We're still in the running for a NCAA tourney bid IF we can go on a run to finish out the season and finish in the top 4-5 of the SEC. If we are in the market for a new coach then RIGHT NOW I would be in favor of Howland. I'm not in favor of the up-and-coming coaches because while some are the real deal, many are not. I'd prefer a veteran, proven coach which is why I like Howland AT THIS MOMENT (could change at the end of the season depending on who is available). There is another name that I won't mention because it would get me banned from this board but he is a former SEC coach that was fairly successful. No, not Gottfried or Wimp or Sonny. Trust me, you don't want Gentle Ben after what went down in Westwood on his watch. Down, down, down it went, too - taking the program with it.
His eventual future is NBA coach. But, he may want to prove himself outside of Ames before he makes that jump. It would cost us the moon, but I believe he would consider an interim move before going to the NBA.
Funny thing is... has anyone checked Alabama recuiting class for basketball? They're ranked no.6th
Haha Some of you are still positive. But when has a Bama team under Grant really made a good run except one year. If we win every game here out yes we may have a chance but still would be lucky to get in and doesn't that show how bad we are under Grant.
As far as recruiting we have had some good classes but kids leave Grant and do not develop and seem to regress under him.
I don't think he would leave his alma mater either. However, Lon Kruger left his alma mater at Kansas St. to go to Florida.

can recruit, and is a pretty good coach, but I don't think the AD would want to go in that direction. Especially since the NCAA used Tyrone Beaman as one of the reasons to extend probation on football.Actually my post was more pessimistic than optimistic. I just think that Battle will find every excuse possible to keep from firing Grant and if we somehow manage to finish in the top 5 of the SEC then we would might get an NCAA tourney invite by default. I'm not predicting that to happen just pointing out the possibility. The SEC (minus UK) is a mess but the chatter is that 4-5 teams could get an invite this year.

I've grown tired of the media types' continual defense of CAG. Their major point is "If you get rid of CAG, then who are your going to get? Alabama isn't a "destination" job." What a lame argument.
In the real world for the most part, we rise and fall on our own merits. If you are not getting the job done, then it is time for you to go. It doesn't matter who is or isn't on the "short list" of candidates. Do you allow CAG to stay and the program to stagnate because you can't get a "dream" candidate? If you're running a business, have employees that are under performing and you given them plenty of time to "figure it out", do you keep them based on who you may or may not be able to get to replace them? I don't think so.
I'll be honest. CAG lost me last year. Since 2005-2006 season I had average attending 6-8 games a year. This year, I can't force myself to drive to Tuscaloosa. I know I'll see the same thing I've seen for much of the last five years.

I asked this question on the game thread - really for Earl or anyone with any insight: Does the Board of Trustees/and or Bill Battle care enough about basketball to spend the 4 million I believe it would take to pay Grant off and let this program try to move forward? I came to the conclusion after the first half against Florida that Grant was done- and it simply was not going to be better under his guidance. Nothing since then has changed my mind. The time is now. Have been a fan for 40 years and have stopped watching the last couple of games. Simply unwatchable.
I know this board isn't about being right or wrong-it's just about discussion. But I have to say that I have been a proponent of change for the past several years. We've had the same problems, strategically and personnel wise, since CAG took over. I'm sorry but their is no excuse to not make any progress philosophically or personnel wise in 6 years. If CAG only wants to recruit "athlete" type players who can't really shoot but are pretty good at slashing and getting in the lane, then stop running an offense where we have to depend on making 50%+ 3 point percentage to win and/or be in the game. I am, and have been, ready for a change. /rant

I don't know the exact language in CAG's contract but it probably contains offset language. Meaning that Alabama probably wouldn't owe CAG his entire buyout if he were to get a coaching job somewhere else. Another route is the buyout can be negotiated. If the administration wants CAG gone and CAG feels like it's time for a change also, they can reduce the buyout so both parties can go their separate ways. I think the only way Bama would have to pay the entire buyout is if CAG gets fired and doesn't coach anywhere the next few years..
This goes back to the point a few of us have made - the team isn't playing the style of basketball CAG promised. We aren't running that "94 feet of basketball" style he coached at VCU and ran for the first two to three seasons on campus.
I remember using depth as an excuse for the team not running that style during the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 seasons. There's plenty of depth on the team now though.
