Duke gets screwed over by the referees on the final play of the game

I thought we had it bad in the SEC, but this takes the cake for referee ineptness. During a crazy play when the u is trying to lateral and find a way to get it to the endzone the refs missed numerous blocks in the back and a player being down by contact.I don't know if it's possible under the rules, but in a just world, the ACC should reverse this and award the win to Duke. They spent 9 minutes reviewing this and still didn't get it right.

its because ALL referees suck and they are not held accountable for their ineptness

Now that the suspensions are (rightly) coming out, what to do with the game? If Duke obviously won, do you make it right? I mean, they already waived off a flag on review (something that's unheard of for the penalty that was called).

In the twisted world of college football officiating, up is down, left is right and right is wrong. How do you just allow it to cost Duke? At least with Colorado's 5th down they had to try and score. In our games where illegal plays resulted in a touchdown, we at least had a chance to come back (did so against Tenn, fell short against Ole Miss).

Duke is literally powerless to do anything but sit and take it.

I do not bet on football games but wonder how the outcome affected the payouts. What was the line one the game? I would bet there were a lot of angry folks over the ridiculous way the refs handled it.

I understand what you are saying. Duke shouldn't have left enough room on the scoreboard for a play like this to be significant. But to blame this on Duke is absurd. They would have stopped it were it not for several illegal blocks from Miami. They actually did stop it at one point and the refs failed to call the Miami player down.

You can't blame the players when the refs don't enforce the rules of the game.

If duke was worth a darn they would've knocked them out of the game and never let it come that play.

This is a terrible situation for Duke. Not only do they get hosed out of a win, it potentially impacts their ability to make the ACC title game and could impact the bowl tier they fall into (meaning smaller payout).

I get that officials making bad calls is part of the game. But very rarely are the errors this egregious with such huge implications. I think if there were ever a chance for a reversal, this would be it.

Even if the result isn't changed, there needs to be more than a 2 game suspension for this crew. If you are this bad at your job, you need to be cut loose. Show that there is zero tolerance for lazy and inept officiating. That might even encourage other crews to be a little bit sharper when they call games.

The refs essentially became spectators.
Agree. After plays like that, the refs should contain the crowd with an immediate whistle for review and maybe gets the coaches attention to calm the players. Then take all the time it needs to review, I wish could be the entire play if it exceeds a certain number of fumbles/laterals/passes. You nailed it, it becomes a free for all. And just kick the ball down the field and tackle someone!

That is just a ridiculous statement. Duke battled back from 12 points down to win the game only to then have it stolen by the officiating crew (which the ACC has admitted to). If you still think this is Duke's fault, then you are hopeless.

You may not be familiar with the concept, but good teams often come from behind to win. Not every victory is a blow out.

The replay official erred in not overturning the ruling on the field that the Miami player had released the ball prior to his knee being down. If called, this would have ended the game.

End of conversation. Duke should be awarded the win immediately if not sooner.

I get your point - you need to dominate your opponents so the officials or a lucky play can't steal a game from you - but teams are not going to play their best every week. When you don't play your best, it is still reasonable to expect that the officials will do their jobs.

I don't gamble either but the over/under for the game 51.5. The score was 27-24 Duke prior to the kickoff return (51) so if you were on the under side of this game, it has to qualify as one of the worst "bad beats" in a long while.

Well obviously you aren't familiar to the concept " good teams find ways to win against adversity". To be honest I don't know why you are so passionate about duke. They are a traditional bottom feeder. I guess it's cause it's Miami winning that gets you.

True, but I stand by my point that duke allowed themselves to be put in a situation that the refs and craziness could decide the game for better or worse.

Fair enough - you felt the same way when the officials robbed Alabama against LSU in 2011 (bogus INT call) and against Ole Miss this year (pop pass)?

This is one of the most absurd lines of thinking when it comes to sports.

When the ACC openly admits the officials were in the wrong, how can you say Duke shouldn't have allowed the officials to decide the game?

The ACC's admittance shows Duke had the game won and didn't allow the officials to decide the game, but the officials made their own decision on the game rather than do their jobs.

NASCAR had a situation where one driver caused a caution (NASCAR ruled) so that his team mate would finish high enough to qualify for The Chase. Instead of going back and changing everything they simply added a spot to The Chase.

Now if this winds up knocking Duke out of the ACC CG, then ACC needs to add a win to Duke's record so they can go anyway.
