Rating Jalen Hurts Half Way Thru the Regular Season

the point was that he's simply playing on a bigger stage

I knew what you were saying Sip. :wink:I was just adding the ratio of Texas HS attendance to major college is a little less of a big step than in other states. Many of these kids play in front of 10-15K on a regular basis.

I won't bother rating him. Too subjective.

JH has been great - I'll say that. I'm happy with every facet of his game, but I understand he's got room to grow. He's a TF so that's okay.

A few things I REALLY like are:

1. His ability to pick up first downs with his feet when receivers are covered.
2. Throws the ball away and doesn't take sacks.
3. Makes our red zone efficiency so much better with his mobility.
4. Poise.

I might not know what I am talking about but the only flaw I see with his game is timing and anticipation. I don't think he is inaccurate as much as he is waiting for the receiver to get "open" before he throws thus throwing off the timing and creating all the situations where the receiver has to wait on the ball. I think playing time and reps will cure this. Once he gets it down there is no ceiling IMO.

I do realize Allen has been in the program and yes that matters, but he's still a first time starter.

I realize he is a true freshman, and yes I was wholly impressed with his response to getting decked in the Ole Miss game, but Tennessee is not going to use their special "softie" defense for use on pure freshman, they are going to try to kill him. I wasn't rating him "for a freshman" I was rating him as the starting quarterback.

So far this season our defense has carried us (as I expected). We may need more from Hurts this week than he has had to provide to this point. If he can lead them to victory in THAT stadium with 100 thousand genetically challenged people yelling at him, I will come back and adjust my COOLNESS/POISE rating.

That's just me and my opinion, but I feel like he already proved that with Ole Miss and Arkansas game. he has showed that he can remain calm, no matter what comes at him. All those hits he had in Ole miss game, and the ability to come back from that. He did lead Alabama from behind to victory in the game against Ole Miss. In Arkansas game, he responded well after all those dirty hits on him. He proved that he can win on the road. He just need to improve on deep ball, and leadership skills ( Which is getting better each week) He will be fine.

I think you are exactly right. Game is obviously faster at this level and throwing windows are typically smaller. This time last year he was throwing to slower guys (comparatively) and probably had more wide open looks and a few less big uglies in his face as he was doing so.

AJ was a 3rd year Soph. Also, he did not have the dramatic effect on the running game that Jalen does. That's not counting the intangibles, some of which AJ had. His response after the OM scoop and score was the most impressive sequence of plays I've seen this year. Led them to a TD so fast that it left time for Eddie's punt return. IMO, he was going to lead Bama to a win with or without the PR. Impressive impressive.

He may not play well at some point, but he has proven without a doubt that he can win against name opponents (USC) on neutral fields and in hostile stadiums (OM, Ark). Coming from behind or from ahead. IMO the entire team (O, D, ST) benefits tremendously from his calm, poised, competitive presence. He's amazing.

True - AJ had 3 years prior to starting to work on timing with a lot of those receivers, which is why he was better with the long ball earlier - at least relative to what we have seen with JH. AJ also had a completely dominant running game and OL so didn't have quite the pressure as what JH has had to handle.

Gary Danielson made a observation about Jalen saying that basic, this isn't high school anymore the receivers will outrun you. I think that was spot on about Jalen. He has to work on that touch but that's with any qb coming out of high school.

I caught that one too. Danielson knows his stuff, especially about QB's.

That and he'll learn to put more air under his long balls. I'm confident he'll catch on. He's the most exciting QB we've had come along in a long time...

Yes, and I think he added that at this level (and more so in the NFL) you have to throw the ball before someone is open.

That takes reps that a true freshman hasn't gotten just yet.

Precisely! I guess that's why we see him get better each week. He's getting use to the game speed. It makes the Ole Miss game seem better and better to me because I believe if we had to play them again it would be ugly. Speaking of which, Jonah Williams needs to be spoken highly of as well. He's gotten better and better too.

We had how many plays of 50 yards or more against Arkansas and Ole Miss? Yes the defense pitched in with touchdowns in both games. But Hurts, Jacobs, Ridley, Harris, Stewart et al also have blown the walls off defenses.

But what do I think of Hurts as our QB for the next few years? Heck yeah, brother.

He's very much a freshman QB in some ways but in others we may have never had a cooler customer at QB.

He may disagree:

With that said, I love JH!

I'll Play:

1. COOLNESS/POISE: 10 - He is completely unflappable. Fumbles his 1st snap. No problem. Has a fumble lost for a TD to go down BIG to Ole Miss. Didn't even blink. Has CNS CHEW his posterior OUT. Goes 10 for his next 12 passing for 170+ yards and 2 TD's. He is Tom Brady/Joe Montana levels of ice watery veins.

2. LEADERSHIP: 9 - He has the total respect of his teammates. They play harder for him and gravitate to him on the sidelines. He is in Total command of the team on the field. The next step to reach a 10 here is to maybe scold a player for not doing his job.....or even consoling a teammate for a mistake that was their fault but Jalen doesn't want them discouraged.

3. RUNNING THREAT: 6 - This has been one of my more disappointing areas because he has been bolstered up at this dual threat nightmare. But he runs really tentative it seems and many times barely makes it back to the LOS or only picks up 1-3 yards. I'm still waiting for that WOW run. But some of this may also be his deceptive running style. He does indeed glide like a Vince Young or Matt Jones.

4. PASSING: 7 - I'm still waiting for this part to click too. He seems to make some of his better throws rolling out and extending plays or even when he just rares back and throws a rope. But his touch and accuracy needs work on all routes but especially the deep ball. He either underthrows badly or is just way off where you aren't quite sure who he was throwing too. But to his credit he throws it where the other team can't get it either and is smart enough to throw the ball into the stands and live another play. He will get there but he needs work. He does have good chemistry with Stewart though so we need to keep him healthy.

5. INTANGIBLES/BALL PROTECTION: 10 - He definitely has the IT factor no doubt about it. He possesses everything that can't be taught. His ball protection has been great too. I would say only his 1st INT was a bad decision. The 2nd one he was hit as he threw it and the 1st fumble was hard to tell if it was his fault or not and the 2nd fumble shouldn't even have counted because it was targeting. So imho that's only one turnover solely on him in 6 games as a TF.....that gets a 10 from me.

He's the Future and our 3 year starter at least. I think he has all the potential in the world to lead us to 1-2 more NC's and he might get himself a Heisman along the way. I'm loving everything I've seen from Jalen as a complete package that will only get better. It's just mindblowing that he's a TF. He plays with the maturity of a 5th year SR.

Ole Miss begs to differ.

Well Lol....that's true that was his most impressive stats game running. But his potential as said by others seemed to indicate he was Manziel level dangerous as a runner. A guy who could go 75-100+ yards on the ground any given game and multiple times.
