Re: Rumph to Texas

Oh come on. Saban runs the ship, not Orgeron or Kiffin. If he doesn't want cheating, there won't be cheating.

I understand that mindset, I tend to agree.

I can't help but remember we had a coach fired around the start of the season for handing a player a little cash.

There's a difference between saying cheating won't occur under Saban because he doesn't allow it, and knowing from example that when that happens he will fire the coach.

I don't intend this as criticism of Saban, he was right to fire the coach. But I understand Saban is human and can't control everything everybody under him does.

Re: Rumph to Texas

According to a few other sites, Rumph had interviewed for USC job with Sark, before getting job at Texas. If that is true, this wasn't an all of a sudden thing, and might have some bearing Kevin Steele's decision not to leave to Louisville. Andrew Gribbles pointed out that Thompson had coached DL previously and that Steele coaches LB's. AFAIK, that is just speculation on his part, but who knows.

IIRC Thompson coached the defensive line in his first stint in Tuscaloosa, I believe that was during the Dubose era.

Re: Rumph to Texas

it sure is nice that we have something to discuss, rather than the two big defeats. i love the kiffin hire. here in tenn, it was as big a slap in the face of tennessee as any happening i can remember. i bet he wont be on the sidelines when we play at tenn. they will probably have a squad of state troopers guarding his area. even so, i believe he will make our offense much stronger, and more imagination in plays. i remember his use of backs in screens, tight ends a lot of 3d passes for completions. we have the talent to make him successful, and bama. i really dont know what the reason for rumph taking the texas job unless they are giving him more money, and they do need improvement on the defense. i do find it interesting that mr. steele, changed his mind on a def coord job. maybe he misses coaching and wants to help out our development of the def line. we shall see. lots to discuss be fore signing day.

Re: Rumph to Texas

I wish him well. He is a great recruiter, but the DL overall has not played as well under him. Not sure if it was coaching or personnel, probably both.

I understand the recruiting aspect but if the coach can't develop the talent once they are recruited then the "great recruiter" aspect of it is meaningless.

Re: Rumph to Texas

I don't know. I think he may be looking for a fresh start, although if he did come I don't see him staying past this season. Outstanding dl coach, and heck of a recruiter.
Ogeron is an excellent DL coach. I just don't see him coming here for position coach's pay. He's been a HC, coordinator, and most recently an interim HC, it would surprise me if he took that big of a demotion.

Re: Rumph to Texas

I'll say it again since it worked last time--I hope we hire Orgeron just to irritate some of you.

Honestly I like the hire and I honestly hope you are right again;)

This hire would make sure we are in play for every top D-Lineman that comes along. This would be huge in terms of play and recruiting.

Re: Rumph to Texas

Does anyone else feel like we are living in the middle of football Bizarro world? These hirings make perfect sense on paper, but Lawd Have Mercy they are interesting! LOL!

Saban will have effectively trolled the entire football universe while hiring two of the best coaches in college football in their respective positions.
