I'm a little puzzled with the talk about "destroying every last one." Air power can accomplish a lot, but it has its limits. In fact, I don't think if we put 100K+ troops in there again that we could hope to destroy them to the last man...

The only way to destroy 'every last one' is to literally destroy that entire part of the planet - which isn't going to happen. This is a problem we'll be dealing with as long as people follow the 'religion of peace'.

As a side not, can't link to the article due to language, but apparently a comedian has challenged westboro baptist to fly to Iraq and picket ISIS, offering to fly a dozen of them first class - and they have accepted...

I was just about to post something similar, and I agree completely.

However, IMO the only way you truly win is overwhelming force and a very long term plan afterwards that stays until it is done even if that means decades. Totally riding the place of this is not something that we will do if we could. There is no way of knowing if this could have been avoided if we had not run out of patience and left, but we did and it did.

I've come to the realization that we need to go back, full force and when we're done cleaning house establish a permanent military base or two there like we did in Europe and that would calm the crazies down.

I hate to agree with you, but we really need that. I was over there 10 years ago. I wish we didn't need to go over there, but that region won't get stable unless we do.

The problem with that is there is really no support except with a small minority. I just don't think there enough Americans who want boots on the ground in Iraq again...
I wasn't talking about "boots on the ground". We've been there, done that, and it has resulted in little more than the unnecessary deaths and/or physical and psychological harm to thousands of our service men and women.
No, I'm not talking about that. Not only do we have the resources and capability of destroying and disabling enemy forces without having to put our own troops in harm's way, but we can do it without putting even a single US military person's life or health at risk.
Now I'm not saying we should "turn sand into glass". Just maybe something approaching that, but on a slightly smaller scale.

I'm not sure we could ever calm the crazies down because of the country east of Iraq.

That's just it. They do what they do because we put no fear into them. I mean we've got a Chinese fighter jet basically flipping us the aeronautical bird over international airspace today. Nobody in the world seems to fear us anymore. Not because we are incapable, but because they believe we are unwilling.

But we called up China and gave them a sternly worded complaint.

We have tested the limits of air power before and it always comes up short. If it didn't, I don't think the Taliban would still exist...

Well, that's the problem with these clowns - you start crushing them and they just shut their mouths and tend their goats until you leave.

They're tough guys when killing innocent people but run and hide like cockroaches when a real military comes looking for them.

We'll never get rid of them. The religion of peace has been creating these animals since muhammed made up the quran.

That's only because the only thing that's been truly tested is that at which politicians have felt comfortable. If the politicians would get out of the way and let the military do it's job, we wouldn't be in this situation in the first place.
Of course this has been the case for 50+ years, so it's not surprising that little tinhorn dictators in a tiny middle eastern country no bigger than some of our cities can throw a scare into a bunch of liberal politicians.

If they would let them do what they could do we could build a nice Six Flags and Super Lowes over there...

They think we're soft and to a degree they are probably right.
