****Bama vs. FAU - Postgame Thread****

Let's give a shout out to the OL...they played incredibly consistent even with subs in. I know there was a talent mismatch, but I have seen us struggle in the past against lesser teams.

And the Defense. Except for one 31 yard run FAU could not move the ball in any consistent fashion.

Sims continues to look sharp doing what he's asked to do. He's more crisp with the O.

However, when Coker was in the game, the play calling was different and there were lots more vertical shots. While Coker looked timid, you can see the promise and why the coaches want him to get ready.

I just really wished we might have seen Sims asked to thrown the ball down field more so as to get a better idea about his ability to do so.

Because most of Sims throws were short, it's kinda like comparing apples to oranges right now.

Can't really judge. I think they were trying to see what they have with Coker. He had a lot of deep routes. that stupid comparison between sims and Coker on throw to Stewart? with Coop crossing underneath was exactly the right read Andre. The receiver was open . Blake did what he does
. I think Blake had a little more zip today. He still watches the receiver in and out of the breaks which worries me. He has not had to look off safeties, so he doesn't. He may have to, which may be dangerous with better competition.

Coker looks like someone who hasn't played since mid-season last year. Sims looks like someone that been with Kiffin since he arrived, and also has worked his butt off. Additionally, I feel like we can win with either due to the differences in playcalling. Overall, I really don't remember getting the kind of yardage Alabama got today in any other cupcake game. Kiffin is certainly earning his money's worth.

the 31 yard run, Perry got trucked but it wasn't his fault, he shifted his weight at the last minute because the umpire was in the way. otherwise it would of been 7 yards and no first down

I think everything that Coker struggled with today can only be fixed with real, live game playing time. You saw him start to settle in a little more in the 3rd quarter. He's got to learn to manage the play clock and be "game aware" (last play of the half), but the huge potential is there!

Best play he had was a straight drop back. He stood tall when the pocket started to collapse. He surveyed the whole field, and eventually came back to Coop on about a 15 yard pass. He looked at 2 other receivers before he came back to Coop. Andre Ware gave him props on that one.

That's what he can do that Blake Sims hasn't shown he can do yet.

I think the opportunities are there for Sims to throw deep, but he's taking the routes that are open. For all the crap Ware was given, the point he made about Sims taking the underneath route was right. Coker seems to go for the HR with every throw, but that is not smart football when you have Copper running wide open.

QB competition
Blake Sims made the better reads when asked to progress; he got more easy throws. I think 8 of his first 10 throws didn't pass the LOS. His athleticism is really unlike anything I've seen out of an Alabama quarterback. Tyler Watts didn't have those tailback-like moves or speed. You'd probably have to go back further than my lifetime to find a comparison.

Coker was asked to go deep more than Sims and that probably affected his completion percentage. His arm looks exactly as advertised, but his ability to find the "most open man" is not there yet. He has above average athleticism for a more pro-style passer but I don't think he has the ability to breakdown SEC defenses with his legs like Sims. More of a Andrew Luck type athlete than a Robert Griffin type.

Overall Offense

- Cooper is poised to rake in some massive stats this season. Kiffin is going to get him touches any way possible. Definitely looks like he's going to cash in his NFL draft stock next April.

- We're are incredibly deep at receiver and tailback. TE hasn't been involved much in the offense. I figure that will change but Cooper has been such a safety valve for the young QB, I can get how they've been lost in the shuffle.

- Kiffin hasn't forced his hand much offensively in the first two games. The offense will have to diversify but I think they want to find the QB first.

Defense

- The run fits were poor at times. This needs to be solidified before conference play.

- Eddie Jackson looked 100% against inferior competition. We'll only know if he's truly 100% when we get into SEC play. Encouraging and a huge development for the secondary if he is good to go.

- Continue to be encouraged by the DL's pass rush. We may really eat up any of the very few traditional dropback passing offenses we play this year. They quick pass spread teams will continue to be hard to sack by design.

When conference games start, the QB's will have to be able to complete vertical pass plays and someone besides Coop will have to make some catches.

BS has GOT to stop staring down receivers.(cooper) SEC defenses will pick him apart.

Improvements were made overall. Pretty good effort against an inferior team.

We don't know if the punter improved or not.

Yes! This is what I was thinking. He needs to see the field better and take what the defense gives him. Seems like he wanted to show his ability a little too much.

And as hard as this is too believe..Tyren Jones may best our best & most complete RB..He sure looked smooth running the ball, he's quick & can shift on a dime, I hope he gets more touches as well..

rgw, appreciate the analysis but what do you mean by "run fit"?

the formations and play calls were different. period. this was by design by the coaching staff.

Blake is a great team player

@CecilHurt: Blake Sims on Jake Coker: "He's got strengths where my weakness is and I've got strengths where his weakness is. We're a team." #Alabama

I think it was the play calling more than his "decisions." I only remember him throwing one longer pass today. About 20 yard out to Christian Jones that was slightly high, but should have been caught.

OTOH, Coker threw several deep routs, including several deep shots in the middle of the field, which we haven't seen BS attempt just yet.

two games into the season and we still don't know what we have except one thing. Lane Kiffin is a much better coach than I anticipated.

Every alignment has an assignment for each player that puts them in a specific gap between the OL. We're having guys out of position occasionally...more than anytime other than the 2013 Auburn game really.

Coker had a lot of easy passes that he missed. Blake Sims completed most of his easy passes.

Coker was overthrowing bubble screens, throwing at guys' feet when they were a yard past the LOS..he had his share of easy throws. In addition, bubble screens were less effective with him in the game because of his slow delivery.
