I think he is done with penalty in the Fall. There are some names out there that are good. Steve Prohm (Long term Contract), Buzz Williams, David Arseneault (Personal Favorite and his offense (The System) would fill Coleman every night!), Rob Jeter, Scott Sutton, Tim Cluess, Mark Few (Like him also!) and a few others. IMO, we will not get a "Major".

To me it really doesn't matter. All coaches pretty much know the same X's and O's, when to call timeouts, etc.... It's more in teaching, developing, and the willingness to change your "philosophy" when your philosophy isn't working. (Flexibility).
This was my point when someone brings up, "Well who are we gonna get to replace him?" We are not gonna get a major name such as Izzo or someone like that. I would take about any of the above mentioned over what we have now. I feel like the longer we let the degrading of the program continue the harder it will be for the next coach to turn it around.

I know this much. Bruce Pearl made the biggest impact on the SEC that I can remember in years outside of Donavan and a Caliprari.

I loved the way his teams played and the excitement he brought to UT basketball, which was a great accomplishment considering the stature of UT women's bball.

I know he's got baggage and NCAA history, but he could make basketball exciting once again!

One post said that the buyout only drops by 1 million every year after 2014. If that's true, does that extra 1 mil make that much of a difference. Would that be enough to give him another year?

Cglaze, this is a very good point and one I have discussed with some other fans as well. I do not believe the 1 million in the grand scheme of things will be a big deciding factor in determining his future past this year. I personally do not believe it is a monumental amount in the big picture as far as cutting ties and moving on. I actually believe that the decision to do so is much more likely than a lot of people believe. Starting over is not always easy but sometimes necessary to get back to where you want to be. Of course this is one fans opinion but in a nutshell I agree with your post and see the same circumstances or consideration involving the buyout that you raised in your post.

I know Ricky Tarrant is transferring. He's from my hometown and played pretty well. I'm saddened to say I don't recall who the other transfer is. Is he a post player ? Without some front court depth, next year will be ugly as well. That to me is the danger of giving him another year. How will the roster be any better next year ? We are asking a lot of 3 freshmen to assume major roles. Tarrant can sorta assume TR's spot, but how do we get any rebounds ?

If you mean transfers IN , you may be thinking of Micheal Kessens. 6'9" and approx 210 pounds, Came from a smaller college in Virgina(?). Sitting this year due to transfer.

Cecil Hurt says there is zero chance Pearl ends up at Bama. He even went as far as to say that there is zero chance Grant is gone after this season. Is he just being tight lipped?

I doubt Cecil is wrong. He is very candid.

Cecil won't hardly acknowledge sunrise until he sees it first. I think you can pretty much take this to the bank,

I couldn't get him to expand on his zero chance. Whether it was zero chance of Pearl or zero chance that Grant is replaced. Sometimes he is hard to read.

Yep. Cecil knows.

I fear we'll become a major laughing stock if we don't make a move.

At this point, we'll just have to see how the season pans out. Tonight's game against UT is HUGE. I feel like if we can win this game, we'll actually win a few more home games. However, if we lose this game, I could easily see losing the team and then the wins will be few and far between.

Ultimately, if that happens, I think a lot of minds will change about the future of this program. For the time being, let's continue to try and scratch out a few victories here and there and see where we go.

I can see giving Grant an extra year to see what we can do with Ricky and Michael (btw, I saw some say prior to the season he'll be a really good player).

However, I fear that extra season may give us a season like 2012 where we sneak into the tournament and saves Grant's job to only have a repeat of the last few seasons.

I wonder if this is due to Battle's knowledge of Pearl at UT? Maybe bad blood between the two?

Could be, I'm about ready to quit trying to figure this out. I just cant stand another season of SEC basketball cellar dwelling. And I'm affraid thats where we are headed.

Good post LD, and thanks for the suggestion of names that we could pursue if necessary.

I will say that I don't think there is any scenario where Buzz or Few would leave their current jobs for us. Few especially has a goldmine with the Zags. I love Few. I think he is the most underrated coach in the country when you consider the amount of talent he has produced at Gonzaga. However, he's in a weak conference and he basically has full recruiting rights to get whatever prospect he wants in in the northwest. Plus the northwest is home for him since he is from and went to college in Oregon. I highly doubt that Few would leave a perennial powerhouse where he is guaranteed a yearly tournament berth to come to the a mid-level SEC team that he would have to rebuild from the ground up. I'd give anything to see us pursue him and make him an offer that he can't refuse, however I feel pretty confident that it would never happen.

Prohm would be an interesting hire. He's young enough to build a program, he's had a fair amount of success with Murray State, and he seems to have a good style of play. It would especially be interesting since he is a Bama alum. However, things didn't end particularly well last time we hired a Bama alumni from Murray St, so I'd be interested to see if that played a factor into our interest of him.

I honestly think that the key is to somehow recruit a true inside legitimate offensive threat that teams have to pay attention to. That would help our perimeter game immensely.
Of course it's Coach Grant's responsibility to recruit such a player(s), and thus far, that's the one area where he has had basically little or no real success. There's got to be another Erwin Dudley or Antonio McDyess somewhere out there. If we can find one or two of those and actually get them to Tuscaloosa then our guards will have it much easier on the perimeter.
Tonight, I'm afraid, will be a glaring testimonial to how weak we are inside. From a match up stand point, Tennessee may have more of an advantage against us than any team we'll face.
They're huge under the bucket. I'll pull for us though and we'll just see. sip
