This lovely rain event of the past couple of days laid waste to a lot of areas in and around Pensacola, FL, overnight. The steady thunder storming began yesterday afternoon around 4:30pm here and since then has dumped around 20" (give or take a couple) on us. I was awakened around 3:40am by a powerful boom of thunder and checked the radar and facebook only to see that a lady we know in our neighborhood had posted that the water was nearly inside her house. I checked our back yard (backs up to a pond that's a water feature on the golf course) and the pond was out of its banks. Got dressed and the husband and I checked the front yard to find the water at the door.
Knowing we had just a short amount of time, we got as much furniture and belongings up off the floor as possible, turned off the breakers (we have some floor and low wall outlets), woke the girls and waited. The water started coming in right around 4am. By 6am, we noticed it was receding a little. By 6:30am, we were all pushing water out of the house (brooms, squeegees, you name it!). We got about 8" in the garage, between 2-3" inside the house, and about 4" in the Florida room. Took video and pictures for the insurance.
So, now I'm taking a little break because it's not even 10am and my hands already have blisters, my feet are sore from the wetness, and my back hurts. BUT in the grand scheme of things, this is NOTHING compared to our Katrina damage. This is just like a painful boil that has to be lanced and tended to or it'l get infected. Not looking forward to the work ahead (carpets coming up, sheetrock and insulation being cut out, bleaching & drying of the insides of the walls...the list goes on and on).
Anyway, many thoughts headed the way of those in the areas affected by this system over the past few days. I'll be glad to see it pass on out of the area later today.
