Re: Replacement Offensive Coordinator

Patrick Lenicioni (The Five Dysfunctions of a Team) says that behaviors are almost always a precursor to results. I suppose these behaviors are the exceptions that prove the rule...
All that does is make me marvel even more at Coach Saban's abilities as ringmaster...

Re: Replacement Offensive Coordinator

The clear implication from knowledgeable posters is that Sarkisian is still haunted by the bottle.

I don't know if he is or isn't. But if he is, it's far more important, for a whole lot of reasons, for him to get off the sauce than it is for us to have him as OC.

Tuscaloosa is a tough, tough place to be out of college, unmarried, with a drinking problem. He may need a change of scenery. If he needs a change, the team probably does, too. Hard to credibly enforce discipline on the players if the staff isn't held to the same standard.

Re: Replacement Offensive Coordinator

I'll preface by saying I have no idea who would be the 'perfect' replacement. But I think I'd start by looking at the teams in Top 30 or so in Offensive yards and ppg. Then out of those 30... isolate the teams that run an offense similar to what we will be doing with Jalen the next 3 years (I think he'll be a 4-year starter barring a huge improvement in passing). The 'Fastball' RPO style and make a list of those OC's and go from there.

Here's your start...average rank is their placement of the two ranks.

Avg RK TEAM YDS, PTS per game
1.5 Louisville 559, 45.3
3 Oklahoma 557, 44.7
4 Texas Tech 567, 43.7
4.5 Western Kentucky 517, 45.1
6.5 Louisiana Tech 516, 44
8.5 South Florida 515, 43.6
Tulsa 522, 41.4
11.5 Toledo 530, 38.8
12 Western Michigan 496, 43.5
12.5 Middle Tennessee 516, 40.1
13 Washington 477, 44.5
14 Clemson 506, 40.2
14.5 Washington State 498, 40.3
15 Ohio State 480, 42.7
17 California 513, 37.1
18.5 Oklahoma State 492, 38.7
19.5 Alabama 471, 40.5
24 Oregon 492, 35.4
Boise State 480, 35.6
24.5 New Mexico 470, 37.8
29 Texas A&M 468, 35.4

Re: Replacement Offensive Coordinator

So with the news of Kiffin to FAU does it become clearer who becomes the next coordinator now? Would we announce before or after playoffs?

Re: Replacement Offensive Coordinator

Bleacher Report Team Stream just came across my phone and said Saban to consider in house candidates, Steve Sarkisian, Billy Napier and Mike Locksley for OC.

FWIW.

LSU looking at Pitt's OC, Matt Canada.

Re: Replacement Offensive Coordinator

That's an impressive list for in house! Love Napier as the wide receivers coach but would love to see him get a chance.

Re: Replacement Offensive Coordinator

Came here to say this thread was going to blow up. To contribute I'd say Napier stands a strong chance. Will listen to more knowledgable voices on the topic.

I hope we get the best man for the job. I like what Kiffin did and I hope we get someone with the same mindset but can reign things in a bit quicker than Lane.

Re: Replacement Offensive Coordinator

We're probably going to hire from the outside instead of the inside. That is basically been the Saban way with the OC position.

Always examine that source carefully. I personally think Sark is ruled out. The other two, I pointed out in the Kiffin thread. I think it will be one of those two or a wild card from outside...

IF Napier gets the nod, will we junk the RO/pop pass O for a more conservative pro set like we used to run, and if not how well versed is Napier in the what we are running right now?

Re: Replacement Offensive Coordinator

I think it's safe to assume with Hurts as our starter and Tua coming in we will run an offense that utilitizes their talents.

Re: Replacement Offensive Coordinator

I seriously doubt Napier is promoted to OC. As it was said before, I think we'll hire outside like we have since Saban's been at Bama. No way we lose the benefits of having Jalen as starting QB by going back to the past.
