Coach Saban upset with high expectations

I think this projection on to the fans has gone far enough. He claims not to talk to anyone outside family and football players and coaches during the season. How can he have any clear idea of what the fans think at this point in the season? The fans attitudes are the least of his problems (or should be). It's a little twist of meaning, but Stalling's remarks about listening to the fans apply here as well...

Do any of you not think CNS doesn't see the same thing? Do you really think he happy or satisfied with how we've played? He acknowledged the issues while most fans were basking in the glow of stomping UF. It's obvious to me that he is trying to resolve the issues, but non of the coaches can make the players make all the right decisions on the field. He obviously feels that this team has lost their confidence, and he thinks that positive reinforcement is the best chance of getting them to regain it. We went on the road last week and a lot of guys got physically beat up. I've seen teams get beat before and it affects you in the next game. There's the old coaching adage - "Don't let them beat you twice." - and I've seen it happen to teams after we beat them. We've seen whole programs seemingly fold up after some of our wins over them.

If CNS thinks that going to bat and tempering the expectations with this team will help them regain confidence, I can handle it. Would you rather see CNS panicking like many fans are? The chances are is that CNS really isn't talking to and about people that are pointing out the obvious problems and saying what we need to improve on. Everybody knows that. He's probably talking to and about the idiots out there that are tweeting at kids about the performance, bashing Blake, Christion, Kiffin, etc, etc. Look around other boards, facebook, twitter, and even some posts here and you'll see a whole lotta stupid. There's people out there that have screamed how "disgraceful" and "embarrassing" to lose to OM and almost get beat by Arky, and that is exactly what he means by a lot of fans not respecting our opponents. I agree with him on that. There's some truly embarrassing things that have been said, and if CNS is calling them out, I have no problem with it.

It is humorous to me that so many of you feel that it is totally fine to criticize CNS as much as you want, but if he says anything at all about the fans, it is "embarrassing the University", "He needs to shut up and coach", and "I'm tired of hearing whining from the gazillionaire and his wife". That's ironically ironic to me.

That's a great post. I'm in the creative position of owning an ad agency, and I never would have thought of that angle--"Fans can expect everything from the coach, but coach can't expect anything from the fans".
That's just darn good, and i agree, 100%.

This overall "Saban is right; he does no wrong and can't take any blame for anything" mindset is the beginning to how Penn State fans felt about Joe Pa.

Your first comparison was ridiculous...To continue is irresponsible and downright sickening. You are aware of what Joe Paterno did, or better yet didn't do..Right?

I sarcastically tweeted the same thing after he made the comments. Who did he talk to since he goes to the complex at 6:30 and doesn't get home until 10?

To the Sabanites, I'm glad CNS sees the problems. I just don't want him attacking fans for no reason like he did today. He can find a better way to tell us to lower our expectations... Even though he set them on January 4, 2007.

I'm going to guess you don't get the comparison here.

Penn State fans acted as though Joe Pa could do no wrong and he would never have done what was alleged to have happened.

Some fans on here act as though Nick Saban can do no wrong and should not take any blame for anything wrong with the team. All blame should go solely to the players. And if Nick Saban feels the need to berate the fans in front of the media, he has the right because he has a few championships and knows how to win titles.

No one is, or should be, beyond reproach.

Even the fans? I'm so sure everybody feels that way.

The bottom line is this: CNS has won more games in the last 6 years than anyone in history, but he is not perfect. He, like, anyone has made mistakes and will continue to do so. He is not beyond reproach, nor should he be. We are struggling right now, but based on his success, I'm willing to give him a chance to correct the problems. It's as simple as that.

Comparing THAT to what Paterno did is utterly ridiculous.

^^^That's some of the stupid I'm talking about right there.^^^

You're really comparing Paterno covering for a rapist to people giving CNS a chance to correct the mistakes on football team?

I can't believe that someone would read that and come away with your response. His point was that no one dared to challenge or question JoePa on anything. Thus what happened at Penn St happened..

I agree! Who's HE talking to???

If he's trying to send a message to the team by fussing at fans (or media) as some have said in the past, I think he went a little too far today.

Saban berating and complaining about the fans would be like the CEO of Walmart (not literally because I know you take some things that way) complaining about their customers. Shouldn't the CEO of a company have better things to do, especially if all of your competitors have caught up with or passed you?

Before ya'll run Coach Saban off, I sure hope you have a contingency plan in place.....otherwise, a return to the pit toilet is in the cards....

I get the "comparison" and you totally went overboard and should apologize for your insensitive remarks. That's up to you.

Seriously?

Well, here's the difference. Nobody pays me to be a Bama fan. CNS makes $500,000 A GAME TO COACH FOOTBALL.

Seriously?

It was an analogy. I don't think any teams have passed Bama as a program yet. It's also kind of ambiguous to define another program "passing us." If you are just talking about this year it looks like a few have, though that could definitely change. Overall though, no, we haven't been passed yet..

The negativity this season really needs to change. It's not going to accomplish anything.

Unfortunately, a lot of this is driven by the media and social media. Yes, there are a lot of crazies who just don't get it. Give them a mouthpiece like the Finebaum show and it's like a timebomb. And it gets a whole lot of people going. In the wrong direction.

What does his pay have to do with anything? He's paid to get results, and if he believes asking certain things get results, that's him doing his job. I do not understand the twisted logic that says we pay you to produce results, but don't you dare include us in those results *unless it's praise in which case we'll gladly accept it.

Every time he's credited the fans, I barely hear anything about it. Heck, even the fans don't seem to get happy, it's kind of like oh yeah sure what ever. He says they were a big reason he got the #1 recruiting class, or really supportive during a big game and it's a collective yawn, he is specifically mentioning the fans! He's singling them out! He says something negative? It's horrible! Bear Bryant didn't do that to us, why I never...

Besides that, he was offered more money to go elsewhere. He didn't, so to turn this into a talk about money is kind of off considering he took less money to stay at Alabama, you know like he took a pay cut to come to Alabama.

I wonder if this is what it was like to be a head coach for Jerry Jones.
