Met Michael Gross (dad on Family Ties) years ago in Palm Desert, CA. Very nice. Met Robert Townsend in the Bham airport when he was flying in for a benefit for Miles College (I think). He was great and took the time to shake all our hands and let us get a picture with him. Hung out for about 30 minutes one night with Tom Petty and 20 or so other people. He seemed nice, but was kind of out of it. Not hammered or anything, just very quiet and maybe a little distracted. "Met" Phil Donahue VERY briefly before one if his shows when he was chatting with the audience. He asked where everybody where they were from and when I told him Alabama, he immediately asked about Bama football. He seemed like he really enjoyed interacting with the audience and was having a great time.

Met Tim McCarver several times in Memphis and he never failed to be a complete jackass. A group of us ran into Michael Jordan one night at a bar when he was with the Barons. He ignored the guys and hit on the girls. He pretty much asked one of the girls with us if she wanted to leave with him. She said, “Aren’t you married?” Several of us laughed and things kind of went downhill from there.

Bob Hope in the bathroom of an airport Delta Crown room. I said Hello Mr. Hope, I just wanted to say Hi. Was looking at me in the mirror as he washed his hands, and he said, Well Hi. Never bothered to turn around. I was good with that.

Jim Nabors at a Stars Fell on Alabama charity concert about 46 years ago. He was very nice. I was the jerk (thought I was too cool).

Bum Phillips at a golf tournament. Nice guy. Telling stories constantly.

Roger Maris at a golf tournament. Ok guy, just a little bit aloof. Made it clear he didn't want to engage in conversation.

Gov. George Wallace - Came through our baseball dugout shaking hands. Real nice fellow.

Muhammad Ali in the late '90s. Already maybe 50% debilitated by Parkinson's Syndrome. He tried to smile. A pitiful sight, really.

Tommy Tuberville at his charity golf tournament. Asshat

Curt Jarvis (G) in an airport. Super, super nice guy. He was a grad assistant at Bama at the time. Told me the pending issues (just been put out there) with Gene Jelks were nothing to worry about .

Once I was on a flight with Ray Charles. I waved at him, but he ignored me.

Called in a pickup BBQ brisket order at a joint in Briarcliff Texas, on the lake outside Austin, go bustin' in wanting to pay and go but there sat Willie Nelson drinkin' his beer and talking to a another guy and girl. I looked at him to see if it was him, he said "well hello partner", I said glad to meet you Willie, had both hands full, no pen, nothing to sign, had to go but real genuine to me that night.

Well.....how was he?
I consider him a jerk. He was supposed to meet me at IHOP before the 2014 Florida game and stood me up.

I'm just kidding (he did text and inform me plans had changed but he had others in his entourage he had to be concerned with).

I'm still disappointed, though :()

Cherry and Bart Starr: super, super nice couple. We lived in the same neighborhood for a time and would see them in the local Bruno's from time to time. They would always recognize me and my wife and would go out of their way to greet us. Really just a super nice couple all the way around. I consider myself quite privileged to have known them just a little bit.

Jay Barker: he was a volunteer assistant coach on my son's YMCA basketball team. Very encouraging with the kids.

I went to a UAB baseball dinner once to hear Phil Niekro speak. Before he talked, he had an autograph line. When it was my turn, I had him sign a ball and said he was my favorite player as a kid. He kind of ignored me, didn't even say thanks. Kind of a jerk, I thought. I did like his speech.

My son played ball with a former Bama player's son for several years. Not going to say his name, but it is one most would know. Real nice guy with great kids.

Not in the same league as a pro baseball player but I am the best worker at my job and get tired of compliments and start ignoring them because I get so many. It might be even worse for a baseball player.

I met John Denver back in the mid 80's at a NASA picnic in Huntsville. I was a teenager at the time and probably spent 30 minutes with him. As a budding musician and NASA brat, he was very cool. He spent a lot of time talking with anyone who bothered to talk with him. A complete class act.

A few years later I met Rick Nielsen and Tom Petersson from Cheap Trick and they were both very laid back and cool.

That's the extent of my interactions with celebrities.

I was flying home to Bham from Dallas back in 1996 or so; I was sitting at the age in the DFW airport when Herschel Walker walks up and sits down across from me. As it turns out, he was on his way to Bham for an appt w/ Dr. Andrews at HealthSouth. He chatted with me and the other passengers, talked about the new coach the Cowboys had just hired. Simply could not have nicer or more down to earth.

Back in 1988 or so I played basketball with Wynton Marsalis when he was playing a concert in Morgan Auditorium in T-town. i was working tech crew, and he and his band liked to shoot hoops after sound checks. Nice guy, gave me tips on defending the baseline. The funny part is that the High Tide administrator was on pins and needles the entire time, afraid that Marsalis would catch an elbow in the mouth.

I have led a boring life.

I have a friend who told me he met Damon Wayans at the Atlanta airport. He got a picture of him and told him what a huge fan he was. He then showed me the picture. It was Jamie Fox.
