gave tonight. We lost but we played hard so nothing to be ashamed of.

Maybe not, but I don't think there's a thing wrong with looking at your team and reminding them what it means to wear that Crimson jersey and to think about where they stand historically. That doesn't happen, and again, most of the time I can't argue with the results. But seeing as how we just lost two games to two teams that do a stellar job of getting their players to understand the history of their programs (inflated or not is irrelevant), it's something that comes to mind.
I'm not at all team meetings, practices, pregame, halftime, etc; so I can't say for a fact that it is or is not ever mentioned to our team. I'll have to take your word for it. Sounds like you're close to the team with knowledge of what's going on.

That may be the case, and I'd wager it is given the lack of freshman participation, but that's also a convenient way to deflect criticism of the coaching. Now I mean that from a fan's perspective, but still.
Now, Prof, correct me if I am mistaken, but I think we have played a significant number of freshmen this year, have we not? And we have quite a stable of rising RS Freshmen that will be ready for some snot bubble smack downs next year due to disciplined forbearance on wastefully burning eligibility on a single game in mid-season, say, GA State, etc..

I agree with you. Look at the games where we've lost or had trouble. There is a pattern, and it's not hard to figure out. Throw in Saban's rather embarrassing (in my opinion) attempts to sway public opinion about the HUNH, and the issue is blindingly obvious.

And I really worry that Hand is going to get into our program and turn into another Pagan instead of them working on conditioning and optimizing his current body make up.

Wide-9 shouldn't dominate a team as bad as it did tonight...it is an overaggressive approach and prone to exploits that we rarely took advantage of all night.

As I noted in a previous post, I'm basing that in part on recent interviews by Jay Barker and Barrett Jones, and anyone in the Birmingham area who has listened to local talk radio has heard this point a lot lately - indeed, it's why Barrett Jones was asked the question.

And his answer was not very reassuring.

I fully agree. And you know what simply ate my grits tonight? I saw repeatedly the hotdog stabs at interceptions that whiffed over and over again, resulting in a big gainer for OU when they caught the ball. PLEASE just go for the deflection, Mister!!! If the pick opportunity is clear, then fine. But above all, make sure you have your man covered well, first!!! I saw that so much it made my teeth itch and my hair hurt.

I think the main thing about the game tonight not enough pressure on the qb and we aren't strong at corner, solve those problems and use Henry More we will be okay.

Lord, I hope not. It may be time to look at some of the tactics of the Stanford S&C coach...

That had nothing to do with tonight. The HUNH has reduced Saban's defense to grasping at straws and swatting at gnats. Anyone who watched the Iron Bowl and Auburn's offense then watched the OU offense tonight would have had to be dumb and blind to not see they took a lot of pages from Malzahn's playbook. I've watched OU several times this season and their offense has never looked like that at any point this season.

The reality of it is the HUNH has decoded and stripped down defenses like Saban's and if he doesn't change we will continue to see what we saw tonight and in the IB from a defensive perspective.
I'm not talking about the reason for this loss. I agree with your post.

I just mean in general for the year.

I'd love to see our big guys loose a few pounds, or more, and get a step faster.
That's a temporary fix for recruiting guys who are a little smaller, but faster.
IMO: WE NEED A PASS RUSHER, WITH A KILLER INSTINCT.

Listened to Eli and CNS. Coach said we concentrated on containing a mobile QB, and played soft coverage. Instead, he played the game of his young career, and made us look foolish.

Also, pretty much everyone in the DB was banged up. Said a lot of young players got to see action. It isn't an excuse, but that is reality.

OK, having said all of that..................the same 3 "gotchas", we saw over and over, got us again:

1.) Could not get off the field, on critical 3rd downs. Too many times we let teams off the hook, and it burned us.
2.) We can't convert on 3rd and short. Sometimes, we move backwards. That is not supposed to happen, yet it did. Many times.
3.) TURNOVERS IN THE RED ZONE! Think how many points we left on the field, not to mention the swing in momentum.

And how we rack up over 500 yards, on offense, and play so poorly, at the same time, boggles the imagination.

But, as disappointed as we are, at least our butts will not be raw, come 1/8-9, when CNS meets with the players, one at a time. Some may want to declare, just to avoid the heat!

Looking forward to next year. The last several games we have not played like we wanted to win. Our team also has not been coached well enough to win against more determined opponents. The best thing about the past sometimes is that it has passed.
